Definitions
• Precinct – a subdivision of a city; a neighborhood! (Spanish: Recinto)
• Caucus - a group or meeting of members of a political party (Spanish: Comité)
• Precinct Caucus – A meeting in a neighborhood for political purposes
• Senate District - A distinct geographical area within the state that is represented by one state senator (67 SDs in MN)
• Congressional District – a division of a state entitled to elect one member to the United States House of Representatives (8 CDs in MN)
What is the DFL Latino Caucus?• Caucus = Political meeting or group
(Spanish: Comité)• DFL Latino Caucus = Group of Latinos in the
Democratic Party (Comité de Latinos del Partido Demócrata)
• Advocating for issues in the Latino Community
• Supporting the strategies of the DFL party
Major Political Parties in Minnesota• Major political parties in MN
Republican Party• Funded in the 1850s• Dominant party in MN for the first 100 years
mostly because of a divided opposition (Democrats vs. Farmer Labor)
• Has governed for the last 20 years! DFL (Democratic Farmer Labor)
• Created in 1944 from the merger of the Democratic and the Farmer Labor Parties
Independence Party• Formed in1992 (Responsible for Gov. Ventura)

Precinct Caucuses in SD 61 – What to expect
• 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, February 2, 2010 Registration begins at 6:30 p.m.
• Vote for Democratic Governor candidate preference (unofficial vote)
• Elect delegates and alternates to attend the County Unit and/or Senate District Conventions
• Conduct Precinct business: elect a leader for the meeting, elect precinct officers, consider resolutions, etc.
• May appear a bit chaotic – a lot of stuff needs to be done in a short period of time.
Precinct Caucuses in SD 61 – Who can participate?
• You must be eligible to vote by Nov. 2, 2010 to run/vote for a delegate or alternate position or vote on the preference ballot
• For other caucus business, participants must be at least 16 by Nov. 2, 2010 – these participants are sometimes referred to as observers.
