Located in Donnarumma Hall 339. Textbook: NG Mankiw, Principles of Microeconomics, 7th ed., South-Western Cengage Learning (2014). Course Description: In this course, you will learn about fundamental concepts, theories and terminology in the study of microeconomics. The study of microeconomics is interested in understanding and analyzing the decision making processes of consumers and firms. In this course, you will learn in depth about the supply and demand model, elasticity, price controls and taxes, as well as production decisions of firms and consumption decisions of individuals. You will understand how firms maximize profits, how consumers balance their choices between what they want and what they can afford, and how the choices of firms and consumers come together to determine the price and quantity of goods and services produced in our economy. Learning Outcomes: By the end of this course you will be able to… Apply the concepts of microeconomics with graphs, calculations, and equations Comprehend and analyze the supply and demand model Understand how consumers make decisions on what and how much to buy Understand how firms make decisions on what and how much to producer Identify four different market structures Explain the how government policies may help or hurt market outcomes Grades: There will be three exams during the semester each contributing 15% to your final grade and one cumulative take-home final exam contributing to 25% of your final grade. Exams will reflect material discussed in class, readings from your textbook, and homework problem sets. Homework problem sets will account for 20% of your final grade. Attendance and class participation account for the final 10%. This grade includes completing relevant exercises in class that demonstrate your completion of assignments outside of class. All students are expected to attend every regularly scheduled class session. Unexcused absences will be reported to the appropriate academic dean. Graded Material Summary: Problem Sets: 20% Exams 1-3: 45% (15% each) Final Exam: 25% Participation (5%) and Attendance (5%): 10%
