ics Non-woven Polyester

The non-woven polyester reinforcement used in SOPREMA membranes gives them great elongation capacity and increased puncture resistance. These qualities are most certainly assets for membranes exposed to the extreme North American weather.

Glass Mat

Glass mat reinforcement provide SOPREMA membranes with excellent dimensional stability, despite the many weather changes they endure.

Composite

The composite reinforcement used for SOPREMA High Performance membranes combines the benefits of glass mat and non-woven polyester. Indeed, they show great resistance due to the glass mat stability and the exceptional properties of polyester with regard to elongation and puncture. It provides better wind resistance than the system reinforced with conventional polyester, whether virgin or recycled.

9SIGNATURES THAT SPEAK VOLUMES

LEED

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a third-party certification program as well as a comparison standard internationally recognized for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Many SOPREMA products are qualified to contribute to obtaining LEED credits. Look for the LEED logo to recognize them. For more details and information on the contribution of our products in obtaining these credits, see the LEED product data sheets on the SOPREMA website.

FLAMELESS SOLUTIONS

You will find the FLAMELESS SOLUTIONS signature in connection with products that do not require the use of propane tools. These products therefore meet safety concerns for projects where it is not possible to use flame.

DUO SELVEDGE TECHNOLOGY

For safer installation, some membranes are equipped with DUO SELVEDGE, a unique technology developed by SOPREMA and patented in 2004. A percentage of the surface of DUO SELVEDGE, which varies depending on the product, is sealed with self-adhesive. The rest of the selvedge surface is then safely sealed with hot air.

The following information covers tested roofing systems tested in accordance with CSA A123.21-10 Standard test method for the dynamic wind uplift resistance of membrane-roofing systems. SOPREMA roofing systems are tested in several combinations and under different pressures. Moreover, contrary to the Factory Mutual (FM) publications, there is no minimum for the published pressures.

Systems tested in accordance with the CSA A123.21-10 standard that have satisfied its requirements are listed under the CSA A123.21-10 tab on the EXP website (www.exp.com).

FM 4470

Here, the following information covers certification of SOPREMA Inc. roofing systems by the Factory Mutual (FM) Insurance Company. This certification is related to standard 4470 developed by FM that was designed to evaluate the performance of roofing systems with respect to pressure exerted by wind on buildings.

The pressure exerted during the 4470 standard simulation tests is static. SOPREMA roofing systems are certified in several possible combinations with various exerted pressures. Minimum acceptable pressure for the FM standard is 60 psf (2.87 kPa). Our systems are listed for steel and concrete decks.

Systems that have received FM certification are entered in the RoofNav database that lists all roofing systems from various manufacturers. This database can be found at www.roofnav.com. For more information, please ask to your technical representative.

ULC-S107

The following information concerns certification of SOPREMA Inc. roofing systems obtained from the Underwriters Laboratories of Canada (ULC). This certification arises from the requirements of Section 3, Article 3.15.1, of the National Building Code of Canada, which stipulates that roofing systems must be tested according to the testing procedure in standard CAN/ULC S-107 M87 “Standard test methods for fire tests of roof coverings.”

Standard ULC S-107 categorizes roofing systems according to their fire resistance performance into three distinct categories: A, B and C. The National Building Code of Canada requires that roofing systems meet one of these classifications to comply with the requirements cited in Section 3. SOPREMA systems are listed at ULC according to classification and are available at www.ulc.ca.

CGSB 37.56-M (9TH DRAFT)

Canadian General Standards Board (CGSB) is the federal government agency that established this standard. Membranes identified with CGSB 37.56-M (9TH DRAFT) signature, which have successfully met a series of physical and mechanical tests, meet all standards required by the National Building Code.

ASTM D 6162

SOPRASTAR products tested in accordance with ASTM D 6162 comply with the stringent standards recognized in Canada and the USA. The ASTM D6162 Standard evaluates the performance of SBS modified bitumen membranes with composite reinforcement for building roofing or waterproofing. These high standards are unquestionably a guarantee of quality.

NABA

Air barrier materials are defined by their air permeance and the amount of air that passes through them. NABA defines an air barrier material as one that has been tested and has an airpermeancelessthan0.02L/(s•m2) @ 75 Pa (0.004 cfm/ft2 @ 1.57 lb/ft2). Search for the NABA logo to know which SOPREMA products have completed successfully the NABA evaluation process.

CCMC

The Canadian Construction Materials Centre (CCMC) is a part of the National Research Council of Canada. It offers the construction industry a national evaluation service for innovative non-standardized materials, products, systems and services in all types of construction. CCMC will also evaluate products that are covered under the scope of recognized standards.

CCMC provides an opinion on whether a construction product or system complies to the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada, among others, as an acceptable solution. Acceptable solutions are those that comply with the code’s applicable requirements.

These products outperform other products in their category. To be recognized as such, they must possess at least one of the following characteristics:

• Acompositereinforcement(non-wovenpolyesterandglassmat)meetingtherequirementsofStandard ASTM D6162 (Type I, II or III): Combining the advantages of glass mat and polyester reinforcements, composite reinforcement used in SOPREMA’s High Performance products stand out for their excellent mechanical properties and dimensional stability.

• Acompositeproductcomprisingaconventionalmembrane(SBSmodifiedbitumenwithpolyesterreinforcement) factory laminated on a support panel (asphalt, mineral fibres such as rock wool, or high density polyisocyanurate): The panels on which membranes are laminated have excellent dimensional stability. These panels allow you to save time, because their composition reduces the number of steps needed for installation.

• Auniquepartial-bondingdesign:Someproductshaveanexclusivepartial-bondingdesignwithdiscontinuous self-adhesive strips that give remarkable resilience, since the adverse effects of thermal cycles are reduced by distributing the movement of the support panels.

COLVENT SYSTEM

The COLVENT High Performance roofing waterproofing system is composed of a base sheet membrane installed partially adhered because of its discontinuous self-adhesive strips and a cap sheet membrane. The COLVENT waterproofing system reduces the adverse effects of thermal cycles by redistributing base panel movement. The COLVENT base sheet membrane is easily installed directly onto the SOPRA-ISO PLUS insulation boards.

SOPRAFIX SYSTEM

SOPRAFIX is a heavy-duty two-ply roofing waterproofing system composed of a base sheet membrane mechanically fastened to the deck with SOPRAFIX screws and plates and a cap sheet membrane. SOPRAFIX has high resistance to tearing by wind.

To ensure the safest possible installation, the SOPRAFIX BASE 630 base sheet membrane has the unique DUO SELVEDGE technology developed by SOPREMA and patented in 2004. The advantage of the SOPRAFIX SYSTEM is that it has fewer components, and is much quicker to install.

SOPRASTAR MEMBRANES

SOPRASTAR reflective cap sheet membranes are ultra-white. The reflective granuled surface that covers SOPRASTAR FLAM HD GR and SOPRASTAR STICK HD GR membranes protects the elastomeric bitumen from degradation caused by heat or UV rays and conserves the superior flexibility of the membranes even longer. The same benefits can be obtained with the SOPRASTAR WF membrane and its multi-ply white film.

UNILAY SYSTEM

The PERIMET’R membrane is a strong base sheet made of SBS modified bitumen. It is used as a roof base sheet at the base of flashings and details where a self-adhesive membrane is used as a base sheet. Both sides of the membrane have a 200-mm (8 in) selvedge. This feature allows the installation of the self-adhesive base sheet on flashings, without the need to burn the thermofusible plastic film of a traditional base sheet.

Unroll the polyester reinforcement on the liquid resin, making sure the SMOOTH SIDE IS FACING UP (natural unfolding procedure).

While applying gentle pressure, roll the reinforcement using a medium nap roller soaked with resin in order to remove air bubbles, wrinkles, etc.

Apply an additional liquid resin mixture on the reinforcement until it is completely saturated and continue to work the resin.

149INTER CLIP SYSTEM

APPLICATION

1. Place INTER CLIP pitch pocket at desired location and trace the outside edge as a guide. The pitch pocket should be placed so as to ensure a clearance of at least 25 mm (1 in) between the inside of the INTER CLIP and the protrusion.

2- Seal the base of the protrusion with the IC SEALANT to prevent the IC DUOMASTIC leaking in the opening.

3- Apply a coat of IC SEALANT over the entire surface of the membrane where the pitch pocket will be placed, so as to prevent any water infiltration between the pocket and the membrane.

4. Position the pitch pocket and apply a bead of IC SEALANT to the outer perimeter of the pitch pocket. Use the tip of a trowel to perfectly adhere the sealant to the membrane.

5. Transfer an initial quantity of IC DUOMASTIC (approximately half a nozzle length) from the pitch pocket to ensure a homogeneous mixture of parts A and B.

6. Completely fill the pitch pocket with IC DUOMASTIC.


Recommended surfaces are the following:- SBS modified bitumen granulated

membranes;- SBS modified bitumen sanded

membranes;- Organic felts or oxidized bitumen

membranes such as SOPRAGLASS 40 and 100 (multi-ply roofing).

IC SEALANT and IC DUOMASTIC must be stored at temperatures between 18 and 29 °C (65 to 85 °F) 24 hours before being used.

DUOMASTIC must be applied using the battery-powered applicator only.

COLPHENE ICF is a self-adhesive waterproofing membrane designed for the waterproofing of insulated concrete form (ICF) foundations in expanded or extruded polystyrene. It is composed of SBS modified bitumen and a polyethylene woven complex. The self-adhesive underface is protected by a silicone release paper.The COLPHENE ICF membrane is applied directly to the expanded or extruded polystyrene surface of ICF foundations. Clean, dry, and seamless surfaces do not require priming. If special conditions require a primer, such as a high concentration of dust, SOPREMA recommends the use of the water-based ELASTOCOL STICK H2O primer. Solvent-based primers may damage the polystyrene and therefore must not be used.

MACADEN

MINI-MACADEN

The MACADEN is a specialized piece of equipment that allows the automated installation of ANTIROCK thermofusible membranes on bridges. The MACADEN can be used in summer or winter, at temperatures as low as -10 °C.The operation of the MACADEN is fully automated. At first, a hot air blast dries the surface while a burner constantly heats the membrane to liquefy the bitumen. Then, the liquid bitumen fills all of the imperfections of the surface, ensuring the fusion of the waterproofing membrane with the substrate. Finally, a roller applies pressure on the membrane to create a smooth and uniform surface.With the MACADEN, works are quickly completed. The MACADEN 10 can install up to 200 m (650 ft) of 1 m wide (39 in) membranes, without downtime for refueling. By using more than one machine, it is possible to achieve waterproofing and pavement of a bridge in one night. Road users are therefore less disturbed, as traffic can travel its normal course during peak hours.

The MINI-MACADEN is a machine developed by SOPREMA for installing bitumen membranes. Propelled and self-guided, it ensures the unrolling, welding and smoothing of 8 or 10 m rolls.Its size is suited for transport in a van for greater mobility, and it can lay up to 1,000 m² per day with four people, regardless of the outdoor temperature (> 0 °C) or wind conditions.

EEXTENSIVEGREENROOFExtensive green roofs are characterized by the minimal maintenance they require and restricted access: they are generally closed to the public. The vegetation is often composed of low-growing, hardy, herbaceous or perennial plants resistant to drought and extreme conditions.

FFLASHINGSFlashings are the part of the waterproofing applied on the overhang of the roof that must be connec-ted to the waterproofing of the surface. They must be installed with great care in order to stop water from penetrating under the roofing, and are requi-red to adapt to various shapes.i

IINTENSIVEGREENROOFIntensive green roofs on roof decks are similar to traditional gardens and include a wider variety of plants, notably shrubs and trees. They are generally open to the public and designed to be seen. Their landscaping can also include alleys, benches, lighting, sculptures and ponds.

LLIQUIDWATERPROOFINGIn some cases, the installation of a waterproofing sheet membrane is complicated, delicate or even impossible. The application of a liquid waterproo-fing system then becomes the only available solu-tion for completion of more problematic details. A liquid waterproofing system also does not neces-sitate the use of flame on worksites, which might present a fire hazard. SOPREMA offers a full line of liquid waterproofing systems marketed under the ALSAN brand name.

MMECHANICALLYFASTENEDThis kind of partially-bonded system is composed of a base sheet installed with mechanical faste-ners located at regular intervals on the lengthwise selvedges. Only joints are adhered. This process exists in two-ply (SOPRAFIX) or single-ply (UNI-LAY) systems. This technique has the advantage of reducing preparatory work.

MULTI-PLYThe multi-ply waterproofing system is composed of several layers of bituminous membranes. The different layers are welded together or adhered with hot bitumen. The two-ply system is the most common type.

NNON-WOVENPOLYESTERNon-woven polyester is a flexible, durable and elastic reinforcement, which is particularly well suited to the constraints of a waterproofing mem-brane. Its performance, notably in term of punc-ture resistance, can be improved by varying the gram weight of non-woven polyester: 180 g/m2, 250 g/m2 or 350 g/m2.

RREINFORCEMENTThe function of the waterproofing membrane rein-forcement is to make sure that the membrane is tear and puncture resistant. SOPREMA uses three types of reinforcement: glass mat, non-woven polyesters and composites.

SSBSPOLYMER-MODIFIEDBITUMENBitumen is well-known for its ability to stop water penetration. However, it needs to be modified to better resist temperature variations and prema-ture aging, and to keep its elastic properties even at low temperature. Bitumen has gained elasticity in the past thirty years because of the addition of SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) polymers. This elasticity provides excellent resistance against the movement of the substrate. Furthermore, the aging of the bitumen is greatly reduced, which allows its long term performance qualities to be maintained.

SEMI-INTENSIVEGREENROOFSemi-intensive systems have a similarity to that of extensive green roofs, but offer an accessibility and diversity of their vegetated cover that is more like intensive green roofs. The selected plants usually require minimal irrigation and mainte-nance.

SINGLE-PLYIt is a waterproofing system composed of a single membrane (UNILAY) which is thicker than the membranes of any two-ply systems. This instal-lation process requires particular care since the seaming of the selvedges must be perfect. Appli-cation is done with mechanical fastening.

TTWO-PLY(SYSTEM)This is the most popular system used for bitu-minous roofing application. It can be installed on all types of roofs and slopes, including low pitch roofs. Application of the base sheet is done direct-ly on the substrate; the cap sheet is fully adhered on the base sheet, and installed in an offset or a crossed position in relation to the base sheet.

VOCsVolatile organic compounds (VOCs) are substances composed of at least one carbon and one hydrogen atom. They can be found in a gaseous state in the atmosphere. Several of these compounds contri-bute to photochemical reactions responsible for the formation of ground level ozone. Some others, like benzene and formaldehyde, are also conside-red toxic and can cause negative consequences to a person’s health.
