Pre-internship

OBJECTIVES Pre-internship provides students with

opportunities to observe and participate in the counselling process as low-level operatives.

This is a chance for you to become familiarized with the counselling environment, to understand the counselling process, to develop an acute sense about the types of counsellees that frequent the different settings, and to offer rudimentary counselling.

All in all, pre-internship prepares students to enter the world of professional counselling.

Pre-internship

REQUIREMENTS TO BE FULFILLED Students when writing up their plan of pre-

internship training should attempt to introduce variety and should not restrict their training to one type of social service.

Pre-internship training is not supervised, and therefore it is up to the individual student to show commitment to the training.

As the students progress through the programme, they should endeavour to discuss their progress with their advisors assigned at the beginning of the first year by the University.

experience what is like to be a counsellee. This will enable students to understand the sort of

expectations which counsellees have for their counsellors, thus facilitating the development of empathy and acceptance.

It also provides an opportunity for the students to have reflective experience of the essential conditions that facilitate growth and promote positive outcomes in counselling.

This is a crucial element in preparing them for their professional development.
