THERE ARE THREE DIFFERENT GENERATOR APPLICATIONSSelecting the correct generator for your application is critical in delivering true cost of life
efficiency. It is the key to saving money, both up front and over the life of your generator.
Sizing a generator correctly is a very specialised skill and offering unbiased advice on which
brand and model of engine to use can save you more than the entire cost of the machine in
fuel efficiency.
PRIME MOBILEYou are using the generator as the primary source of power and it
needs to be moved from place to place such as a construction, mining
or rental application. Once again, fuel consumption is everything in
prime applications. Up to 90% of your costs will be fuel.
Get your generator sized correctly and compare the fuel efficiency
of the available engines in that size. You also need to ensure you use
a machine with a very heavy duty frame and canopy.
PRIME FIXED You are using the generator as the primary source of power but it will
remain in one location for all or most of it’s operating life. Fuel
consumption is everything in prime applications. Up to 90% of your
costs will be fuel.
Get your generator sized correctly and compare the fuel efficiency
of the available engines in that size. You can save some money by
using a machine that has a lighter frame and canopy as it will not be
moved from site to site.
CHOOSING A GENERATOR
1 2 3STAND BY You have mains power and the generator acts as a back-up in case of
a blackout. The generator will only run a small number of hours per
year so price is a key decision making criteria. It is also important to
ensure the machine you buy has ready access to parts and service.
* AS MANY AS 70% OF GENERATORS ARE SOLD INTO STAND-BY APPLICATIONS.
When buying a prime mobile machine it is important that you select a generator
that is specifically built to be moved from place to place.

EXAMPLE 1/ POWERING A SMALL, DEMOUNTABLE OFFICEA contractor requires power for a demountable office. A VIKING tech establishes the load
produced to be 6kva. The tech then provides a comparison of the available engines in the 6kva
size range.
It is determined that manufacturer A has an engine that will deliver a 1 litre per hour fuel
advantage over the next most efficient engine. This represents 8,760 litres per annum in fuel
savings for the customer on a generator that costs approximately $10,000 per year to rent.
The fuel savings available mean that the next most efficient engine would need to be provided
for free to even be of equal value to manufacturer A’s engine.
EXAMPLE 2/ POWERING AN OIL & GAS CONSTRUCTION SITEAn oil & gas company is building a multi-billion dollar infrastructure project. Mains power is
unavailable during the three-year construction phase. A VIKING engineering team establishes
power output required for the power station to be 5 megawatts.
A detailed load study determines that 2 x 3 megawatt modules comprised of 4 x 1.5Mva
prime rated generators to be the most efficient configuration. Engine fuel comparison
determines that there are some 675,000 litres per annum in available fuel savings by selecting
manufacturer B. This allows over 50% of the overall cost of the installation to be returned to
the client in cost savings on fuel.

Powering camps is one of the largest opportunities for significant fuel savings and providing
power to remote accommodation camps is a core competency of VIKING INDUSTRIAL. The
fluctuating power demand generated by camps provides an opportunity to deliver material cost
and efficiency benefits.
POWERING CAMPS
We achieve this by:
• Accurately mapping the 24 hour load behaviour of the camp
• Providing a system of generators to chase the load efficiently
• Comparing the available engines in the applicate generator class for fuel consumption
• Using three smaller generators instead of the traditional one or two large machines
• Capitalising on the long periods of time that camps are unoccupied or have low occupancy
