This programme will be offered to students who have achieved very high GCSE grades (majority As and A*s). They will be competing for places to study at one of the top universities around the country; including Oxbridge (Oxford and Cambridge) and Russell Group Universities for courses such as Medicine, Dentistry and Law. For such courses and universities, students will be required to show that they can be stretched and challenged and achieve outside of their academic field. They will need to demonstrate some of the much sought after skills such as in-depth research ability, independent and creative thinking and presentation and interview skills.

We offer the Extended Project Qualification (equivalent to an A Level qualification) in which students choose an area that they would like to research. They work alongside a supervisor to develop a plan for their research, write up their project and then present their findings to an audience. Increasingly students are being expected to have this qualification alongside their A levels for the top universities. This qualification shows students are passionate about their subject or an area assimilated to their subject, and can work independently.

EXTENDED PROJECT

Students wishing to apply for Medicine are given the opportunity to complete work experience at a hospital in the summer term of Year 12, and participate in medical workshops with working health professionals and successful medical students from the school.

For those considering applying to Oxbridge, we offer a comprehensive package to support students. Students are encouraged to attend Oxbridge taster days and apply for residential courses. We also liaise with Oxbridge representatives regarding interviews and personal statement writing. Students applying for Russell Group universities and courses may need to take exams such as BMAT or STEP and students will be advised of these details.

At FHS Sixth Form we offer our students a variety of opportunities to enhance their life experiences, build self confidence and learn respect. By encouraging students to participate we aim to support their applications for the world of work or higher education. Through enrichment, it is evident that FHS students grow into well rounded, open minded individuals who are recognised on a local, regional and national scale.

We also have a sixth form committee led by the Head Boy and Head Girl. Students may also sign up to be prefects, taking responsibility on lunch duties and events across the school. course criteria and progressionA Levels

These are academic qualifications which require the ability to do extended reading and writing. To study A Levels you will need five GCSEs at grade C or above (including English Language and Maths) and at least a grade B in the subjects you wish to take for A Level. In addition students must have a minimum GCSE APS of 5.3. To study Maths and Sciences you will need an APS of 5.6.

Most students will study three subjects. Students who have outstanding GCSEs (A*-A) will be guided to study four.

The sixth form team will guide you on to the correct courses based on how well you have done at GCSE.

AS/A Levels provide a route to university.

WHAT ARE A LEVELS? A LEVEL CRITERIA

In subjects not taken at GCSE an associated GCSE will be taken into account. For example: B in History, Geography or English Language for A Level Government & Politics.

BTEC grades would only be accepted as one grade within the 5 A*-C grades and for sciences a B must be obtained in both in the Core & Additional science or Triple Science subject.

In all subjects applicants must be endorsed by the Head of Department. Students will be re-coursed where there are concerns raised by the Head of Department. All students will be entered for AS exams in Year 12. The following AS qualifications are stand alone and will not contribute to the final A Level grade: English Lit, History, Sciences, Psychology, Sociology, Geography, Drama, Business Studies, Economics and Computer Science. All other AS qualifications will still contribute 50% to the final A Level grade.

BTECs are vocational qualifications that provide a more practical, real-world approach to learning and skill development alongside a key theoretical background.

BTECs continue to be developed and updated for industry requirements and in response to the needs of learners. This ensures that learners gain maximum benefit from their work whilst qualifying. This could be in readiness for the workplace or continued study at the next level, whether in an academic environment or a more specialist vocational area.

BTEC qualifications that we offer are Extended Certificate (equivalent to one A Level) and Diploma (equivalent to two A Levels). They offer natural progression along a vocational path to university or the world of work.

Level 3 National Diploma & National Extended Certificate In order to access BTEC level 3 courses students will need to attain a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grade A*-D. This can include BTEC courses previously followed. Please check individual subjects for entrance criteria. Options at this level will be to retake GCSE English and/or Maths if they have a D grade.

BTEC Level 2 In order to access BTEC level 2 courses, students will need 4 GCSE or equivalent passes (grade E or above including English Language and Maths.)

Work Experience All students undertaking BTEC courses will be required to complete work experience. Work experience is a compulsory part of BTEC courses.

The school will look at all students on an individual basis and whether they are suitable for the courses chosen. External students will be requested to show their birth certificate, current passport, proof of address and all relevant qualifications.

It will be up to the discretion of the Sixth Form Team as to which courses students are able to follow. This could be subject to change during the autumn term if students are not making the expected progress.

A Level In order to continue into Year 13 students will need to have attained a minimum of 3 Es at AS Level. In circumstances where students have not achieved 3 Es, they will be required to attend an interview with the Director of Sixth Form to look at options and possible re-coursing.

BTEC Level 3 Courses In order to continue into Year 13 students will need to have attained their minimum target grades at BTEC level 3 in all of their subjects.

In addition to the criteria for A Levels, BTEC Level 3 & 2 the following will also be considered:

Level 3 Diploma/Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care This course covers topics such as equality, diversity and rights in health and social care. You will develop effective communication skills for health care and find out the importance of personal and professional development in health and social care. As part of your course you will attend vocational practice placements within health and social care to practice the theory you have learnt in class. The core units also involve you learning about human anatomy and physiology, public health and lifespan development. Optional units include learning about sociological and psychological perspectives in health and social care.

Level 3 Diploma in Sport & Exercise Science Learners will undertake 10 units across two years of which 9 are mandatory. 2 units will be externally assessed. The qualification will prepare learners for employment or further study in the sports science, coaching and fitness sectors. Learners will study units from the Sport and Exercise sector and will be externally examined in Sport and Exercise Physiology and Functional Anatomy. Travel & Tourism

Level 3 Diploma/Extended Certificate in Travel & Tourism Studying a BTEC Level 3 course in Travel and Tourism will allow students to cover a variety of core and specialist subjects that will prepare them for further study or a career in the industry. Units include Investigating the Travel and Tourism industry, The Business of Travel and Tourism, Customer Service and European and Long Haul Destinations. Students will gain transferable skills and knowledge such as employability skills and communication as well as an understanding of the business environment. The course is designed to be vocational with students taking part in organising events and travelling to both UK and European destinations such as Paris. All students will take part in a valuable work experience placement.

CAREER PATHWAYS: The Travel and Tourism industry is thriving with 34 million tourists spending £21.85billion in 2014 alone. The Level 3 course suits students who want to pursue a career in the industry or chose further study at University.

Employment includes: hotel receptionist, cabin crew, retail travel agent, resort representative, tour guide, museum curator.

Level 3 Entrance CriteriaLevel 3 Extended Certificate in Sport & Exercise Science Four units of which three are mandatory and two are external based on Functional Anatomy and Physiology. Mandatory content (83%). External assessment (67%).

A broad basis of study for the sport sector. This qualification is designed to support progression to higher education when taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels.

CAREER PATHWAYS: Employment opportunities include health & fitness instructor, coaching assistant, PE teacher, coach, gym instructor and sports scientist.

STAGE 1 Choose Featherstone Sixth Form and refer to the admissions criteria. STAGE 2 Please read through the prospectus carefully so that you can make an informed decision. If you are unsure about anything, get some advice. In the first instance, speak to your form tutor, a member of the sixth form team or ring the school. STAGE 3 Take a look at the Course Pathways. It will help you to make your choices at the right level. Then, fill out the application form (external students only). These are available to download from our website. STAGE 4 For internal students, you will need to complete an options survey, organised by the sixth form team, to receive a conditional offer.

For external students, you will receive a letter inviting you for an interview so that you can discuss the most appropriate pathway for you. STAGE 5 For external students bring your progress profile with you to your interview. After the interview you will be notified by letter as to whether you have a conditional offer. STAGE 6 Final enrolment will happen during August 2016. If you are offered a place, attendance to the induction week is mandatory.
