> Heart failure and congenital heart disease�Our consultant surgeons offer the full range ofsurgical procedures and have particular expertise incomplex cardiac surgery, including transplantation.Our cardiologists treat a wide range of cardiac diseasesusing both invasive and non-invasive procedures. RoyalBrompton has one of the largest adult congenital heart diseaseunits in the country, offering fetal, paediatric and adult services.

Valve repair or replacementExpertise: Expertise in valvular surgery includesaortic valve repair and replacement with a fullrange of prostheses (mechanical, biological,homografts and autografts).�Expertise in aorticvalve includes valve pressurisation and rossprocedures. > Paediatric services �Royal Brompton is an internationally recognised centre for the surgical treatment ofneonatal and infant congenital heart disease. Our paediatric work covers respiratorymedicine, cardiology, fetal cardiology and cardiothoracic surgery. An extensive multi-disciplinary team supports the nursing and medical staff.

Babies and children are cared for in our specialist paediatric unit. This offers play andschoolrooms specially designed to minimise the unease children - and their parents –might feel when staying in a hospital. Our children's intensive care unit is also locatedhere, offering immediate accessibility 24 hours a day.�

In the recent national assessment of services for children we achieved an ‘excellent’ rating,and our fetal cardiology service has recently been expanded. We have accommodation forparents located in the floor above the children’s ward and in other parts of the hospital.

Fetal cardiologyExpertise: Largest UK fetal cardiology service withfive specialist fetal cardiologists. Prenatalultrasound scans from as early as 12 weeks.Prenatal intervention (e.g. to open heart valves)undertaken in limited number of cases. Intensive care facilitiesThe Department of Critical Care andAnaesthesia provides expert anaesthetic andcritical care services to patients at bothhospitals. The two intensive care unitscomprise a total of 38 intensive care bedsand provide postoperative care forcardiothoracic patients, as well as care forpatients with congenital heart disease,cardiological compromise and severerespiratory disease. Our Paediatric IntensiveCare unit (PICU) has 20 critical care bedsequipped with the latest technology to carefor our younger patients. Visitors, usuallyfamily members, are encouraged to visit.

Expertise: Fully equipped state-of-the-artintensive care units, staffed 24 hours a day byour expert nursing and medical staff.Additional information: Expertise of these unitsis recognised throughout Europe. Patients withdifficult to manage acute respiratory failure andweaning problems referred from hospitals both inthe UK and abroad.

Imaging and diagnosticsInvestment in imaging technology hasrevolutionised the way cardiac patients areinvestigated. Both Royal Brompton andHarefield hospitals have invested indedicated cardiac CT and CMR scannerswhich have the capacity to diagnose earlycoronary heart disease. As a result, manypatients will now no longer need othermore invasive procedures.

Our on-site pathology (laboratory medicine),physiotherapy (rehabilitation and therapies),clinical psychology, dietetics and pharmacydepartments offer a broad spectrum ofdiagnostic, treatment and support services.

Expertise: Full range of imaging servicesincluding ultrasound, nuclear medicine, CTscans, and Cardiac Magnetic Resonance (CMR)and fluoroscopy.Additional information: 70% of the UK'sCardiovascular Magnetic Resonance imagingworkload (high definition scans of the heart) undertaken at the Trust. Two state-of-the-art 64 slice scanners used to assess coronary artery blockage non-invasively.

Inpatient accommodation

Our private patients benefit from comfortablesingle occupancy rooms with en-suitebathrooms. They come equipped with atelephone, room safe and television screeningdomestic and satellite channels. We are alsopleased to offer our patients a complimentarypack of toiletries for their stay with us. Aninterpreter is available should you need one. Acomplimentary newspaper is delivered dailyand a wide variety of overseas papers areavailable upon request.

Catering services

Our chefs offer a wide choice of cuisineexclusively for our private patients in ourdedicated kitchens. Patients can select fromour à la carte menu or from meals suitable fordiabetic, weight reducing, healthy eating,vegetarian, Asian, Halal and Kosher diets.

Food is a really important part of yourrecovery and we will work hard to meet yourindividual dietary needs. Our dieticians willorganise meals if you have special dietaryneeds as a result of your condition ortreatment and you can select your portionsize.

Much of our produce is organic and locallygrown. We will be pleased to source particularrequests from local providers when possible.

Outpatients

Outpatients can be assured of the mostattentive care at all times in the relaxingenvironment of the Royal BromptonOutpatients Clinic. Private outpatients are seenby our consultants in a well-appointedoutpatient suite comprising consulting rooms,treatment room, x-ray facilities, kitchen and arestful patient lounge. Our paediatricoutpatient rooms are equipped with adesignated play area and baby changingfacilities.

A nursing sister trained in cardiothoracic careis responsible for the daily management of theconsulting rooms and a dedicated privatepatient radiographer, support nurse and clinicalsupport worker are all based on site to provideadditional support.
