PTA Afterschool Programs at Spring Glen
Fall 2019
The flyers in this packet contain information about each afterschool program available to your child’s grade, including instructions to sign up. Programs will begin the week of September 16th and generally run for 8-12 weeks. Most programs end between 4:30 and 4:45 PM. The program will notify you which door dismissal takes place at; please arrive promptly at that location (not the front office). Any children enrolled in Right at School aftercare can be dismissed directly to that program.
The PTA wants all children to be able to participate in afterschool programs regardless of their ability to pay. Scholarships are need-based and available for any child who would otherwise not be able to join an afterschool program. This includes but is not limited to families who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Simply pay 10% of the total cost of the program and the PTA will pay the remainder. If there are any other barriers to your child participating besides cost, please contact us! We will incorporate your feedback into future sessions.

After-School ChessSpring Glen SchoolFall Session 2019
Description:The after-school chess club at Spring Glen provides a fun opportunity to learn the game of chess and improve chess skills. We have a positive, relaxed environment where students of all ages and skill levels are welcome. Playing chess helps students learn skills in decision making, planning and strategic thinking. As they learn from mistakes and improve their chess abilities they develop resilience and learn good sportsmanship. Chess has also been shown to improve critical thinking skills, math competency, concentration, and spatial reasoning. Each class includes lessons on chess tactics and strategies, puzzles and examples that illustrate the day’s topics, and time for chess games with classmates.
Instructor/Additional Info:Rod Groff teaches chess in Hamden and surrounding areas and is a certified chess coach and club tournament director with the US Chess Federation. He is also a parent of three children in Hamden Public Schools. Additional information and resources for chess players can be found at the web site https://PlayMoreChess.com. Students enrolled in after-school chess receive a free membership in Hamden Chess Club while enrolled in the after-school program. HCC membership includes discounted fees for tournaments and regular hours for casual chess games at our Play More Chess – Chess Academy location in Hamden.

Each class period starts at the end of the school day and ends at 4:35 PM. Parents will meet the instructor at the school entrance and sign out their child. In case of cancellation due to weather, there is a makeup day reserved prior to the end of the session. After-School Lego Quest Spring Glen School Fall Session 2019
Description: Lego Quest is a non-competitive, creative building challenge in which students investigate an idea, build something and share it. Lego Quest was started by a teacher (http://legoquestkids.blogspot.com) and students from all over the world have participated. Children of any age are welcome to participate. Instructor: Kristen Senise is a SRBI Coordinator at Spring Glen School. She has worked with students across grade levels and inspired multiple science initiatives at Spring Glen including the Invention Convention and STARLAB.
The deadline for returning this form is September 10 Each quest starts at the end of the school day and ends at 4:35. Parents will meet the instructor at the school entrance and sign their child out. It is imperative that you show up on time to pick up your child. Children enrolled in the Y will be dismissed to that program. Spring Glen Great Books Program Monthly Afterschool Book Club
For 3rd and 4th Graders Fall 2019
The Spring Glen Great Books Program is a monthly gathering during which students will discuss some of the best works of literature ever written for young people. Each month, club members will collectively select from a list of classic children’s novels including such books as A Wrinkle in Time, The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe, and Matilda and read the selection (or have it read to them) prior to the next club meeting.
Meetings will be held after school one Tuesday a month on October 1st, November 12th and December 17th and will run until 4:30pm. A fee of $40 will cover all of the books and other materials used during the session. Financial assistance is available.

Creative Kids Fall 2019 Grades 3-6 with Mrs Ferguson This is an after school class for older students who love to use their imaginations, their artistic skills and be creative. Experience the zapping effect of a Van Der Graaf generator and electrifying lightening! Visualize optical illusions and Technicolor in a way that you never perceived before! Even, hear and see your voice change right in front of your very own eyes! But that’s not all; things get heated up when you witness an underwater volcano, create thermal slime, and discover other super power sources of the world!
SPRING GLEN MATH CIRCLE FALL 2019 The Spring Glen Math Circle is a chance for young children to explore math in a supportive, social environment. Each week we introduce one or two fields of math (graph theory, topology, and more) in a way that elementary students (and parents) can explore. We color maps, build computers out of dominos, start restaurants, board airplanes, and eat pizza. Most importantly, we have fun. In the process, we give children a new understanding of all things we can do with math, and the confidence to know that they can do it.

instruction/teaching from Coach Ott during game play to develop kids’ physically and mentally. ● Space is limited to ensure appropriate individual instruction and feedback for each participant. ● Important : This is for kids who have already played organized basketball with a coached team/league.
Kids must already possess age-appropriate basic fundamental skills and understand the rules of the game. (The fall semester program is not for beginners that are new to organized basketball.)

Kidding Around Yoga with Sherri Spring Glen School- (Wednesdays &/or Fridays)

Description: Kidding Around Yoga incorporates all the traditional aspects of yoga: Asanas, Meditation, Pranayama, Deep Relaxation, and, of course, a LOT of kidding around. It combines fun & exciting activities and games with its own Music that is simply magical! Faces light up, bodies are moving and grooving, children are singing, jumping, and striking poses! Instructor: Sherri Sosensky is a certified and licensed Children’s Yoga Instructor with the KAY Program.
