A pioneering event at the outset, Horizons now stands out due to its longevity. Created for the first time in the summer of 2007, the

event is now celebrating its ninth birthday and preparing to see in its first decade in 2016.

the recipe for this growing success is down to various factors. The incomparable natural environment of the Massif du Sancy already provides a dazzling showcase for the concept. To this can be added a strong identity marked by a clearly defined artistic vision that is de-manding and yet ready to welcome innova-tions and daring proposals. The event, often cited as a reference, can be justly proud of its growing reputation.

Every year hundreds of artists from all over the world try their luck, with just a handful of winners. Their wide range of backgrounds – designers, visual artists, landscape designers, architects – contribute to the event’s eclectic nature. They live through an extraordinary experience here, meeting the challenge of creating a unique artwork in the heart of ma-jestic natural surroundings.

We are very lucky to have so many artists working in the region for over a month during the installation.

The local population is also involved in the project. Talks are held with the local children. Anyone wishing to see the artists at work is welcome. This is a way of building rela-tionships naturally.

the public occupies a special place in the heart of the event. They are invited to interact by taking part in a wide variety of activities car-ried out jointly on the website and the social networks: photo competitions, the public’s vote for their favourite artwork, etc.

Horizons promises yet more big surprises and fully intends to carry the colours of the Massif du Sancy around the world with pride!

Alessandro Lupi has a special predilection for light, which he uses to play with co-lours and to challenge people’s percep-tion of space and time. His works are designed specifically for their settings, interacting with the surrounding envi-ronment to providing a startling, sensory experience.

Prélong park Murol

Located in the centre of Murol village, below the castle, the Prélong park is packed with myriad species of trees and flowers to dis-cover during a documented, colourful and sweet-scented walk. A French-style garden contrasts with the apparent freedom of the English-style park and shelters a superb rose garden. The Murol School artists mu-seum lies on the edge of the park.

FrAGMeNts De rÉALitÉ

F ragments de réalité recreates a natural phenome-non artificially. A brilliant ray of sunshine glitters under the thick foliage of the trees. On approa-

ching, you can clearly see that it is in fact an illusion: a thousand small round mirrors swaying in the wind reflecting the light of day. The artwork follows natural rhythms. It reflects light blindingly brightly when the sun is at its highest point, gradually softening as night falls.

Set in a forest, this artwork creates an intimate rela-tionship with the observer who is immersed in a dreamlike universe. Fragments de réalité fits per-fectly into this wood, existing solely through the sur-rounding nature that it reflects, the wind that makes it shimmer and flicker, the light that diffracts through it.

From its 8-m high summit, this cone sends a shadow onto the ground in the shape of an oval measuring 6 m in diameter. Getting closer to the artwork, the visitor comes up against these dizzying dimensions and takes in the different perspectives, thus giving them a new vision of the space. Slowly, they are lulled by the poetry radiated by the flashes of light and the swaying of the mirrors in the wind.

T he Time Maker’s artwork stands proud on the top of the rock, a bluish-coloured castle that reaches up to the sky. A stained wood sculpture

that stands at over 7 m in height, it makes you want to go in and sit down to savour a dreamlike moment where time seems to be suspended.

Entitled J’ai rêvé d’un château, the artwork is built around a wooden bench that could be a remnant of a dismantled 14th century castle. According to legend, the inhabitants destroyed Roche Vendeix castle to ensure that the thief who had taken possession of the place, and then plundered the surrounding area, was never able to set foot there again.

A recurring theme in the realms of the imagination, the castle is a projected object often linked to childhood. Often forming the backdrop to magical stories, here, the Time Maker’s have imagined the castle on top of a rock so as to highlight the presence of the people that once lived on this volcanic peak. While the thief’s treasure would be forever hidden in the stream flowing at its foot, a golden sphere floats in the sculp-ture enclosing the greatest of treasures: memory.

After the Horizons event, the artwork will be ins-talled in the new Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Ar-chitecture in Clermont-Ferrand, initially used as a workshop, to mark its inauguration at the start of the 2015 school year.

Vendeix rockLa Bourboule

This volcanic outcrop was formed by a slow eruption materialised by huge basalt columns. The rock offers an outstanding panoramic view. In your mind’s eye, you can imagine the Medieval castle, of which nothing rests today, perched on this rocky outcrop.

F loating on the water, the artwork Les rameurs perpétuels is in continuous motion. This vessel, made from wood sourced at a sawmill in the Puy-

de-Dôme and collected locally, is 12 m long and built to mirror the proportions of a racing rowboat. Above water, pairs of oars work in harmony moving through the air with either large, rapid horizontal movements or slow vertical movements that recall the synchro-nized motion of a man rowing the boat.

And yet, the human figure is only suggested here. Like a watermill, the drive wheels are powered by the flow of water, setting the five oars in motion. A sixth oar symbolizes the coxwain, who usually sets the pace for the crew. However, the artwork’s persistent im-mobility reflects the artist‘s desire to poke fun at the whole enterprise, thus creating an absurd situation. All this because, in spite of the energy spent to no avail, the artist’s real intention is to draw the visitor into the magic of the performance of this individual mechanical object.

The artwork’s reflection on the water embellishes the scene, while the aimless vessel brings to mind the eternal punishment of Sisyphus condemned to cea-selessly push his rock up a mountain, down which it inevitably rolls.

The Entraigues falls form an impressive 18-m high waterfall, hidden deep within a small valley and surrounded by a luxu-rious profusion of ferns and beech trees. The dark volcanic rocks contrast with the bright greens of the surrounding plant life. The whole gives this site a rather wild feel.

Francis Benincà French

Sculptor, 42 years old. Lives and works in Guern (Morbihan).

The work of sculptor Francis Benincà takes its inspiration from curves, modelled on nature’s way of using curves to gain in strength. He uses steel wires to produce streamlined shapes in open spaces, always seeking to create a dialogue with the surrounding environment.

Artière gorges Ceyrat, outside the Sancy area

An artwork has been produced for the Chaîne des Puys - Limagne Fault area to mark its candidacy as a potential UNES-CO World Heritage Site. Art is used to enhance a little-known area that never-theless is remarkable for its geology; the Artière gorges, carved out of the granitic rock by this river; a fresh-air walk among a host of natural curiosities.

W hen they enter a forest, visitors may have a surprising chance encounter in the moun-tains of the Auvergne: Octopus Montanus [the

mountain octopus]! This giant octopus spreads itself over the surrounding area, its tentacles wrapping around tree trunks, sinking into the earth, encircling branches. Made entirely of curved steel rods that are welded together, the artwork covers an area nearly 6 m high and over 20 m wide. Humans appear very small faced with this creature that seems bent on reasserting its rights.

There is a tale being told here, relating the mountain’s history should it have been covered by an ocean some 640 million years ago. Like a fossil, this aqua-tic animal, Octopus Montanus, plays witness to this imagined land by marking the place’s fictional history with its imposing presence.

Visitors are encouraged to engage directly with the artwork through its amusing shape and impressive size. With this sculpture, Francis Benincà is trying to get people to think about the fleeting nature of human existence compared against an ancestral nature, which he nevertheless tries to tame unceasingly.

This artwork is presented as part of the Chaîne des Puys – Limagne Fault candidacy for recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Alice & David Bertizzolo French

HEC Montreal (Canada) and La Sorbonne University.

David Bertizzolo: visual artist and architect, 37 years old. Lives in Espinasses (Hautes-Alpes).

Grenoble National School of Architecture.

The work of Alice and David Bertizzolo is characterized by the use of repetitive geometric shapes that create strange and unexpected structures that interplay with the surrounding environment. They are made from industrial materials and yet give the illusion of being natural objects, disconcerting our powers of observation and transcending reality.

Field close to the Vanzoux mountain Saint-Victor-la-Rivière

There is an air of utter peacefulness in this place, you get the impression that you are at the end of the world! Nature is varied and all-pervading; it invites the visitor to rest and reflect.

O nce upon a time, there was a giant who lived in the Sancy mountains. Gentigigan loved flowers but could not smell them without crushing the

delicate petals under his weight. It was a young shepherd who found the solution: he captured the scent in a bottle of milk that he then offered the giant. This tale is the starting point of their artwork: the ar-tists install a series of giant dandelions in a field.

From far away, these shapes recall those of an urban landscape: streetlights appear to be standing right in the middle of a field. On approaching, these 5-m high sculptures reveal their actual form. Stuck on wooden poles, the spheres are made of recycled milk bottles that form the “Pappus” or dandelion clocks. As the night falls, solar-powered projectors illuminate the field whenever the sensors detect a movement. This may be that of nocturnal visitors or of the cows that live in this field. Unique moments are born of this en-counter between the creatures that produce the milk and these Pappus lactés!

This new landscape made up of around thirty giant flowers invites visitors to take a magical walk, while creating a poetic disarticulation within the natural en-vironment.

PeUPLADe

Delphine Pouillé French

Visual artist, 35 years old. Lives and works in Pantin (Seine-Saint-Denis).

Brittany School of European Art, Rennes.

Delphine Pouillé’s work is based around bo-dies seen through objects made of fabric and foam. These sculptures are staged to create vibrant, intriguing organic en-vironments that question the relationship confronting artificial and natural objects, from the replica set against the original and, going beyond, against identity itself.

Between stones and plants Chastreix

The walk starts in the heart of a remarkable, wide-open landscape bordering the Na-ture Reserve. After crossing a small woo-den bridge, visitors enter a more intimate natural setting. At the top of a hill, the site opens up to reveal a multi-level space filled with stones and a luxurious flora. Occasionally, the stones and the trees even meld together… This is a little gem of a site.

H anging down from the trees, rising up from the ground, suspended in the air, Delphine Pouillé’s sculptures spread across the site and its sur-

roundings. Fabric membranes filled with expanding foam, they colonize any nature they encounter. Made using a single template, they nevertheless all have their own individual character. Puffed up in various positions or orientations, some are dismembered before being reassembled, sometimes only partial-ly, while others are branched and elongated or still others may have had new materials (wood, natural or manufactured items, rope, etc.) added on to them.

This hybrid assembly of ten or so sculptures covers the site and forms an enigmatic Peuplade. These vibrant shapes mimic nature, their extremities resemble roots or tree branches, creating a magical atmosphere in which we can easily imagine seeing small, myste-rious beings. And, even though they fit in perfectly as extensions of landscape features, it is clear that they are also growing independently and appear to be invading the area.

Anabelle Soriano French

Visual artist, 34 years old. Lives and works in Paris.

French National School of Fine Arts in Paris.

Anabelle Soriano’s work deals with how we see things. Through her passion for out-door spaces, whether real or imaginary, this climbing enthusiast plays with the notions of balance, weight and orienta-tion. Having first trained as an architect before deciding to become an artist, Anabelle Soriano likes to experiments with the plasticity and poetry of space through her sculptures, installations or performances.

Along the GR30, somewhere between Guéry lake and the Puy Gros Le Mont-Dore

This is not a specific area but a section of the GR30 marked by a succession of outstanding viewpoints. The walking is going to be pretty athletic! The walk starts from the banks of Guéry lake and finishes at the summit of the Puy Gros, which overlooks the Mont-Dore valley.

C airns are heaps of stones found on hills, bogs or mountain summits to mark out territory. Built by people using the means available to them, this

small monument represents a marker for the people who built it or for people coming after. Anabelle So-riano marks out the route leading to the Puy using Relais, 1.70 m-high sculptures made with stones collected on-site and combined with resin elements produced in the artist’s studio.

Each Relais is carved out, partly to evoke the natural erosion of the rock, and also to give observers an original perspective. We can look through the hole, listen to the amplified sounds, thus altering our per-ception. These elements steer a path through space that is at once functional and visually artistic due to the standalone nature of the sculptures.

The ten or so structures highlight the balance between the assembled elements, a recurrent theme in the ar-tist’s work. But, mostly, they make walkers want to add their own stone to the structure, as the custom suggests. This, however, raises a dilemma for walk-ers: should they continue to build the cairn or should they leave the structure alone out of a respect for art?

Tiziana Bertoncini Italian

Musician and visual artist, 45 years old. Lives and works in Vienna (Austria).

Rinaldo Franci Higher School of Music Studies, Sienna (Italy) & Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara (Italy).

Tiziana Bertoncini’s dual training in music, with the violin, and in painting, gives her an original and cross-cutting vision of the art world. Her artworks combine an elec-tro-acoustic aspect that calls for the public to join in. Their contextual aspect means these artworks use the surrounding envi-ronment as a fully integral component.

Near the Chiloza waterfalls Besse

The Chiloza waterfalls follow one after the other on the Couze Pavin, a torrent ema-nating from the Pavin lake. The river bed is dotted with “oules” or giant potholes that have been carved out of the lava. The water flows between moss and ferns in a wooded environment that forms a se-ries of gorges. The plant life is luxuriant and the constant bubbling sound of water against a backdrop of birdsong makes this place a true haven of peace.

S infonia invisible #2 [the invisible symphony] by Tiziana Bertoncini consists of a series of 20 Plexiglas tubes hanging among the trees. Of va-

rying lengths and diameters, the tubes act as a go-between used to listen to the sounds made by nature or humans in the surrounding environment (water, wind, voices, engines, and so on). The sounds pe-netrate each tube differently, depending on their size and inclination. The way in which they are arranged in the trees allows visitors to place themselves opposite two tubes at the same time, with one at each ear.

Visually, the artwork is a delicate and understated pre-sence within the site, with visitors being attracted from afar by the subtle glinting of the material. In this cramped space, the artwork’s minimalist aspect in-vites observers to create an intimate relationship with it, listening to their own private symphony that varies depending on which tubes they decide to bring to their ear melded with their own sound perception.

The tubes thus become mediums that create interplay between nature and the individual, heightening the per-ception of sound and space. In addition to the artwork, the artist offers visitors a way of listening attentively to nature that changes their very perception of space, reinforcing the visible and revealing the invisible.

Pré de l’homme Saint-Nectaire

This hillside field lies at an altitude of 900 m and offers a spectacular panoramic view, firstly over the town of Saint-Nectaire and its Romanesque church, and then over the Medieval castle of Murol, and finally over the peaks of the Sancy, visible on the horizon.

P erched on their rocky outcrop, the two Temporary ruins pavilions illustrate the opposition between nature and contemporary culture. Spaces are

built using layered polycarbonate sheets, their orga-nic form verging on the intangible.

Their transparency blurs the line between nature and artifice, between indoors and outdoors. The polycar-bonate acts as a filter, nature being viewed in a hazy and fragmented fashion once inside the structure. In-cidentally, our view is guided by the artists who have drilled openings that direct our gaze and create gra-dients and depths of field through the use of optical effects.

The artwork plays on the mimicry between architec-ture and the environment, with one blending into the other. It changes throughout the day with the light, and is illuminated by a solar lighting system at night. By juxtaposing the material’s technicality against na-ture’s spontaneity, it questions our world today des-pite its apparent harmony.

This artwork can be seen at night.

Gayme lake Picherande

Gayme lake was formed by changes in the glacial paleo landscapes. In the heart of a wood, it is used for fishing and leisure activities and offers many family-friendly facilities. The tour of the lake offers a very pleasant walk.

W alden Raft is a floating water-going cabin ins-talled on the lake. Built of wood and Plexiglas, it is open to the outside from certain positions.

Visitors entering the cabin become the captain: they navigate by moving a capstan that has some rope wound around it. The raft then moves along a taut cable.

The cabin provides an endless source of inspiration. A model of a primitive habitat, it represents a child-hood dream or an utopian ideal of free living. The artwork refers here to the experience of the author Henry David Thoreau described in Walden; or, Life in the Woods. The embarkation is built to the same proportions.

This sculpture becomes an intermediate cabin; the ob-server on the lake tests a new way of understanding the landscape even as they themselves are observed by those standing on the shore. Inside the cabin, a sound track of diverse noises and readings of texts, including quotes from Thoreau, is played in a distant, random manner. The observer’s sight and hearing are both brought into play, completing their total immer-sion in this floating experience.

Artist, photographer, director, 56 years old. Lives and works in Paris.

With the benefit of a diverse professional and artistic background, Roland Cros has built a narrative approach around his pro-ductions, whether photographic, docu-mentary or visual art. Recently, his efforts have been focused on developing the three-dimensional aspect of his works, questioning the role people play in their environment.

Puy de ChambourguetSuper-Besse

The Puy de Chambourguet culminates at an altitude of 1,520 m. As seen from the Super-Besse resort, its stands out in the landscape, proud and majestic. At the top, there are superb views over the Massif du Sancy. In the summer, the Puy and its crater are carpeted with flowers, covered with yellow gentians, carnations, fuchsias and other high-altitude flowers.

A full-scale replica of an Airbus A318, i.e. 32 m in length, Zone de turbulences manifestement ag-gravées is a monumental piece of work in the

Sancy landscape. Not without a touch of humour, that encourages a certain distance, the title of the artwork refers to an alleged airplane crash, of which the scattered is the only remaining trace. The narra-tive is created in the imagination of the visitors, who walk around the artwork, looking for clues, trying to understand the reasons behind this fiction, with each person creating their own story.

The plane’s walls are made from wooden planks re-claimed from sawmills in the department with an in-tegrated programmed lighting system. When night falls, the sunlight stored during the day gradually il-luminates the remains piece-by-piece, slowly at first, and then gradually getting faster when a presence is detected nearby.

Through this highly expressive artwork, the artist is of-fering a parable, illustrating the perfect technical mas-tery achieved by civilisation at the dawn of the 21st century. In this way, he questions the limits bounding people within their environment: the technical and scientific progress made appears to carry within it the seeds of its own destruction, like Icarus burning his wings...

This artwork can be seen at night.
