optimally to held this event.

The event has entered its 7th year with the same intention as from the first time to remind and

increase safety culture that exists in our daily life. In addition, we also aim to train students abilities

to analyze and solve problems related to safety which is one of the most important aspects in the

industry and the surrounding environment.

Essay Competition’s Guidebook 2019 contains some rules and terms that will be used by judges

and participants so that the competition can run accordingly. We hope this guidebook can be useful

INTRODUCTION

According to data from ILO (Internation Labor Organization), about 2.3 million people in this

world die from accidents at work. This is equivalent to 6000 deaths per day. The high number of work

accidents requires every production company to implement a system which consists of occupational

health and safety in all of its activities.

As a chemical engineer, safety is the most important aspect. The misuse of production

equipment, misbehaviour in act and conduct, process failures due to equipment factors, nature and

humans errors are examples of accident causes in working environment because of the lack or

ignorance of safety aspects.

SAFECOM 2019 is meant for students to practice analytical skills and provide solutions to a

safety related case. With the theme “Shaping Safety Mindset to Achieve Accident Free in

Laboratory”, it is expected to raise awareness of the importance of safety in environment and it must

be improved.

CASE STUDY

A student was doing a labwork in chemical engineering laboratory. He wanted to dissolve PVA in

the distilled water that has been preheated until 60oC before. He was intended to preheat the distilled

water with a spiritus. Due to the low of safety standard in the laboratory, the solution in the lab-

workstation were not labeled. The six solution (A,B,C,D,E, and F) were colorless like distilled water.

He took one of the solutions and pour it into the beaker glass. A moment after the solution was being

heated, the student came out from the laboratory to breathe fresh air because he felt dizzy. When he

returned to laboratory, his station was burning.

HINT :

1. When the acid-base indicator is added to solution A, it will give the golden yellow color.

2. When the solution D is added to the solution A that has been given acid-base indicator, it

will change the solution color turn into red.

3. Solution C has a distinctive smell and commonly used as a solvent in the Grignard reaction.

4. If the solution B is added to solution F, it will give the pink color to solution F.

5. When the solution D is added to the solution F that has been given with solution B, it will

change the color from pink to clear as before.

6. The solution E is commonly used as an anesthetic agent and can be synthesized by mixing

ethyl alcohol with calcium hypochlorite.

TASK :

1. Participants are expected to be able to identify the six solutions in the station based on the

instructions given.

2. Participants are also expected to analyze the causes of fires in the laboratory by analyzing

potential causes of accidents that are equipped with supporting data such as material safety

data sheet, etc.

3. Participants are expected to provide solutions to deal with this accidents in the laboratory

and provide preventive action so that the incident is not repeated.

4. Participants are expected to give an innovation to improve safety in laboratory according to

the incident.
