Hardback genre fiction integrated with regular fiction collection and labeled accordingly (R for romance, M for mystery, etc.) to facilitate browsing. Fiction books numbered by volume for all books in series to facilitate finding books in chronological order. Biographies integrated with regular nonfiction collection (e.g., biographies of golfers are shelfed with the golfing books and labeled with a B to facilitate browsing). Curated adult DVD collection containing the American Film Institutes Top 100 films and the Internet Movie Database (IMDb) collection of top 250 international films. Childrens DVD collection contains the Reading Rainbow series as well as the Bill Nye: Science Guy series among hundreds of other juvenile titles. Over 1,000 adult books on CD; hundreds of award-winning childrens books on CD. String figure programs held every summer as part of the Texas Reading Club. Hale County Bibliography along with a supplement, compiled by the librarian, staff, and friends is available at the Information Desk for $50 (hardbound) and $30 (spiral bound). Extensive Hale County historical holdings. Library designated a Texas Heritage Resource Centerin 1984. Excellent genealogy collection + access online (for Unger Library patrons) of HeritageQuest. The Hi-Plains Genealogical Society meets once a month in the meeting room. Twice-a-year (Memorial Day and Thanksgiving) community blood drives sponsored by United Blood Services in Lubbock. Annual Friends of the Library book sale held on the last weekend of March. Patron barcodes can be scanned from their smart phones using a free app. 15 public-access Internet computers (first in the area) have high speed (150 Mbs) and feature Microsoft Office programs. A scanner is also shared among the computers. Computer users have access to black and white, color, and 11x17 networked laser printers. First library in the area to offer wireless Internet and, too, black and white networked laser printing. The Unger Library does not charge for printing résumés or other job-related activities such as applications. Library publishes a monthly newsletter, Unger Ululations, to let the public know about current activities. The public library in Plainview is over 100 years old while the Unger Memorial Library has been in existence since 1960. All library staff are Notary Publics. Mermaid sculpture made out of plaster and broken glass by Wayland art professor Candace Keller. Juvenile literacy center with four computers with touch screens for kidsuse. READ posters abound! From the American Library Association and the Texas Library Association. Also, a poster display of the Texas Library Associations summer themes. Posters showing covers of the winners and runners-up for the current year for childrens and young adult book awards. (Mostly) complete Plainview High School yearbook collection. Also, all of the yearbooks up to 2013 are available online: http://unger.myplainview.com/yearbook.html Historical Hale County map in reference section (6’ x 8’) which shows all of the cities which have ever existed in Hale County, most of which are ghost towns now. Special collections: Oxford University Presss Very Short Introduction series of over 400 titles; complete Library of America set of over 200 volumes. Annual Creative Quilters quilt display held every May. Approximately 20 quilts hang off our balcony for the entire month of May. The Ready-to-Serve Volunteer (RSVP) program is housed in the basement of the Unger Library. Unger Librarian serves as the county librarian for all of Hale County (upon certification).
