MUSIC THEATER WORKS is a member of the Illinois Arts Alliance, League of Chicago Theatres, National Alliance for Musical Theatre, the Evanston and Wilmette Chambers of Commerce and Chicago’s North Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau.

A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTISTIC D IRECTOR

Welcome to CANDIDE, the first show of our 2017 season, a season that promises a wealth of variety. CANDIDE, renowned for its brilliant Leonard Bernstein score, presents challenges on all levels, not least of which are the meeting the virtuosic demands of its music, and finding a scenic concept that can embrace the ever-changing locales of its kaleidoscopic book.

Since its premiere in 1956, CANDIDE has undergone extensive reworking, as various writers have tried to create the best of all settings for one of the greatest scores ever written for Broadway. There are actually two versions now available for licensing; we have chosen the Royal National Theatre version from London, first performed in 1999. It made more sense for Music Theater Works; not only does it include more of Bernstein’s music than other versions, it also presents some witty newly-written lyrics from the original librettist Richard Wilbur, as well as from a key contributor to the 1974 Broadway revival, the one and only Stephen Sondheim.

Of course, every show has its own particular challenges—but few have more than CANDIDE. I would like to thank all my collaborative actors, new and returning, and give special thanks to my designers for bringing all their imagination and creativity to this piece. Enjoy CANDIDE!

Rudy HogenmillerArtistic Director

CANDIDE opened at the Martin Beck Theater in New York City on December 1, 1956 in a production directed by Tyrone Guthrie and starring Robert Rounseville,

Barbara Cook and Max Adrian. It was revived on Broadway in 1974 and 1997.

The revised Royal National Theatre version of CANDIDE premiered at the Olivier Theatre in London on April 13, 1999. John Caird directed, Mark Dorrell conducted,

and the production starred Daniel Evans, Alex Kelly and Simon Russell Beale.

This is Music Theater Works’ third production of CANDIDE. The first, in 1982, was directed by Philip A. Kraus, conducted by Barney Jones, and starred David Huff,

Elizabeth Gottlieb and William Wronski.

The second, in 2004, was directed by Lara Teeter, conducted by Lawrence Rapchak, and starred Will Reynolds, Jendi Tarde and James Rank.

Today’s Voltaire / Pangloss, Gary Alexander, played Maximillian.
