EXHIBITS

All of the layouts on show are fragile and are the fruits of many hours hard

work. Please be careful when viewing; unfortunately not all damage is done

by little hands!!

HAWTHORN DENE – N Gauge Stand 1

This N-gauge layout represents the North Eastern Region's Durham Coast mainline,

somewhere around Easington in the late steam/green diesel period. The old Hawthorn

Dene Colliery no longer winds coal. Its winding gear has been removed and the shafts

fitted with fans. The washery and screens are still in use, mainly preparing household

coal for merchants and for the nearby landsale yard. Waste is still sent to be tipped on the

beach, both by conveyor belt and aerial ropeway. Indeed "Get Carter" will be filmed in a

few years' time at Blackhall, eight miles to the South.

Colliery locos bring empties from the exchange sidings to the South for weighing and

taking onto the screens, while full wagons are removed from the screens, weighed, and

taken either to the exchange sidings or North to the Hawthorn complex. Meanwhile the

mainline sees a procession of expresses, local passenger, fitted goods and coal trains,

which seem not to disturb the inhabitants of the pigeon lofts on the bank.

Buildings are typical of the area. The underbridge is based on the one at Easington

Colliery - the different parapets are a result of a partial rebuild, possibly following a

derailment.

Control is DCC using NCE Powercabs. Some locos are fitted with sound.

FOREST GREEN MODEL RAILWAY – OO Gauge Stand 2

The original Forest Green was exhibited at Exeter Model Railway Exhibition in 2012. It

began life as Ray White's home based '00' layout and was adapted for the show. It ran

well and generally received positive reviews. This led us to build a completely new

version specifically with exhibitions in mind which can be viewed by visiting our

website.

New baseboards were built and track was laid to a similar plan with some operational

improvements. Subsequently the main effort has gone into the scenic effects and many

new buildings which are either scratch built or modified kits.

The setting is a former Midland route through South Gloucestershire in the early 60s so

several diesels are now appearing and the boundary change mean that both Midland and

Western Region motive power are in evidence. (I think this is called variety or progress

or sacrilege!!!)

Stock has been weathered and has some added details although further improvements,

particularly to couplings, will take place in the future. The majority of the signals work

and many buildings have lighting.

The Cotswolds location features Forest Green, a through station , near the junction with

the branch to Kemble. Traffic is mainly local with some through workings from

Gloucester and the North to Chippenham, Westbury and the South Coast.

4

DITCHFORD TREACLE MINE – O9 Gauge Stand 3

A very light hearted look at Narrow Gauge Industrial Railways. 'Treacle Ore' is

transported from the mine to the processing plant, barrels of treacle are moved

from the plant and shunted into sidings, then marshalled together to be taken

away into the big wide world. Look a little closer to find other amusing little cameos.

ASHBROOK DALE – OO Gauge Stand 4

This '00' gauge layout depicts the station, goods yard and stone loading areas of

Ashbrook Dale a fictitious terminus station on a single line branch of the LMS off the

main line to Manchester in Derbyshire.

The railway was instigated by the local quarry owners as a way of gaining more

markets for their stone, and the automated stone loading facilities are a feature of the

layout. With the coming of the railway the village of Ashbrook has thrived and the

farmers now have a dairy for the onward distribution of their dairy products and milk

The layout is set in the 1930's and reflects the LMS locos and rolling stock of this

period. Much of the stock is kit built and includes experimental diesel electric

locomotives that were trialled by the LMS at Derby. The working of the layout is with

the public in mind, so that there are varied movements with typical rolling stock of the

period.

All the buildings are typically L.M.S. style and are scratch built from plasticard, the

exception being the signal box which is a Churchill brass kit.

LOCH TAT – N Gauge Stand 5

Having visited Scotland on many occasions, this layout represents Adrian’s attempt to

protray the splendour of the scenery to be found in the Western Highlands. Although not

based on a specific location, Loch Tat is firmly based on the West Highland line that

was built by the North British Railway from Glasgow to Fort William and latterly on to

Mallaig. Until relatively recently, little money was spent on the rural railway system in

Scotland, so very little changed during the period from the 1970’s to the current date.

The layout can therefore be run to represent a number of eras.

Trains typical of the line can be seen winding their way through the station and across

the causeway, before entering the tunnel. Many of the buildings have been scratch built;

primarily using plasticard, to represent the prototypes found in the area.

QUESTA – On30 Gauge Stand 6

Based on American narrow gauge railways in Colorado/New Mexico, Questa is the end

of the line for a section of the Antonito & Taos railroad. It is 1952 and time is running

out for this line which survives on mineral shipments.

EVINGTON ST JOHN – OO Gauge Stand 10

Evington St John is based somewhere in rural East Anglia in the late '60s. A truncated

freight only branch, it serves a local coal yard and goods store. Stock and scenics are a

mixture of readily available items and kits all modified and weathered.

GLENMORE PARVA – OO Gauge Stand 11

It is a fictional location with no allegiance to any particular region or company, and a

time around the change from steam to diesel operation.

This is to suit members’ stock and interests, and is an end to end layout which is double

tracked into a ten lane fiddle yard.

This gives the opportunity to have passing trains, not always seen on an end to end

layout.

The terminus station "Glenmore Parva" has two main platforms with a central loco

release line and a bay platform for local service to "Shepshed". The station also has a

small goods yard and private line to a local industry area, which runs down under the

main lines to the rear of the layout. There is an operational turntable to enable locos to be

turned and make the return journey from the station to the fiddle yard.

It planned to run to a timetable to get consistent movements on the layout for the interest

of the operators and viewing public. It also has operating station and buffer lamps, with

an increasing number of operational signals and other features being added.

PENDLEBURY PARVA – N Gauge Stand 12

Our new N Gauge Club layout is somewhere in Middle England, conveniently situated in

that overlap between 3 or even 4 regions of British Railways. The station has an

extensive goods yard (sadly out of sight, the other side of the town) and there is an

aggregate crushing plant, served by a couple of sidings.

The branch line, with its steep gradient and lack of run-round facilities in the bay

platform, allows only push-pull and DMU working. But plenty of trains run through the

station – a spotter’s paradise!

UP N BACK – OO9 Gauge Stand 12a

The layout represents a preserved 1ft 11 1/2 inch gauge railway running on the track bed

of a former standard gauge line that linked the Iron Ore quarries on the northern extremes

of Rosedale, North Yorkshire Moors to the sidings at the top of Ingleby Bank. The

village of Uppin is half way along the line and sees many tourists during the summer; the

station hosts many attractions especially vehicle displays and rallies. Locomotives and

rolling stock are mainly kit-built with some r-t-r items; manufacturers include Parkside,

Eggerbahn, Jouef, and Roco. I must pay tribute to the late Ted Hobday, a dear friend,

without whose idea the layout wouldn't have come to fruition. A small memorial to him

can be found in a quiet corner of the layout. Pease ask any questions about the layout or

model railways in general. WE DON'T BITE!

5

WESTBROOK – N Gauge Stand 7

A fictitious Midlands industrial town on a busy cross country route, which is served by

local and long distance passenger services and is often used as a diversionary route by

west coast freight traffic, as well as serving industrial sites in the local area. These freight

services are often held in the loops outside the station to allow passenger services to pass.

There is a rail served terminal on part of the site of the old goods yard receiving regular

trip workings, and occasional block loads for onward distribution by road.

Finescale trackwork

Colour light signalling

Automatic uncoupling

Period modelled: Sectorisation. Late 1980s to early 1990s

ROLLESTON ON DOVE – EM Gauge Stand 8

Built to a scale of 4mm:1ft in EM gauge, recreating Rolleston-on-Dove, a station of the

North Staffordshire Railway Company, during its final summer of operation 1948; the

resulting model was featured in the Railway Modeller magazine, issues November 2007

and January 2008, and has been shown at events in Rolleston-on-Dove and exhibitions

throughout the Midlands.

The local passenger train between Burton upon Trent and Tutbury, affectionately known

as the "Tutbury Jinny" (see image opposite) gave its name to the nature trail that now

follows the route of the railway line between Rolleston-on-Dove and the neighbouring

village, Stretton.

Not content with an actual model, Clive also generated a virtual 3D model, the images

from it now feature on an information panel sited at the entrance to the site of the closed

station at Rolleston-on-Dove where platforms and some other features are still visible,

giving an added dimension to walking along the "Jinny Nature Trail".

SHELF STREET – OO Gauge Stand 9

Shelf Street is set in the late 70’s/early 80’s and represents some half forgotten sidings

close to a much larger yard. Track is Peco code 75 and control is DCC. Points are

electrofrog, controlled by wire rod and microswitches to change frog polarity. Stock is

largely RTR with a few kits, but all have been repainted/weathered to match the time

period. Motive Power is primarily Southern and the layout can be happily operated with

a couple of locos and a dozen or so wagons. A simple shunting layout: I hope it gives the

viewer an idea of one way of creating a layout in a small 6’ x 1’ space and limited

budget.
