Curriculum:[9modules/36–39hoursoflearning/4+days]

Day 1: Family Business Foundation

• Family Business: The first module will be big-picture focused – looking at strategic framing [Importance of Family Business to global economies], Tools to better understand them [3 circle model, genogram [participants will map their families], Recognizing common family business paradigms [Family First v. Business First / Hire for Values & Train for Skills v. Hire for Skills & Train for Values / Equal v. Fair];

• Communication: Using global best practices, Insights Discovery profiles, participants will learn to understand their chosen communication patterns and behaviours and the impact it creates on others. They will be categorized in study groups by communication behaviours for the purposes of the program. Together we will explore methods of effective communication with mixed teams to establish rapport. Group Social Event

Day 2: The Language of Family Business

• Every participant needs the fundamentals to understand the business and financial language common in family businesses. The morning will provide easily processed business and financial acumen. The afternoon will explore the concepts of trust in the family business and outline best practices to address trust erosion issues. Dr. James Grubman will be a guest lecturer on Health Capital in the Family. Time will also be provided in both Day 2 & 3 Evenings for Group Presentation work.

• Day 3 - Establishing Family Business Frameworks The third day will be focused on traditional family business frameworks including Accountability, Governance and Leadership. A full spectrum of possible types and reasons to broaden and change structures will be explored and interacted with as individuals determine best practices for their own family enterprises. Afternoon session will explore the significance of Innovation in Family Continuity. Evening will continue with Guest Family Guest Speakers from Longos & Andrew Peller Ltd, followed by Group presentation work.

• Day 4 – Exploring Family Business Futures The morning will be a lively discussion around Risk Management in Family Businesses and will address succession vulnerabilities with family guest speaker. A notable case study session will occur focusing on Entrepreneurship. Guest lecturers John Campion & Mitzi Perdue. Evening Session will include a reception with guest speakers.

• Day 5 – Group Presentations and Course Wrap – Up

The morning will provide each group the opportunity to present their group work and share their learning on a chosen topic. A course wrap-up will follow outlining the learning continuum within family business, followed by a social lunch to end the curriculum.

SPEAKER BIOGRAPHIES:

Susan Fulford, Family Continuity Advisor, Educator, Speaker, Mediator: Program Director

As Managing Director of Dynamic Legacy Inc, Ms. Fulford provides independent and objective advisory services for Family Offices & Business Families. She has deep experience in the legal, global business & wealth management industries. She focuses on family continuity utilizing global best practices. Creator of the professionalized curriculum Preparing the Next Generation and the 2017 FamilyShift, she founded the collaborative Institute of Family Enterprise Stewards. She holds an LL.B. from Osgoode Hall, Executive MBA from Ivey Business School and is a Family Enterprise Advisor and member of the Institute of Family Enterprise Advisors (IFEA). Recently she completed the Harvard University Negotiation Intensive Certificate to elevate outcomes for private client families. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and has appeared on BNN, contributed articles to various publications like Investment Executive, and presented to TIGER 21, YPO, CEO Global Network, CFA Institute Wealth Conference, and moderated panels at a number of events on family office matters. Dr. Jim Grubman, Author, Family Wealth Advisor, Educator, Thought Leader:

Jim has provided services to individuals, couples, and families for nearly 40 years, initially in the healthcare system and then in financial services as one of the first wealth psychologists. His work with clients at many levels of affluence - from the “millionaire next door” to The Forbes 400 - has earned him an international reputation as an experienced consultant to families. He draws on his knowledge in psychology, neuropsychology and family business,

Jim is the author of the widely-renowned Strangers in Paradise: How Families Adapt to Wealth Across Generations, an explanation of how individuals and families can adjust to wealth effectively over time. He is also co-author with Dennis Jaffe, PhD of Cross Cultures: How Global Families Negotiate Change Across Generations, extending the themes in Strangers in Paradise to ethnic cultures around the world. His work has been discussed in Malcolm Gladwell’s bestselling book, David and Goliath, and in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, CNBC, The Boston Globe, and other media. He has published widely in the Journal of Wealth Management, Journal of Financial Planning, Private Wealth Magazine, and other publications. Jim is a Fellow of the Purposeful Planning Institute and the Family Firm Institute. He has been a full member of the Boston Estate Planning Council and is one of very few psychologists in the 20,000-member international Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP). Jim has a master's degree from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Vermont. His practice, Family Wealth Consulting, is based in Massachusetts, USA. Mitzi Perdue, Author, Speaker, Family Legacy Advisor:

Mitzi Perdue is the daughter of one family business titan (her father founded the Sheraton Hotel Chain) and the widow of another, (her late husband was the family business poultry magnate, Frank Perdue), and she is also a businesswoman in her own right. She started the family wine grape business, now one of the larger suppliers of wine grapes in California. Mitzi likes nothing better than to share insider tips for successful family businesses. Her family of origin (the one that started the Sheraton Hotels) began with the family business, Henderson Estate Company, in 1890, and her Perdue family started in 1920 in the poultry business. These two families have a combined tradition of 222 years of staying together as a family. Mitzi is happy to share actionable advice on how they created and maintained their family businesses.
