In 2008, James donated $20,000 to a committee to elect Barack Obama and gathered almost 20,000 people at the Quicken Loans Arena for a viewing of Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's 30-minute American Stories, American Solutions television advertisement

In response to Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, James sent $200,000 in supplies to evacuees in Louisiana, Texas and Mississippi, donated 1,000 backpacks and school supplies to students in Akron and Cleveland, distributed basketballs to every recreation center in Akron and Cleveland and paid for the renovation of the Women's Health Center at Summa Health System

He also participated in numerous programs with the Cavaliers and through the Make-A-Wish Foundation

On December 1, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Parks, age 42, refused to obey bus driver James Blake's order that she give up her seat to make room for a white passenger and her action sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott that desegregated the city’s buses

She was not the first African American to refuse to give up her seat, nor was that the first time she got involved in the Civil Rights Movement

She speaks out on behalf of women who have been beaten by their partners

While not a citizen, she has a green card to live and work in the US
