Praying the
Scriptural Rosary
2
Praying with our Lady of Liverpool
The earliest place of Christian worship in Liverpool was by the Mersey, on the
present site of the parish church. A small chapel dedicated to Mary, probably
drawing on her ancient name ‘Star of the Sea’ was built sometime early in the
second millennium; a place where sailors would pray for God’s blessing before
a voyage and offer thanks afterwards. Mary had prayed by the grave of her son
in the darkness before the light of Easter. There was a graveyard by the chapel.
And there was an image of this woman who carried God within her; the first
Christian disciple. The statue of the Madonna would have been blackened by
soot from the candles lit in prayer. At the Reformation Liverpool’s image of
our Lady was lost, perhaps pulled down as an idol, or hidden, never to return.
In the centuries since, and as the port grew, sailors went from here across the
world. Millions of migrants passed by the church at the Pier Head, and offered
up prayers for the new life ahead of them. Far from the Mersey, slave ships
with Liverpool crews shackled Africans, for sale to plantations in the Americas.
Others came to settle in Liverpool, and many millions prayed with Mary as
they sought to hold to the faith of God with us, revealed in Jesus. When
Liverpool Cathedral was built the Lady Chapel was the first part to be
completed and opened for worship, a few years before the First World War.
On St James’ Mount, watching over the city and river, disciples of Jesus Christ
have prayed with Mary for a century, for peace, justice, and salvation for the
city and the whole wide world, ‘My soul doth magnify the Lord’.
The rosary is a tradition of Christian prayer promoted by St Francis of Assisi.
He believed that God was calling him to help renew the Church in prayer, and
was inspired by St Luke’s description of Mary pondering these things in her
heart. The rosary uses prayer beads to help focus the body and heart on the
mysteries of the Gospel. The scriptural rosary invites us to be with Mary as
our friend and fellow disciple, as witnesses to the wonderful love of God
revealed in Jesus. The only qualification you need to pray the rosary is a desire
to know God more deeply.
O Mary, Star of the Sea, our Lady of Liverpool, pray with us sinners for
the conversion of this city. May we be humble and hungry for God, who
fills us with good things, even Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

HOW TO PRAY THE ROSARY
Using a standard set of rosary beads, the prayer begins by holding the crucifix, and all
repeating the Apostles’ Creed:
I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord; who was conceived by the
Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell. The third
day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven, and
sitteth on the right hand of God the Father almighty. From thence
he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Ghost, the holy catholic Church, the
communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the
body, and the life everlasting. Amen.
Holding the first bead the person leading begins the Lord’s Prayer:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy
will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine is
the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.
On the next three beads pray this prayer on each bead:
Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women,
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour
of our death.
Then, in the gap after the three beads the person says:
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be world without
end. Amen.
Then follow the instructions for the chosen set of Mysteries.
The devotion finishes with all saying the prayer Hail, Holy Queen:
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and
our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee
do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb,
Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Pray for us, O Holy
Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of
Christ. Amen.

THE FIRST JOYFUL MYSTERY: THE ANNUNCIATION
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come;
thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.

And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine
is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

womb leaped for joy. (Lk 1:43-44)
5) And blessed is she who believed that there would be a fulfilment of
what was spoken to her by the Lord.” (Lk 1:45)

One has done great things for me, and holy is his name. (Lk 1:49)

Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign for you: you will find a child
wrapped in bands of cloth and lying in a manger.” (Lk 2:11-12)

praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on
earth peace among those whom he favours!” (Lk 2:13-14)

6) When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said
to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has
taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” (Lk 2:15)
7) So they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the child lying
in the manger. (Lk 2:16)

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come;
thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. For thine
is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen.

rejoice; you will have pain, but your pain will turn into joy. (Jn 16:20)

and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.

in, they did not find the body. (Lk 24:2-3)

but has risen. (Lk 24:4-5)
7) Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of
Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third
day rise again.” (Lk 24:6-7)

told all this to the eleven and to all the rest. (Lk 24:8-9)

THE FINAL PRAYER
OF THE ROSARY
Hail, Holy Queen, Mother of Mercy, hail, our life, our sweetness and
our hope. To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee
do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this vale of tears.
Turn, then, most gracious Advocate, thine eyes of mercy toward us,
and after this our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb,
Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary.
Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God, that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.
Another Way of Praying the Rosary
Some may prefer to use the Jesus Prayer instead of the Hail Mary. You can
easily pray the Rosary this way, still meditating on the mysteries as outlined
above, but using this prayer on the appropriate beads:
Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner.
In the Eastern Orthodox churches this prayer is a mainstay of personal
devotion, and a way of taking to heart the meaning of the holy name of Jesus – ‘God saves’ in the original Hebrew.
