Terminal construction was to involve earthwork problems relating to approach road~, a surface water storage lagoon and the main railway line for through traffic as well as the terminal area itself with its attendant landslips (Castle Hill and Cherry Garden Hill). The site investigation was particularly concerned with stability problems, snd the 2 landslip areas are discussed in detail. A trial cutting end drainage installation was made. Some compaction trials ware carried out on some spoil material (from t h e French end) to be used as fill.

The methods were compared for 2 lo~-atibrm in the flucrspar zone of the Northern Pennlne orefield, where the mineralized veins occur high in the Lower Carboniferous alternating series of sandstones and siltstones. All of the methods were successful. It is suggested that the VLF method be used for reconaissance with horizontal-loop as a follow-up snd resistivity measurements where more data on the geology of adjacent strata are required.
