Behavioral Neuroscience Program Description Behavioral Neuroscience focuses on the biological basis of behavior. The program combines the disciplines of biology and psychology in an attempt to facilitate an appreciation of the scope of human behavior and understand how the behavior of humans and other animals is controlled by physiological systems. Course work is designed to provide an understanding of nerve cells, chemical neuro-transmission, and neural circuits as well as fundamental biological processes such as genetic inheritance, development, and physiology and then to see how these biological mechanisms give rise to normal and pathological behavioral states. The curriculum includes a strong background in chemistry and mathematics and prepares students for higher degree granting programs in graduate or medical school. Some BNS graduates enter careers in industry in such areas as biotechnology, bioengineering, neurotechnology and business administration. Students with a bachelor’s degree are qualified for employment in a variety of fields from clinical and basic research to positions in health care or biotechnology.

3. Program peers and aspirants A web-based survey of potential BNS program peers and aspirants identified nine (9) other programs in Behavioral Neuroscience in the continental United States. The Director of each of the individual programs was contacted by phone to gather detailed registration data and curriculum information. Of those programs, data from seven (7) respondents plus Northeastern University are compiled in the following table.

As seen in the table, the BNS program at Northeastern University is one of the

longest running undergraduate BNS programs in the U.S. In addition, it is also the largest BNS program in the U.S. with over three times the number of undergraduate registrants than its’ closest peer. This clearly can be used as a strong indicator of the high level of student interest in BNS at Northeastern University. Next, from a more detailed programmatic standpoint, the BNS program at Northeastern University offers a greater number and a more diverse array of BNS specialty courses than it’s peers. For example, the BNS program at Northeastern University is the only undergraduate BNS major to offer advanced specialty courses in Clinical Neuroscience, Neuroethology, Comparative Neurobiology, Computational Neuroscience and Functional Human Neuroanatomy. These courses help set our program apart from our peers. However, one impressive program aspirant, (Barnard College’s Neuroscience and Behavior Program) offers several courses that would significantly enhance the education of undergraduates within the BNS program at Northeastern. Those courses are Molecular/Cellular Neuroscience, Systems Neuroscience, and Developmental Neurobiology. That not-with-standing it is important to note that the undergraduate program at Barnard College offers a curriculum that is focused on more heavily on Neuroscience as a standalone discipline as compared to a more traditional Behavioral Neuroscience approach. In that regard, it may be more appropriate to use Barnard’s program as a peer in comparative analyses of undergraduate Neuroscience programs.
