The Hamburger technique in writing opinion essays.

• Years of learning English: 6 years

• Aims: Writing opinion essays according to the “Hamburger project” outline. Students were given a photo of a hamburger and were asked to notice its ingredients.

• A hamburger is made up of:

the top bun

the lettuce the tomato, the cheese

the burger

and the …

bottom bun.

Students were then asked to think of a paragraph of an opinion essay as a hamburger. The paragraph would need similar ingredients, or to be exact, parts. The paragraph would need: •The top bun, in other words, the topic sentence. •The lettuce which would be the first point to support the topic sentence. •The burger, a very strong point which would support the topic sentence and develop the topic further. •The tomato would be the third point. •The cheese would be the last point. •The ideas would all be wrapped up with the bottom bun which would be the closing sentence of the paragraph.
