Stunning Images Depict Connecticut’s Institutional Past
This collection of photographs, history, and firsthand
accounts gives readers a glimpse at the roots of
mental health. These vignettes are born of the
personal stories of those who worked at these
facilities, those who were institutionalized, and their
families. The authors took the time to listen to their
stories and endeavored to understand their past and
recognize how these events continue to influence the
mental health industry today. Pictured throughout
are the physical relics of the places—the now largely
abandoned asylums of Connecticut—where these
stories unfurled.

From the Introduction:
Author Lynn Blanchard says of the book, “We
approached this project from different angles. Tammy
loved the architecture… I, on the other hand, come at it
from a psychological perspective… Tammy and I spoke
with dozens of people, all with a unique impression of
how the most horrific and unimaginable, alongside the
most wonderful, shaped the mental health field today
and will continue to as it evolves. Our goal has always
been to tell the story; to let you in, behind the scenes.
Perhaps, in our own way, we want to start changing the
stigma associated with mental illness.” (pg. 7)

Tammy Rebello Author
Tammy Rebello, 43, is a native of Worcester Massachusetts and
currently resides in Oxford MA where she has been a resident for the
last 13 years. Her interest in local history and the mostly forgotten
past of these asylums and the stories from within, are what started
her on the road to bring this subject matter to the public. A 2015
graduate of Worcester State University in Worcester, MA., Tammy is currently pursuing a career in
local history and communication. When not out photographing, Tammy is spending time with her
four beautiful children; Amanda, Emalee, Austin and Errick.
L. F. Blanchard Author
LF Blanchard was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts,
where she is an artist and writer. While she’s been writing most
of her life, she only recently found her place in the art world.
Her mother was a self-taught portrait artist and was one of LF’s
biggest cheerleaders. Encouraged to take an art class, she
stepped into that world, and hasn’t looked back. She enjoys the
challenge of undertaking several different forms of art, but has
a special affection for acrylics. Her artwork, photography and
information on upcoming shows and projects, can be found on
her website, LFBlanchard.com as well as her Facebook page, of
the same name.
