DIRECTORY OF UMBRELLA NGOs
INTRODUCTION
This Directory of Umbrella NGOs includes information about the major NGOs operating in the Northwest Frontier Province. It is particularly focused on donor agencies that provide funding to the local NGOs.
The directory has been developed through the cooperation and
efforts of the InterAgency Group, an informal network of NGOs, government agencies, development projects and others engaged in community participation activities within the Northwest Frontier Province. A sub-committee of the InterAgency Group designed and reviewed the questionnaire for the Survey.
Preparation of the directory was made possible through financial support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through its contract with the Coverdale Organization.
This Directory is based on information obtained through a Survey of NGOs, Development Projects undertaken during the Spring, 1993. The informaticn provided has been entered into a database from which this directory has been generated.
The identification of organizations, agencies and projects for inclusion in the survey and directory was based on the knowledge and recommendations of a steering committee drawn from the InterAgency Group. The primary criteria for inclusion was involvement with community participation activities or programs.
Undoubtedly some organizations/agencies/projects have been inadvertently missed. This is regretted and can be corrected as the database and directory are updated and reissued.
The prparation of the database and directory was undertaken to encourage and promote the sharing of information and cooperation and collaboration among the respective agencies, organizations and projects. At a minimum the directory can help users become more aware of who is engaged in different types of activities within NWFP.
i

INSTRUCTIONS
This Directory consists of three parts:
1. The 'MAIN BODY' 2. The 'LOCATION INDEX 3. The 'ACTIVITIES INDEX'
MAIN BODY
This part of the directory contains all of the information that we are publishing about theorganizations that appear in the Directory. The entries on these organizations are arranged in alphabeticalorder by name. The entry for each organization starts on a separate page. Thus if the name of the
organization who's entry is sought is known, it ispossible to locate it without reference to the indices. It has been our effort to make the headings in the MAIN BODY self explanatory.
To find an organization/agency/project that isknown the user can refer to the TABLE OF CONTENTS.
LOCATION INDEX
Purpose: The purpose of the LOCATION INDEX is to enable the user to locate organizations operating in various
geographic areas.
Use: The user first locates the relevant location
heading in the index. Since the entries in the MAINBODY are arranged in alphabetical order by name, it isthen a simple matter to locate the relevant entry for any of the organizations listed under that location heading.
Format: 'Location' is the geographical areas in which theorganizations/agencies/projects operate: districts;
agencies; various groupings of the above; other
miscellaneous geo-political/administrative units.
Organizations operating country wide are listed under'COUNTRY WIDE' and those operating province wide arelisted under 'NWFP'. These two location headings appearat the beginning of the index for convenience. Allother location headings appear subsequent to these and are in alphabetical order. The names of the
organizations appearing under the location headings are also in alphabetical order.
ACTIVITIES INDEX
Purpose: The purpose of this index is to enable the user to
locate of organizations involved with a particular sector/field/activity within a given 'area'.
Use: The user first locates the activity heading that
is of interest and then, within that heading the desired location headings. Since the entries in the MAIN BODY are arranged in alphabetical order by name, it is then a simple matter to locate the relevant entry for any of the organizations listed under that location heading.
Format: This index is ordered first by the
sectors/fields/activities in which the listed organizations are involved and then the 'Location' or geographical area of their activities. For example, an organization working in education in District Swabi would be listed under 'EDUCATION' and within that heading under 'Swabi'.
The activities headings are in alphabetical order. Within the activities headings the location headings are also in alphabetical order with the exception of the three special headings 'Unreadable', 'Not Specified', 'Country Wide' and 'NWFP' which, where applicable, appear immediately after the relevant activities heading in that order. The names of the organizations appearing under each Location heading are again in alphabetical order.
