This coin was found in a garden in a town called

Denbigh in North Wales many years ago. We realised later

that it is part of a World War 1 medal. There is an

inscription around the edge of the medal:

M 353663 PTE J GOODWIN ASC

Can anyone shed any light on this please?

Not much is known about the medal recipient, thereare many possible leads but none that can be

corroborated as yet. What we do know is as follows:

The British War Medal, 1914-1920

The medal shown above is the British War Medal,

it is a campaign medal of the British Empire and

was awarded for service in World War 1.

The reverse shows St. George naked on horse-

back, armed with a short sword (an allegory of

the physical and mental strength which achieves

victory over Prussianism). The horse tramples on

the Prussian shield and the skull and cross-

bones. Just off-centre, near the right upper rim,

is the sun of Victory. The dates 1914 and 1918

appear in the left and right fields respectively. [1]

There are many qualification requirements for this medal and without detailed service records it

would be impossible to know which apply to Private Goodwin, however there is one essential

requirement which is that Private Goodwin must have left Britain whilst on service, it did not

matter whether he entered a theatre of war or not so long as he left British shores then he

qualified for this medal.

A search of WO 372 (British Army medal index cards 1914-1920) reveals that as well as

the Victory Medal found in the garden, Private John Goodwin was also the recipient of

the British War Medal and he has a Silver War Badge entry on list RASC/4419.

The Victory Medal, 1914-1919

The medal shown right is the Victory Medal, it isa campaign medal of the British Empire and was

awarded for service in World War 1.

The medal was issued to most of those who

were awarded the British War Medal- it was

never awarded singly.

To qualify for the Victory medal one had to be

mobilised in any service and have entered a

theatre of war between 5 August 1914 and 11

November 1918. [4]

A subsequent search of WO 329 (Silver War Badge Records) gives us John Goodwins service dates

The M prefix in front of his service number tells us that Private Goodwin served with a

mechanical transport unit within the ASC. Some transport elements of the ASC

originated with The Royal Engineers [6]

Also shown on his Silver War Badge record is his cause for discharge. It sates Sickness

392 xvi (Paragraph 392 of Kings Regulations 1912, sub paragraph xvi)

To summarise:

M/353663 Private John Goodwin joined the Army Service Corp (Motor Transport) on 3rd

March 1915, he served until 23rd April 1919 and was subsequently awarded the VictoryMedal and the British War Medal. The lack of a 1914-1915 Star and the award of Victory

Medal shows that he entered an unknown theatre of war somewhere between 1st January

1916 and 11th November 1918.

He was medically discharged under Kings Regulations no longer fit for war service

therefore pension records should exist however none have so far been found.

Unfortunately, the majority of WW1 service records were destroyed during a 1940 air raid,

fewer than 40% survived and quite a few of those are badly damaged by fire. Only 2% of

pension records survive.

An entry exists in the campaign medal roll in record series WO 329 list RASC/101B245

page 25259 however these records have not been digitised yet. An estimate for obtaining

a copy has been requested from the National Archives at Kew. It is unknown what further

information this may yield.
