> Heart failure and congenital heart disease�Our consultant surgeons offer the full range ofsurgical procedures and have particular expertise incomplex cardiac surgery, including transplantation.Our cardiologists treat a wide range of cardiac diseasesusing both invasive and non-invasive procedures. RoyalBrompton has one of the largest adult congenital heart diseaseunits in the country, offering fetal, paediatric and adult services.

Valve repair or replacementExpertise: Expertise in valvular surgery includesaortic valve repair and replacement with a fullrange of prostheses (mechanical, biological,homografts and autografts).�Expertise in aorticvalve includes valve pressurisation and rossprocedures. Particular expertise in both simpleand complex repair of the mitral valve. Additional information: Valve replacementsundertaken for over 40 years, pioneeringtechniques are now standard. Ten cardiacsurgeons specializing in adult cardiac surgeryperform hundreds of valve replacements andrepairs annually, and have excellent success rates.

Surgical intervention to treat heart failureExpertise: Specialists in heart transplantationand implantable mechanical assist devices�(Left Ventricular Assist Devices - LVADS, or“artificial hearts”).Additional information: Over 1,200 transplantpatients attend regular check-ups. Revascularisation (Heart bypass surgery)Expertise: Full range of procedures includingon and off-pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafts(CABG) and robotically assisted keyhole surgery.Hybrid procedures carried out for multivesseldisease: keyhole surgery followed by stentingundertaken by cardiologists.Additional information: Over 1,000 heart-bypass operations performed in 2005/2006.High success rates for bypass surgery.

Coronary angioplasty and/or coronaryartery stenting (for the treatment ofnarrow or blocked arteries)Expertise: Expertise in single and multivesselangioplasty and stenting. Undertaken in sevenpurpose-built catheter laboratories.Additional information: Over 2,400 coronaryangioplasty procedures performed in2005/2006. Primary angioplasty service atHarefield Hospital has fastest "door toprocedure" rate in the country. UK's firstcoronary angioplasty took place at RoyalBrompton in 1980 and the First coronary stentwas implanted in 1988.

Electrophysiology and cardiac pacingExpertise: Electrophysiology studies performedto detect abnormalities of heart rhythm. Radiofrequency ablation to treat electricalmalfunctions of the heart through highpowered radio waves. Fitting of pacemakers andimplantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs).Additional information: Around 500electrophysiology procedures performed in2005/2006, more than any other Londonhospital trust. Over 1,200 admissions for cardiacpacing procedures.

Angiogram/cardiac catheterisation (todetect narrow or blocked arteries)Expertise: Advanced X-ray imaging, includingthree-dimensional investigation of arteries withbiplane angiographic equipment at bothhospitals.Additional information: Catheter laboratoriesamong the most advanced in Europe forinvestigative and invasive procedures. > Thoracic surgery�The Trust is a major centre for lung, chestand oesophageal cancers and non-malignantthoracic surgery, and is the leading providerof complex thoracic surgery in the UK. Ourmulti-disciplinary teams include surgeons,histopathologists, radiologists, specialistnurses, palliative care specialists andoncologists, allowing each patient to have a'consensus treatment plan' with immediateaccess to the best treatment available.

Cancers of the chestExpertise: Surgical treatment for lung,chest�and oesophageal cancers (and non-malignant thoracic surgery), includingcryosurgery. Specialists in complex thoracic surgery.Additional information: One of the largestchest surgery services in the UK – more than2,300 inpatients cared for each year. Complexsurgery for patients with 'inoperable' cancer.

> Paediatric services �Royal Brompton is an internationally recognised centre for the surgical treatment ofneonatal and infant congenital heart disease. Our paediatric work covers respiratorymedicine, cardiology, fetal cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. An extensive multi-disciplinary team supports the nursing and medical staff.

Babies and children are cared for in our specialist paediatric unit. This offers play andschoolrooms specially designed to minimise the unease children - and their parents –might feel when staying in a hospital. Our children's intensive care unit is also locatedhere, offering immediate accessibility 24 hours a day.�

In the recent national assessment of services for children we achieved an ‘excellent’ rating,and our fetal cardiology service has recently been expanded. We have accommodation forparents located in the floor above the children’s ward and in other parts of the hospital.

Fetal cardiologyExpertise: Largest UK fetal cardiology service withfive specialist fetal cardiologists. Prenatalultrasound scans from as early as 12 weeks.Prenatal intervention (e.g. to open heart valves)undertaken in limited number of cases. Additional information: Continuity of care frompregnancy to birth and beyond, with close links toobstetrics units. Trust specialists lecture worldwide onprenatal screening for heart disease. Specialists alsoinvolved in worldwide research projects.

Paediatric cardiac surgery and cardiologyExpertise: Full range of diagnostic and surgicalinterventions and cardiological catheterinterventions (including various types of 'holes inthe heart'). Diagnostic cardiac catheterisation.Paediatric intensive care unit for medical and post-operative care. Paediatric cardiac murmur clinic fordiagnosis and treatment. Additional information: Children cared for bydedicated paediatric nurses with support fromcardiac nurse specialists. Intensive care facilitiesThe Department of Critical Care andAnaesthesia provides expert anaesthetic andcritical care services to patients at bothhospitals. The two intensive care unitscomprise a total of 38 intensive care bedsand provide postoperative care forcardiothoracic patients, as well as care forpatients with congenital heart disease,cardiological compromise and severerespiratory disease. Our Paediatric IntensiveCare unit (PICU) has 20 critical care bedsequipped with the latest technology to carefor our younger patients. Visitors, usuallyfamily members, are encouraged to visit.

Expertise: Fully equipped state-of-the-artintensive care units, staffed 24 hours a day byour expert nursing and medical staff.Additional information: Expertise of these unitsis recognised throughout Europe. Patients withdifficult to manage acute respiratory failure andweaning problems referred from hospitals both inthe UK and abroad.

Imaging and diagnosticsInvestment in imaging technology hasrevolutionised the way cardiac patients areinvestigated. Both Royal Brompton andHarefield hospitals have invested indedicated cardiac CT and CMR scannerswhich have the capacity to diagnose earlycoronary heart disease. As a result, manypatients will now no longer need othermore invasive procedures.

Our on-site pathology (laboratory medicine),physiotherapy (rehabilitation and therapies),clinical psychology, dietetics and pharmacydepartments offer a broad spectrum ofdiagnostic, treatment and support services.

Expertise: Full range of imaging servicesincluding ultrasound, nuclear medicine, CTscans, and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR)and fluoroscopy.Additional information: 70% of the UK'sCardiovascular Magnetic Resonance imagingworkload (high definition scans of the heart) undertaken at the Trust. Two state-of-the-art 64 slice scanners used to assess coronary artery blockage non-invasively.

Inpatient accommodation

Our private patients benefit from comfortablesingle occupancy rooms with en-suitebathrooms. They come equipped with atelephone, room safe and television screeningdomestic and satellite channels. We are alsopleased to offer our patients a complimentarypack of toiletries for their stay with us. Aninterpreter is available should you need one. Acomplimentary newspaper is delivered dailyand a wide variety of overseas papers areavailable upon request.

Catering services

Our chefs offer a wide choice of cuisineexclusively for our private patients in ourdedicated kitchens. Patients can select fromour à la carte menu or from meals suitable fordiabetic, weight reducing, healthy eating,vegetarian, Asian, Halal and Kosher diets.

Food is a really important part of yourrecovery and we will work hard to meet yourindividual dietary needs. Our dieticians willorganise meals if you have special dietaryneeds as a result of your condition ortreatment and you can select your portionsize.

Much of our produce is organic and locallygrown. We will be pleased to source particularrequests from local providers when possible.

Outpatients

Outpatients can be assured of the mostattentive care at all times in the relaxingenvironment of the Royal BromptonOutpatients Clinic. Private outpatients are seenby our consultants in a well-appointedoutpatient suite comprising consulting rooms,treatment room, x-ray facilities, kitchen and arestful patient lounge. Our paediatricoutpatient rooms are equipped with adesignated play area and baby changingfacilities.

A nursing sister trained in cardiothoracic careis responsible for the daily management of theconsulting rooms and a dedicated privatepatient radiographer, support nurse and clinicalsupport worker are all based on site to provideadditional support.

At both hospitals our private patientadministration team can arrangeaccommodation within the hospital or provideinformation about a number of local hotelswithin a varied price range.

Visitors to Harefield Hospital's private patientcentre have the benefit of facilities at ParkwoodHouse, a small, friendly, hotel-style housewithin the hospital grounds offering single ordouble rooms at very reasonable rates.

Visiting hours for both adults and children areflexible; we only ask that visitors liaise with theappropriate nursing staff about the best timesto visit.

pricing policyOur pricing policy is based on the principle that it should be simple, open and fair. We believe ourprices, when compared to a great many comparable private institutions are very competitive.

If you have health insurance with a recognised UK company, we can, in most cases, arrange for youraccount to be settled directly by them.
