Education Agent Engagement - Digital strategies for better outcomesPart 1 - Agent engagement and market intelligence

Effective agent engagement requires an understanding of agent perceptions and how they differ between destination markets. It is also important to monitor how the digital landscape is evolving and which tools are available to manage and maintain engagement.

This part of the session will uncover insights into education agent perceptions from PIER’s market intelligence platform. Also covered will be some digital strategies and supporting tools for engaging education agents including:

- Recruiting the right agents and initial engagement

- Retention and ongoing communication

- Compliance in regards to training

- Data-driven strategy and market intelligence

Participants will also be provided with 1 month of free access to PIER’s market intelligence and agency engagement platform.

Part 2 - Managing risk in international programs

Typically, successful international education programs embrace and manage diversity, support staff development and leadership as well as manage resources for sustainable programs. They adopt approaches to community engagement, diversity and related policy that improve the provider’s client relationships and, more broadly, its global position. This session identifies and examines risk factors that, if not managed effectively, can place a provider in difficulty. These issues relate to the human relations, client service, infrastructure, operational and policy areas of the provider. The session offers research-based, case by case examples and practical strategies to manage risk.

Part 3 – Presentation from the winner of the Agent Pitch competition

As a part of the 2018 Gold coast Commonwealth Games, a campaign was launched to engage onshore and international student recruitment agents in a competition. The winner of the Agent Pitch competition won $15,000 to design and implement a recruitment camping for Queensland, targeting parents.

You can’t ask that! Cross-cultural follies and adventures in international educationIn the world of cross-cultural education, we don’t always get it right and only with hindsight do we realise that we somehow missed the mark. Whether the challenge is communicating cross-cultural issues to our superiors or failing to effectively communicate our message to a student audience, the world of culture and cultural intelligence is one without horizons and with few roadmaps to guide us. Misunderstanding, unintended offence, poor participation and ignorance of the relevant context can ruin the best laid plans of well-intentioned staff in international education. This session aims to build the cross-cultural problem solving competence of participants with the help of a few cultural theories such as the cultural intelligence model and the GLOBE project as applied to the international education context. The session will draw on the expertise, insight and experience of facilitators and participants, to find solutions to common and not so common cross-cultural issues in international education. Tough problems will be explored in a mutually supportive environment.

Beyond the spin: marketing to millennials and Gen Z Today’s generation of international students is not only digital by default – they are politically aware, socially engaged and globally connected. But who are they and what defines them? What are their drives and motivations? And how can we best connect and engage with this emerging generation?

This masterclass will delve beyond the spin and stereotypes. Co-designed and co-delivered by Nishan David (former Westpac Future Leader Scholar), as well as three current students, it will offer genuine insights into how we can connect and engage with this tech-savvy generation. Together we will explore how we can apply these insights into authentic campaigns that cut through the noise and genuinely engage.

Purposefully Leading for Sustainable SuccessThis masterclass will cover the topics of personal purpose, purposeful leadership, the benefits of diversity, and sustainable success. More detail is provided in the masterclass format description below.

Keynote

This masterclass will commence with an introductory keynote infused with numerous case examples on the power of purposeful leadership and the benefits of diversity in both leadership teams and customer groups. It will emphasise the importance of sustainable success over short-termism.

Reflective task and group discussion

Following the keynote, the audience will be guided through a reflective exercise to explore their personal purpose and how it relates to their career choices and leadership impact.

Design thinking activity in small groups

Following the discussion about diversity, we will turn our minds to the concept of sustainable success. Participants will be given post it notes to brain-dump what sustainable success looks like for the international education industry. After all ideas are captured, a brief discussion will follow.

Interactive discussion

Each group will be asked to collate their ideas into a mind map which they will then present back to the main group.

Q&A

The workshop would conclude with time for Q&A between the speaker and the audience. Each participant will also be encouraged to reflect on (and share) one thing they’re going to do as a result of what they’ve heard/thought/learned in today’s workshop.
