Basics of probiotic health claimsIrene Cisma Díaz, Atlantia Food Trials

Applications for health claims on probiotics and other live-microorganisms have been submitted for evaluation to EFSA and no application has received a positive opinion. EFSA reviewed the reasons why in a meeting with IPA Europe in January of this year. It can be extracted from the meeting notes that health claims should only be authorised in the EU after a scientific assessment of the highest possible standard. General scientific guidance for stakeholders on health claim applications should answer the following questions:

Is the food or constituent characterised?Is the claimed effect based on the essentiality of a nutrient? Or is the claimed effect defined and is it a beneficial physiological effect, and can be measured in vivo in humans?Is a cause and effect relationship established between the consumption of the probiotics or constituent and the claimed effect?

The above questions should always be considered for the target population and under the proposed conditions of use (CoU). The scientific substantiation (positive outcome) requires a favourable outcome to all three questions. Pertinent human efficacy studies are hierarchy of evidence, particularly randomised double-blinded controlled studies. The major reason for unfavourable opinions related to microorganisms were: Insufficient characterisation of the food or constituent, insufficient characterisation of the claimed effect and lack of pertinent human studies.

The characterisation of microorganisms refers to the species identification, but the strain characterisation/typing is also needed, since effects are strain specific unless the contrary is demonstrated. New molecular tools (multilocus sequence typing, optical mapping, whole-genome sequencing) as well as several methods often are needed in combination.

International Probiotics Association: the Global Voice of Probiotics® work continues.By George Paraskevakos

IPA recently published market data for our industry which included global figures as well more targeted European numbers..

Amidst the worlds current state, we are still seeing growth in both the supplements and the food categories in a maturing fashion. This perspective from the retail level is opposite of what is transpiring in the new reality called e-commerce. Conservative numbers have shown an estimated global growth in the online channels of 13.5% in 2019. Projections have the online world to grow as high as 19% to 22% in the next year.

Along with this burgeoning channel for probiotic sales also comes a new set up of propensities and never seen before situations. A good example of this is probiotics entering markets and segments which have restrictive access, such as Europe and or China. We have seen probiotic products being sold online with on pack claims and probiotic wording penetrate Europe, and foreign non-registered products finding their way into China through this channel as well.

Coming back to the retail segment we are seeing interesting increases in new markets. From a region perspective, APAC is growing at double the rate of the global growth rate as is MEA. Top growth markets from a country perspective are UK, Malaysia, Vietnam, and China all in double digit growth rates.

The science and research also continues to grow in our world. IPA will be publishing an article regarding all the clinicals conducted in humans using probiotics, registered in two important clinical trial databases. Science continues to show how beneficial probiotics can be in various areas from general applications such as GI circumstances and immune supporting in helping to limit various infectious situations, to more specific outcomes such as brain gut and metabolic syndrome applications. The link which will bring all the worlds together is education. This is where IPA’s work continues to grow. Spreading the word on probiotic benefits through our committees by education, outreach, meeting with and supporting governments, presenting at conferences, publishing guidelines, webinars, social media and so much more as we continue to support and educate regarding our unique industry.

IPA will continue to think globally but work diligently at the regional level; by a country specific basis we will understand the different requirements, and then enter into dialogue, with the different government’s authorities to unify the industry.
