  • Buying and merchandising are the specialist retail functions that lie at the heart of a fashion brands ability to respond effectively to fast-changing fashion trends.

Buyers and merchandisers are responsible for creating ranges and ensuring profitable sales. The ability to forecast and react to trends and changes in demand are a vital element of the roles.

Over two terms you will develop a wide range of relevant commercial skills and competencies.

You will explore how fashion trends emerge, how market gaps can be exploited, and how to analyse data and sales patterns to make commercial decisions.

The programme will build your knowledge of textiles and clothing manufacture, and how garments develop from concept through to the final product.

You will learn about planning seasonal collections, identifying commercial product opportunities, merchandise range planning, retail pricing and margin management, and competitor analysis.

The programme will also strengthen your skills in team work, communication, negotiation and numeracy in specific buying and merchandising contexts.

For your final project, you will work as part of a team role-play, applying all that you have learnt to a typical buying and merchandising problem-solving scenario.

Working on live industry issues will give you a headstart in the employability stakes. On graduation you will be prepared with the necessary specialist fashion knowledge, skills, commercial understanding and industry insights to suit you for a range of positions in buying and merchandising.

The programme takes an in-depth look at the opportunities and challenges of digital fashion media, giving you the confidence to work across new forms of communication as they emerge.

You will also develop your eye for design and the deep understanding of fashion heritage that makes for informed journalism.

You will explore textiles and product manufacturing, and look at sustainability and ethical issues in contemporary fashion.

In your final project, you will create a portfolio or showcase, either in print or online, that displays what you have achieved.
