The value of that which is intangible can be found in the ideas and concepts that

influence us and shape us into who we are. The rare ability of a an artist to evoke a

measure of emotions and catch his patron up in rapture like state is what distinguishes

a great artise. Grammy winner Rafael Saadiq falls in that category. It is a majestic and

artful undertaking to put feelings to music, and to hear the harmony of the world.

In his internal bastion of creativity, the musician-composer generates the sounds which

were skillfully extracted from his free flowing well spring in an oasis of musical ingenuity.

It is soon evident that Saadiq feels a real life connection to the music and breathes

that life into the melody. To witness his infectious enthusiasm when he expresses his

artistic vision is to witness a tour de force like a full blown gale wind blowing from the

talent shows where he first performed in Oakland to the huge current day venues he

commands now.

In short, the music speaks for the man and gives rise to listeners clamoring to hear. The

study of Raphael Saadiq is a lesson in creativity from blues masters to dee jays from

around the world sharing their creations with him for critiquing. They listen intently

and absorb his wisdom on the subject

like a sponge in the ocean water. The

teacher is not unnecessarily critical

or judgemental. He instead helps his

charges focus and reflect on the emotion

they want to capture. Saadiq mentally

and tonally sketches an expression of

humanity and history in the music. The

truth and purity in his sound is a musical

imprint marking his place in the world.

Saadiq’s fascinating and poignant

recollection of purchasing his first bass

guitar from a pawn shop and knowing

that was the vessel that would put Tony!

Toni! Tonè on the scene and propel him

on his way to fame and greatness, one

can be reasonably sure that same things

are fated. Destined, and armed with

the legacy of his parents instruction and

support, he left the nest and ventured

into the music industry.

Saadiq’s music is his calling, which is

simultaneously a calling to recognize

and appreciate the majesty of the human

spirit. He implores us to examine our rich

musical heritage and listen — really listen

to blues, jazz and R&B, they are our

legacy and inbred in who we are.

“I believe in art and expression. No matter who you are and what you do ... you can find

a way to express yourself artistically, says Grammy Award-winning jazz trumpeter Roy

Hargrove. The world renowned artiist first impressed listeners with his marvelous and

mesmerizing mix of jazz tinge with funk back in his high school days in New York where

he was discovered by Winton Marsalis while still in high school.

Hargrove like many of the profoundly among us lives in a more spiritual realm and is

given to following his intuition or that still voice inside of him rather than over thinking

a situation or his circumstances. “The way I feel it’s like everything I do has God in it

somehow, and I feel as long as I put my trust there, I can’t go wrong,” he says with the

surety of a deeply felt devotion.

financial success. “It’s like this if

you’ve got a big name you get the

treatment, but if you’re a virtual

unknown you get what you get,”

he says. “People should play the

music because they love it. It’s

not to be famous or to be adored.

It builds your integrity every

time you practice and learn your

instrument more. I think that

commercial success is good and

makes it easier to be comfortable,

but you can lose focus about why you’re

doing it in the first place,” Hargrove adds.

One might be surprised to encounter a

relatively young man who is such a devout

disciple of jazz. One might be even more

surprised that at the age of nine the

then budding musician new with certainty

that he’d found his calling in life and

having done so he determined to see

it through. “We live in a society where

the whole concept of art and creativity

are pushed back. The whole concept of

creative a creative expression and art are not

trumpeted. Even my parents ... told me to

‘go to school in case the music thing doesn’t

work out.’” But Hargrove responded that

he believed in his art and that it was not

only the right path for him — it was the

only path for him.

Having been both band member and

band leader, the young musician has had to

make some hard calls to preserve his art and

his professional integrity. Growing up in

the very grown up world of jazz music and

jazz musicians he grew up —fast— on the

band stand and had to handle himself as

a man sooner than most of his peers. That

maturity has cultivated an innate sense

of timing and being able to feel the vibe

in the room. “If you’re a band leader you

have to have hindsight and foresight. You

have to think for everyone ahead of time

espcially with these large ensembles. You

have to anticipate what musicians are going

to do before they do it in order to keep the

ship running tightly, so that there aren’t so

many train wrecks,” explains Hargrove.

In the music industry and the world of jazz in particular, late nights and raucous living

are par for the course. To the outsider looking in and even those that live the cool lifestyle

it appears to be glamours way to make a living and one’s mark in this world. Jazz bassist

Ron Carter has not only mastered the music, but he has mastered the lifestyle and is

regularly sought out by a myriad of musicians for direction in both their craft and their

lifestyles. “It’s like playing jazz in a group. It’s more complicated because there are these

other opinions that are on the table. And as decisions are being made, you have to think

carefully when you make your pick from all of these choices coming at you.” The legendary

performer, composer, arranger and music instructor is noted for being able to discern

between the the right and wrong choices, even in the midst of the murky and mystical life

that is the life of a jazz artist.

While a relatively hectic schedule keeps Carter traveling and playing almost nightly,

the seasoned bassist finds sanctuary in his art. “In my line of work we play in different

environments, different locations, different concert halls, different night clubs, different

studios and all of that on an hourly basis sometimes. ... Our sanctuary has to come from

inside of us. We take this sanctuary, we take this space, we take this room in our heads to

make this room fit,” Carter elaborated.

The prolific player’s longevity, his unparalleled creativity and his long standing as an artist

earmark an already remarkable career. Carter has been making his signature sound for more

than fifty years, a fait accompli in and of itself in the music industry. He is affectionately

called Checkpoint Charlie by his peers and a beacon or the headquarters in deference to

his genius. Distinctions like these aren’t arbitrarily assigned — they are only afforded to

men who occupy a certain position in life and carry themselves with meaningful demeanor.

“Those designations are given to a person who everyone in the group trust to be the guide

and lead them in the right direction. Their trust goes to the extent that they may not in

their own heart believe that this guy is right, but he has been right enough times that your

going to go one more time with it, and if we are wrong we are all wrong together. I love that

responsibility, I love that trust image,” beams Carter

The legendary performer,composer, arranger and music instructor adds that his ability

to draw on his experiences both past and present and relate them to any current or future

situation are what makes him successful in his endeavors. But Carter’s hard jazz man edges

soften when he talks about the legacy he is leaving for his sons. “My sons have watched

me all of their lives, go through all these various phases of growth. Financial, musical, and

emotional and they have been able to pick from my experiences cause they see them all the

time. ... ‘What note did he play that has a special meaning to him? Maybe I can find a note

with equivalent meaning to me based on the sound of this note. Kids are great imitators

and I think that parents and kids are great magnets for each other. I’ve always kind of said

to my sons be productive citizens in society. I have tried to give them an example of being

productive,” Carter concludes thoughtfully.

Carters ability to address the entire being and soul of a person through undoubtedly

works so well because he communicates from his.

It’s fascinating to listen in on the musing of a certified brain scientist, who freely elucidates

the functionality of the brain and meticulously breaks down how it is impacted from

natural and unnatural substances.

“The reality is, what you’re body uses, it uses it on a molecular level. For example, if you

eat a hamburger, it goes into your body and gets broken down into your stomach into

molecules and it’s molecules that our cells use, Dr. Michael Pratt says. “It doesn’t use that

burger. Once you break them down into protein, to the vitamins, to the minerals, to the

amino acids, the cells can pick them up and use them. Really you are 500 billion cells that

the brain barrier. We can give you pills

that will block the molecules that break

down serotonin. And therefore allowing

your body to build up serotonin naturally.

How do you deliver a pill to that touch the

serotonin receptors in your brain. Actually

there’s more serotonin receptors in your

gut, your intestines than in your brain and

in your red blood cells. And so the side

effects come from things like that.”

It was ironic that Melvin Van Peeples most famous filmmaking production was 1971’s Sweet

Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song.

Van Peeples, 78, directed, scripted and edited the film as well as wrote the score and directed

the marketing campaign. The movie struck a chord in black america, grossed over $10 million

and received acclamation from the Black Panther Party. A quarter century later, his son, Mario

Van Peeples, 53, would direct, co-write the movie “Panther” about the meteoric rise and

spectacular fall of this revolutionary black organization.

We caught up with the black filmmaking dynasty, who were in between a panel discussion

paying homage to black filmmakers. “I thought it was cool. I thought that the more things

change the more things stay the same,“ said son Mario Van Peeples. “It’s always interesting to

get a perspective on history because a lot of times it’s history and not our story and dealing

with giants like Melvin van Peeples and Fred Williams and Roger E. Mosley who were there

and it was not just history but our story. And that is really cool. I was just happy to have an

excuse to sit with these brothers and hear the truth. And as you can see in there, no one is

mincing any words. We’re pretty much saying what we feel.”

And they feel, as Melvin Van Peeples, that the tide has not changed much -- even the irritating

act of denying any vestige or pride by always killing off black co-stars in films. “Unless you

Melvin barked, “Unless someone

the ending. In all of the movies

you ended up dying.”

But Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss

Song lives -- a story of artistic

rebellion cloaked in the era’s

call for Black Power -- not only

continues to live in the hearts

of those who saw it, but also

from his son. In 2004, Mario

van Peebles paid the ultimate

tribute to his father by making

BAADASSSSS!, which told the

story behind the making of Sweet

Sweetback’s Baadassss Song.

Father Melvin doesn’t suffer fools

lightly and he practically chewed

out a questioners like one of his

famous stogies when she asked

why the black media coined the

now infamous term “Blaxploitation”. Why did black media call it “Blaxploitation” films?

Here’s my thing. One fool can throw a rock in the water that 12 wise men can’t fish out. I

don’t waste my time on stupidity. Not your question, but the person who spent the time

doing that . It was an error and I think the error was leaped upon.”

Mario quickly diffused the situation:

“I think that my dad is saying in essence is that he’s efficient with his energy. He doesn’t

sweat what he aint doing. He ain’t in marketing, so he gets out there and does the best that

he can . That’s where it ends for us. You always hope that it lands and gets resonance with

people and finds an audience. But that’s not that it’s all about. You got to put the work out

there, do good work. You think that if you

give a thirsty person dirty water, he will

drink it. But if you give him clean water,

he’ll know the difference. That’s a good

thing to think.”

The father and son still work on projects

together, but not with the frequency of the

days of “Posse”, the story of black western

cowboys who fought the oppressive

government and outlaws to keep their

land. Inquiring minds want to know when

Mario will return to the directing limelight

he experienced when he directed/acted

and/or wrote classics New Jack City, Posse

and Panther in a five-year period between

1991-95. “Actually, we have something

out on TV One called “Mario Green

House“, where our family is building an

iconological sustainable house in Baldwin

Hills. And that’s on every Sunday at 6

p.m. and that’ me and pop and my kids

and its good to get into mother nature,“

son Mario. “Because often you think that’s

something for someone else to worry

about? Not so, look at the 9th Ward.

When climate change hits people of color

often get hit first and worst. We have to be

aware of what’s happening around us. And

even in our own neighborhoods, you see

food Apartheid. You have the fried foods,

we talked about that, the Popeye’s and

French fries in our neighborhoods. So on

our show, we go into how we live and how

we eat.”

“When I think about sanctuary, I think about the innermost sanctum of the Most High

and I commune, God of the Great Universe, the Great Presence. There is a place where

I go in my backyard. And there is a place where go in my home and there is a place I go

at the beach. And I just sit and begin to contemplate my oneness with his presence, who

is the purveyor of all wisdom and power and guidance, sense and direction,“ he says. “So

being still and going into states of meditation provides a powerful sanctuary that allows

me to be buffered against the vicissitudes of human experiences, the ups and down of

human living. The inner sanctuary becomes an outer sanctuary, that everywhere I go I see

tremendous opportunity for human creativity. “

So many African Americans are

emotionally bankrupt and wonder

why they continue to be besieged by ill

circumstances and why they can never stay

healthy. When people cease the futile and

fruitless practice of searching for happiness

through conspicuous consumption,

materialism, outward acceptance,

substance abuse and promiscuity and turn

inward to find the higher power within

them, they will find all they search for

-- and more.

“We have a fountain in my office, it

represent the living waters. When Jesus

the Christ when he spoke to the women at

the well ‘I have water to drink from which

you will thirst no more’. he spoke of living

water which means a living teaching and

way of life that is spiritually oriented.

That when individuals are living their lives

towards that which is eternal, that which

is timeless. Nothing else in the world that

can quench that thirst. The only thing

that can quench our thirst when we make

that contact that which is alive, that which

is eternal, that which is forever. Which are

the qualities of life, passion, love, beauty,

order … These are from the mind of God.

So the living water speaks to that truth. “

Steve Ewing has been kicking tires and getting customers approved for car loans for

more than two decades now. As president and CEO of Atlanta-based car giant Wade

Ford, the Montclair, N.J., native climbed the ladder of success with catlike dexterity

and remained relentless in his drive to achieve his objectives. “The desire to achieve is

something you can be taught, or you can inherit a solid work ethic from your parents ...

I have always been someone who was reaching and thought to do the best that I could. I

wanted my things to be the best I could make them. As I was coming along I knew there

was a lifestyle that I wanted to have.”

Although the ultra successful auto dealer earned a degree in journalism and initially

planned to cultivate a career in the media, the enterprising Ewing made an abrupt and

possibly risky career decision and changed gears altogether.

“I was impatient. I had the confidence to know that whatever business got into I

was going to make it succcessful. I had been working in the car business and went from

salesman to sales manager to general sales manager. ... Ford had education courses that

you could take at the time to get you up to speed on accounting, so I decided then to take

some business courses. I needed to understand the numbers, and what debits and credits

meant versus who Shakespeare and Chaucer were,” he explains matter-of-factly.

Five Ford franchises later it’s more than evident that he made the right choice. Ewing

admits there were some obstacles which might have been daunting for a lesser man or

presented an opportunity to exploit a situation and use it as a rationale to bail. “I don’t

look for excuses. The biggest obstacle is getting our people to come and support our

businesses. And that’s something that happens across the board. ... At the end of the day,

I want to sell cars to all people,” he says in the composed and confident manner he’s best

known for.

Ewing’s mantra is a simple one: “The proof of one’s ability is measured by results.

When you have a job to do, do your job. and when you have an opportunity do it to the

best of your ability. ... somebody will notice your dedication,” he concludes.

He didn’t exactly set a dynamite to the jails and let the inmates run free, but that’s what

opponents of Dallas District Attorney Craig Watkins would insinuate vociferously when

he took office. One of the first orders of business when he was elected into office was to

exonerate wrongfully incarcerated individuals through modern technology, mainly DNA

evidence and other legal tools, which was coincidentally overwhelmingly black.

Today, Watkins is working on preventative measures, helping individuals to repel or

resist the temptations that reach out to them from the streets like tentacles. Oftentimes,

African Americans, particularly black men, are not cognizant of the ramifications of illicit

behavior until after they have been caught. Attorney Watkins wants to change this.

“I think that intelligence is a relative term. I think we all have a certain amount of

intelligence. Where fall short is we don’t understand the consequences of our actions. And

in order for us to be productive citizens and to lead our families we need to look at the

criminal justice system as a starting point and if we realized that this system was designed

for particularly individuals to be a part of it, then we can go into it strategically and go

into it and be in a place where those individuals are.”

The prison-industrial complex is an apparatus that is in place to sustain the status quo,

Watkins says. “So in terms of intelligence, if we have a true understanding of why the

criminal justice system is here and what it’s for then it’s less likely for us to be a part of it

and we can be in a position to control it.”

Education, Watkins, ensures is one of the greatest tools to not only create upward

mobility and transport individuals from undesirable circumstances, it will help buffer

individuals from an institution that devours young lives whole. “Intellect and the criminal

mind and what you need to think about the before you commit the crime. When you

thinka bout the criminal justice system as it relates to the educational system, when

the majority of individuals find themselves on the wrong side of the criminal justice

system aren’t educated, it tell us that we would go a long way if we would put stock into

educating so we can be productive citizens.

i r v A s h F o r dIrv Asford Jr is not your typical nine to five bank executive. As senior vice president of

Public Affairs at Comerica Bank Texas and Community Development and external Affairs director for Comerca Texas speaks volumes about his commitment to excellence and exceptional service. “I’m one of those guys who thinks his work is never finished. I’m always on it, particularly in the communities I work in. There is lot to be done, so I’m always aware that although I achieve one goal, I know there are others waiting to be [realized],” he explains.

Certainly not one to rest on his laurels or delude himself with believing that he has “arrived,” the industrious Ashford is the recipient of numerous civic awards and has been recognized professionally many times over for his achievements in the world of banking and finance. “I am a member of several transatlantic public policy and international relation organizations. My hobby is making sure I am aware of what’s going on globally that may impact the United States. The world is a big or as small as your grasp of what is going on,” he says.

In 2007, Ashford was appointed to the United States delegate class of the British-American Project. Ashford says a lot of what has transpired in his life is the direct result of his will power and the support of people around him encouraging to achieve an end — an approach he also extends to his work environment. “In business school you learn that managers must lead, plan, organize and control. As a leader, the trick is knowing when to act. A leader should have vision, resolve and know when and how to allow the team to do whatever is necessary to get the job done in an ethical manner. Leaders must also respect the thoughts and opinions of those around them and never forget that the power to lead is a gift that can be taken away if not used properly,” he advises..

A graduate of Oberlin College in Ohio, Ashford earned dual master’s degrees — one in public affairs from the University of Texas and one in business administration from the University of Dallas. He is a Woodrow Wilson International Studies and Public Policy Fellow and an American Marshall Fellow.

Criminal Defense attorney Todd Perkins was born and raised in Detroit, Michigan,

where he still resides today. His path in litigation – and his commitment to learning - has

impressively led to him becoming partner at Perkins & Inniss, PLLC, but is has also

provided him with a very insightful vantage point regarding people, particularly African

American youths.

Having seen all walks of life traverse the

criminal justice system, he’s encountered

his fair share of young black males in

that environment. Recollection of his

experiences with them evokes in him a

conviction regarding a critical “key” that he

holds near and dear to his heart: education.

He says: “I grew up in an household where

my mother always told us about education

being something that nobody can take away

from you. You can take away money, you

can take away material things, but they can

never take your education away. So, I’m a

big proponent of education and I believe

that through it, a lot of societal ills can be

resolved or at least ameliorated.

Based on his observations, Perkins feels that

almost everything boils down to intelligence.

He presents it as the cornerstone of having a

chance at a positive trajectory in life.

“I’m in the neighborhoods many days,

doing community work, mentoring and

there’s a tag that they have out there that it’s

not cool to want to do some of those things

that are positive. We have to change that

psyche that particularly young black men

have,” he said. “I go to court and I feel way

outnumbered when I look at the number

of black lawyers...but again in younger

black men, they believe it’s cool to not go to

school, it’s cool to hang out and drink and

smoke...we have to change that. We have to

let them know it’s cool to get an A. That’s

the only way they’ll succeed.”

Lamenting the sagging pants culture

that exists today, Perkins feels that - as

occurred in his own life - once you have

the foundation of education and you learn

how to play the game of success, you can

ultimately begin calling your own shots...he

has his law firm partnership to prove it.

“There’s a certain image that I had when I

first started, I had the tight fade and a beard

and mustache, but as you develop and

grow into your own individual and your

own personality, you gain a little freedom.

There’s a game plan out there and as long

as they [young black males] play the game

long enough, then they can start making

the rules.

his constituents as part of a voting body that helps to determine the overall political

direction for the city. But when you drill down to the specifics of such a role, you discover

that community leadership is at its core and with that comes impacting attitudes and

influencing outcomes. No easy fete. Tate, however, has a firm grasp on what it takes rise to

the occasion. His experiences and his faith have afforded him the wisdom to cut straight

to the chase of giving back, speaking hope into the lives of the otherwise hopeless, and

challenging men, black men to overcome.

“Being intelligent doesn’t just mean being intelligent today, it also means being intelligent

tomorrow.” he offers as his take on what intelligence means. “We can’t just look at the

situation we’re in right now and believe that this is the only only place that we’re gonna be

in life. We have so much potential and it’s just a matter of us realizing that potential.”

The quote, “These are the times that try men’s souls,” by founding father Thomas Paine is

invoked by his statements during these days of widespread hardship, which seems to echo

profoundly throughout the various struggling communities that comprise Tate’s district -

and Detroit at large. But he’s unshaken. Current conditions give him the incentive to reach

back, the opportunity to build, and the occasion to transform.

“The one thing that I talk about is my faith and we have to start looking more to our

spirituality...we all have different religions, but my God teaches me that we have a true

responsibility to help others, to transform,” he says. “So, if that means that you have the

ability to help someone else, it also means going back into your community. Some of us

have grown up into situations where we are afraid or we don’t have the confidence. Some

people were abused or neglected...we have to understand as black men, though, that we

are some of the most intelligent beings in the history of this world. We’ve done some great

things and I think that it’s important for us to start to realize that we have the ability to do

even greater things than we’ve done up to this point.”

J o h n v i e r A“ When I think about the word intelligence, I look at it as, you really need to be thinking

about how do you take the skills that you have, apply them to your job responsibilities and really do that in a responsible way. It’s more than just being smart, you need to take your skills and apply them to what you do.” John Veira, Director of Sustainability at Ford, offers his take on intelligence.

In his role, Veira is charged with taking his skill set and looking at the strategies and, in particular, the products that the company has coming out and applying input to them so that not only do they provide great value to the customer and make money for the company, but from an environmental standpoint, they are as environmentally friendly as possible.

As his commentary shapes up, it almost presents as a guide to life. You begin with raw aptitude, but where you go from there depends, first, on what you choose to do with it, such as nurturing and developing the mind, but with a keen sense of responsibility as your guide. He continues, regarding how intuition plays into his role: “In coming up with strategies, there’s not always textbook definitions of how you want to integrate concepts into that strategy, it has to feel right. Are you doing the right thing? As we’re producing the strategies for our future products, is there an element that we’re doing the right thing in producing those products?”

His insightful take on intuition lends to the idea that each person is different, and consequently, each path is different, but does your intuition tell you the path you’re on is right? What happens if your chosen path produces undesirable results or if tried and true ways are no longer fruitful or relevant?

Veira’s professional role loosely touches on this concept, too: “Transformation in my job is a big deal. I believe that all successful companies moving forward have to do more than just produce something. We need to be transformational in terms of not doing things the traditional way that no longer works, but doing things a new way, like now being environmentally conscious.”

The amount of conceptualization and planning that goes into Viera’s role is apparent, and so it is with life. But those activities should always be a means to some ultimate manifestation tomorrow, which gives you a road map for today: One of our main roles is to look in our crystal ball and say, ‘what are the types of products that future generations will need?’ We understand what that is or at least have visions of what that should be and we put together a strategy. It then becomes important for us to back up and see what we should be doing now, in order to deliver the manifestation of what we want in the future.

Veira’s passion for what he does is apparent – and so are the parallels to life.

Although William Malcolm creates and designs classic clothing for men his sensibilities run

much deeper than just the garments they don. The dapper designer explains that a suit is

a universal symbol of style as well as a manifestation of a man’s inner self and his sense of

worth. His healthy respect for traditional business wear coupled with his willingness to add

a contemporary flare to the mix, has men of all ages clamoring to his shop for one of his

signature designer pieces. “I believe that clothing can cause transformation. Just look at me,

prior to launching my line I was in financial services, but this was my calling

and God gave me a gift,” espouses the designer.

The adage that clothes “don’t make the man” was never more appropriately applied than

in the case of Malcolm and his approach to transforming certain male behaviors. Along

with creating exquisite clothing Malcolm is heavily committed to cultivating superior men.

“I believe that transformation is through and through,” he says in reference to his work

with young men at risk. Malcolm established The Soup Project soup to assist young men

between the ages from 18- 22 mature into productive members of the African American

community. “I insist that before I and [others] mentor to these young men, we talk about

our lives and some of the mistakes that we made. We talk about the struggles we’ve gone

through so that they can [transcend] where they right now. They need to know that they

can transform into being entrepreneurs businessman, doctors, lawyers and sports figures.

Above all they need to see that they can become what they want to be.”

Malcolm’s across the board appeal to consumers of diverse cultural backgrounds is buoyed

by his solid work ethic. The highly respected style expert is known throughout the clothing

industry for uncompromising quality and his acute attention to detail. Malcolm contends

that personal magnetism is a key component in a man’s ability to succeed. “One of the

things that we need to do is surround ourselves with the right group of people. It is of the

utmost importance that we make the right connections and attract positive associations. I

like to use the analogy of an eagle. An eagle soars high above other birds, so if you think of

yourself as an eagle and your flying in a flock of pigeons, you are obviously flying to low.”

Putting the proverbial “best foot forward” is what Harvard scholar Omar Wasow has learned to do best. Now in his fifth year of actively pursuing of his dream of earning a Ph.D from the prestigious university, the co-founder of black planet.com is harnessing his intellectual energy to cultivate his own fields personally and professionally. The noted internet technology specialist’s formula for excelling as an African American male in the world of academia is a potent mixture of intellectual disciplines and cultural discourse. “You know, intelligence is one of these things where you can feel like you’re chosen at one point in your life and then you are choking at another point. ... I come from a family of educators and basically everyone in my family was some sort of teacher or professor,” Wasow begins. admitting that he initially resisted joining the world of high achievers, opting instead to avoid the pressures associated with ambition and expectation.

“Intelligence can sort of be this double edged sword. What’s really allowed me to thrive was the revelation that intelligence is not just about what you’re born with, it’s about what you do and the hard work you put in. It’s about developing mastery over time, by practicing again and again at the tasks and the skills you need to succeed. I think in sum, the transition has allowed me to go from kind of a kid to a middle aged, but successful student [who] realizes that it’s not just about being born with a gift, its really about intelligence coming from effort,” he continues.

The Kenyan born Wasow, who helped establish the Brooklyn Excelsior Charter School is devoted to nurturing the minds and intellects of younger African Americans. He is deeply involved with recruiting African Americans from all social and economic backgrounds to participate in doctoral programs in a broad range of disciplines. “I think one of the things about being black in this era is that’s there’s so much variety within the black community. There’s a writer, Trey Ellis, who talked about the new black aesthetic in the 90s and how once upon a time, pretty much everybody in the community came from a pretty narrow set of experiences. You know, we are the post civil rights generation, there’s been this sort of like marvelous flourishing of experiences,” says Wasow who left his lucrative blackplanet.com underpinning to return to school. “I knew in my heart of hearts what I was doing and I really needed some new challenges, so it was kind of following that passion and that dream to walk away from that good life to one that’s been better for me... And there are other transformations that still await,” he concludes ominously.

her artistic capital and her mentorship of

offerings, but for 42 years Donald Lee has been immersed in his transformation into

Haki Mahdubuti. He is at the helm of the longest running, most established and most

outstanding African American publishing house in the United States. Third World Press

holds a revered and enviable collection of the works of Gwendolyn Brooks, the first

African American to receive a Pulitzer Prize for poetry. Why would such a poet who could

When you first check out the newly designed Ford Taurus, the first thing that catches your

eye is the makeover. As you make your way around the vehicle, more impressive features are

revealed—like its athletic shape, the Taurus’ sharp new profile, and its striking definition.

To add to that, the powerdome hood, bold new projector beam halogen headlamps, recessed

parking lamps and a sleeker three-bar grille, all mark significant improvements.

Take a look inside, and you’ll notice that the roof is lower … to preserve headroom, the

seats are lowered too. On the dash, the instrument panel showcases a plethora of blue lit

gauges and small black buttons, all cleverly placed to display the seamless, classy design and

the engineers’ craftsmanship.

An impressive set of cutting-edge features come standard on the 2010 Taurus offering

both convenience and safety. There’s the Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Warning,

Intelligent Access with Push Button Start, Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic

Alert and Ford SYNC with voice-activated navigation to control your cell phone or iPod.

Once the feast of mechanical changes is digested, make room for dessert. New features

for 2010 are the Easy Fuel capless refueling, the SecuriCode keypad for keyless entry (SEL,

Limited and SHO), headlamps with autolamps, the MyKey parental control program to

restrict the car’s speed to 80 mph for the inexperienced driver, a manual tilt/telescoping

steering wheel; and available add-ons include high intensity, ambient lighting for dark roads, a

10-speaker premium audio sound system, heated/cooled front seats, second row heated seats,

and multi-contour seats (for both driver and passenger to reduce fatigue, while integrating a

six-way lumbar support and a rolling pattern massage).

Front-wheel drive is available on the SE, SEL and Limited Edition trim levels, and all-wheel

drive (AWD) is offered on the latter two. All of the models come equipped with the Duratec

263-hp 3.5 liter V6 engine and a 6-speed automatic transmission. With the exception of

the SE, all trim levels offer the sportier driving options, the

SelectShift transmission offers manual shift control and

downshifting rev-matching capability. The high-performance

SHO (Super High Output) has the brand’s signature

Eco-Boost turbocharged 365-hp 3.5 liter engine, a 6-speed

automatic transmission and AWD, which jolts like a dose of

caffeine for the unsuspecting driver.

Standard equipment, not mentioned previously, on the SE includes 17” alloy wheels,

automatic headlights, all power accessories, a 60/40 split folding rear set, steering wheel audio

controls and a six speaker stereo system and CD/MP3 player. The SEL adds 18” wheels,

heated side mirrors, automatic climate control, satellite radio and an auto-dimming rearview

mirror.

Other upgrades available on specific trim levels include 19” alloy wheels, rear parking

sensors, leather upholstery, a 12-speaker Sony branded premium audio system and Sirius

Travel Link.

The sporty SHO adds a glossy black dash trim, xenon headlamps, upgraded leather trim, a

rear spoiler and dual chrome exhausts tips. An added bonus, the SHO can be equipped with

20” wheels, summer tires and a rearview camera.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gives the 2010 Taurus its highest accolade, a

Top Safety Pick rating, based on results of front-, side- and rear-impact crash tests.

{ TenaciTy }Men Among Us

There are exceptional men among us. These men took their young years, most against great odds, to prepare themselves to be the best in their chosen fields. Most of these men understood early how racism, white supremacy, worked and therefore resisted its traps and temptations and fortified their bodies, minds and spirits to rise against its evils. These men are in the tradition of Martin Delaney, W.E.B. DuBois, Paul Robeson, Malcolm X, John Coltrane, Arthur Ashe, Romare Bearden, Thurgood Marshall, A.G. Gaston, Marcus Garvey, Martin Luther King Jr. and others. Exceptional men known and unknown are many among us. Some of them are your fathers, grandfathers, uncles, teachers, ministers, coaches, friends and mentors. Being a man of African ancestry, a Black man in America, for most of us has been like pushing a plow in a dry field without a horse or mule. Most often, we have had to navigate life through the worldview, ideas, culture, systems and prejudices of others that have forced many of us into mediocrity, a blinding hopelessness and destroyed a good percentage of us. Being born Black and male, one’s development into Black manhood is often, in America, a dangerously paralyzing journey. Because of the dangers and the many traps set to steer Black boys away from being responsible men, it is critical that we understand that being a man is not just a function of biology. Just as important are culture, community values, current knowledge base, spiritual connectedness, positive self-concept, familial relationships, friendships, brotherhood, work and a work ethic, health, loveships, a winning and creative attitude toward life, intelligence and a willingness to learn, grow and change when necessary. Many Black men have missing moments in their lives and therefore must make a serious commitment to internal reflection and change. To that end, I suggest the following: 1. Have regular conversations with someone you trust, preferably an older man—father, grandfather, uncle or close male friend.

2. Participate in activities that build self-esteem, such as improving upon your education, part-time school in the evenings or on weekends, or a combination of both. If you have a high school education, consider community college; it’s probably the most democratic institution of higher education.3. Work in an area that gives you satisfaction and joy, bringing out the best in you.4. Nurture relationships that are understanding, living and special.5. Find a new environment—a new community that can aid and stimulate the growth potential in you.6. Maintain a frame of mind that insists that you are not a victim but an adult who is experiencing temporary problems that you can fix.7. Listen to your own life-affirming spirit and locate a spiritual and faith community that complements your needs.8. Exercise and eat properly. Keep your weight down and stay in shape. If you look good and feel good about yourself, you will radiate a positive aura.9. Study, study, study. The more you understand the intricacies of life—personal and public—the better you will be able to handle most things that come before you. 10. Consider making the public library a regular stop during your week. An active library card is a must for people seeking to build their minds with current and up to date information and knowledge. Most exceptional men understand and incorporate the lessons of history in their lives. We are here because strong men and women preceded us and created the paths we now tread upon. We are not without examples, contemporary and historical, that offer bright directions. Look closely at your immediate community. Don’t forget your own family. There are thousands of men who are all around us, waiting to be asked for help. Haki R. TENACITyIn spring 2009, nearly a year before I

departed ESPN as its premier NBA analyst – the greatest job I ever had -- I was watching television with my parents and two of my four sisters. We watched then-Senators Barack Obama, Hillary Rodham-Clinton, Joe Biden and others during a presidential debate. I watched my family as they nodded their heads in agreement, mimicking informed citizens knowledgeable of the issues at hand, knowing full well that no one was remotely aware of how significantly politics affected our daily lives.

Sadly, that included me as well.One can only wonder what that says about

most of us living in today’s society.It was on that day I experienced a

transformation. I made a personal and private pledge that ignorance was no longer an option and its eradication would take effect immediately in my life. For those who would have this to say, “Way to go, Stephen A.! That’s the way to handle your business,” I’d ask them to pause for a moment and refrain from giving credit.

Their praise implies that I had a choice. To me, none existed.

It was a necessity back then.It still is now.Ignorance is not bliss, after all. Not now.

Too much damage has been done. There’s a reason Negro slaves literally sacrificed their lives for our right to learn to read and write.

They knew intelligence could not only change lives, it could change a culture and a generation.

To be real and honest, the mission of change

isn’t complete yet. In fact, especially because we’re now a nation with a Black president, one could argue that we’ve actually taken a step backward, not forward.

Few of us could have anticipated the backlash of an Obama presidency and whether White America would say one of two things: “A Black man has been voted into office as the leader of the free world, so don’t come to us about racism anymore;” or “If young Black males could just be like Obama, carry themselves like Obama, educate themselves like Obama, they wouldn’t have to worry about racism at all.”

Sure, it’s sad there are some people who feel that way. But its worse that Black America never saw the shift to racial absolution coming.

Are the lives of Black Americans better today? Take into consideration statistics from October 2009 when unemployment was at 10.2% nationwide, 15.6% in the Black community and nearly 30% among young Black males.

Now ask that question again.Perhaps, even better, it’s time for Black

America to ask what role we’ve played in our own state of ignorance. There are libraries and bookstores everywhere. How many of us visit them? How many of us take the time to read?

We’ve got a two-party political system where politicians who are filled with strife spew rhetoric from both sides of the aisle, yet stand in unison when it comes to chasing the almighty dollar.

Somehow one party has gotten away with ostracizing the other from the Black community – while Blacks are oblivious to the

detriment to our own community.This is not a call, by any stretch, to

encourage anybody to abandon one party for another. Moreover, it’s a call for Black America to educate itself; to wake up and recognize that by being transparent in our support for one party and our disdain for another, we ultimately disenfranchise ourselves.

After all, if one party has our vote in the bag while the other simply ignores us because they know we’re not going to vote for them anyway, who’s really out there working on behalf of a community that’s one-sided?

Who’s really representing us when it comes to job creation? Healthcare? Education? Who’s genuinely fearful of the issues that arise when the needs of the Black community aren’t serviced?

This is our opportunity to allow our pursuit of real education to begin. We must recognize that the people who are allowed to enact legislation should be forced to actually work for our vote. This will provide accountability to a community largely manipulated and ignored since the civil rights movement. Only then will real education begin.

Suddenly, instead of scoffing at fiscally conservative Republicans who we’ve been led to believe are against us, we’ll aim our ire at moderate Democrats holding the nation’s healthcare bill hostage so they can procure funding for their individual states in pursuit of re-election. Instead of looking through rose-colored glasses at everything our Black president does, we’ll actually address real issues and disagree without being disagreeable.

Maybe, just maybe, instead of picking up either Newsweek, Time magazine, The

Wall Street Journal, The New York Times or The Washington Post, we’ll read all of them. We’ll compare and dissect news and opinions to grasp some semblance of the truth. Any educated person knows that approach is better than depending on so-called leaders to do it for us. Particularly the ones already bought and paid for.

From FDR to JFK, LBJ to Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan and beyond, it’s cool to recognize the games being played on Capitol Hill. That is, right up until the moment we realize all of the jokes are on us.

Then the fun is over. Merely talking about basketball and other

sports doesn’t scratch the itch. When all is said and done -- whether working part-time or full-time, renting or owning a home – no one is spared.

We all pay taxes. We all answer to the overseer of the system we live in. We’re accountable to unknown authorities and schemes.

Doubt it? Then you haven’t asked yourself how a bunch of folks on Wall Street cost you your job or why they’ll end up costing you more money when a tax increase comes down the pipe.

Maybe most folks are happy not asking those questions. Ignorance does have its moments of bliss. But when has ignorance ever had its benefits? How much has it cost our community?

If you haven’t asked yourself that question before, maybe it’s time you do.

It’s never too late to get educated, unless you feel you already are.

Then you’re a lost cause anyway.

The Reverend Al Sharpton has captivated the American public for decades. First as a fiery voice from the pulpit, then as an advocate for justice, an outspoken activist, zealous defender of the down trodden, and more recently as a formidable political contender. But the stylish pastor has always been a fierce and unapologetic staff bearer for righting wrongs and demanding equality for the masses of disenfranchised minorities. His many incarnations have inevitably lead him to the plateau of iconic identity.

Sharpton’s indeminable fighting spirit eminates from his upbringing. His razor sharp wit and enviable connection with something other worldly compel the victims and witnesses to racial inequities to increasingly look to Sharpton for answers or at least a redress of the issues. The more pressing or oppressing are met with a swiftness and astonishing precision under Sharpton’s able leadership. He embraces challenge and that is the stick he wields in effecting what is essentially a paradigm shift. He is force for world change.

His long and passionate debate is marked not only for its staying power, but for its message well. His sharp toungue, quick wit and he manges to stay in step with the times. It’s a mixture of that down home mother wit style and street savvy, but always with a spritual undertone or overtone. he’sthe type pf mad that the adgae if he gets into fight with a bear,pray for the bear.

His confident comportment conveys an almost enviable confidence, the type that comes from deep faith and knowing the Word. Contrary to what many may think Sharpton’s push to uplft African Americanns and improve the quality of life is not so much a political agenda as it is a sprititual and heartfelt mission.

Critical of the right wing and although he is himself a man of the cloth he does not shirk has no qualms about coicing his disdain for for zealots but he is soldier working for the greater good and bringing his flock.

His approach and his Tactcailly he does not shirk or shy away from controversy and confrontation. He is a soldier for the cause of inalienable rights as the U.S. constitution states “under God” pressing on for systemmic change. Those words are the source of the minister’s strength and committment -- he takes “inalienable rights under God” to heart. His zest for life and quest to guarantee a standard of living for African Americans.

Sharpton is masterful in his use of the media, galvanizing special interests and deployment he established the media part of the National Network.
