BUSINESS WATCH Biometric Technology Today • May 2002 5 Viisage moves forward but its CEO calls it a day US supplier of facial recognition systems Viisage Technology has announced its first quarter revenues for the month ending 31 March 2002. Overall first quarter sales grew slightly from US$6.37 million in 2001 to US$6.40 million. However, the company said that 11% of the total revenue was from facial recognition systems compared with 8% the year earlier. The facial recognition order backlog also tripled, representing around 20% of the quarter’s new business bookings for the quarter. A significant increase in sales and marketing spend meant the company made a net loss of US$857,000 this quarter compared with a net income of US$218,000 in the first quarter of 2001. In recent months the company has made significant ground in the facial recognition sector. Notably it secured a Department of Defense contract for US$672,000 for facial recognition surveillance systems; it deployed a high-profile pilot test at Boston's Logan International Airport using facial recognition for security screening; it acquired Biometrica Systems, a provider of facial recognition software to casinos, and it has added facial recognition capabilities to improve security for a second state drivers' license program. Following the close of the quarter, the company announced it had won the digital drivers' license contract for Connecticut, valued at US$7.5 million. This includes approximately US$700,000 in facial recognition systems and makes Conn- ecticut the third state to add this security capability to its drivers' license program. On a negative note, the company announced that Tom Colatosti, the company’s president and CEO, made a decision to resign effective 1 June this year.
