HIGH RISE MODULAR SUBURBIAS

HDB TOWER BLOCKS OF SINGAPORE HORIZONTAL TO VERTICAL URBAN FABRIC

STREET LIFE INTO STRUCTURE

THE INABILITY TO EXPAND SINGAPORE’S LANDMASS WOULD RESULT IN THE PROLIFERATION OF HDB TOWER BLOCKS TO ACCOMMODATE THE RISING POPULATION OF SINGAPORE IN THE FORESEEABLE FUTURE. AS DENSIFYING DEVELOPMENT IS THE ONLY EFFICIENT METHOD OF REDUCING THE AMOUNT OF LAND REQUIRED FOR DEVELOPMENT. HOWEVER, AS IT IS THE ONLY AFFORDABLE HOUSING OPTION IN SINGAPORE, IT ENDED UP RESTRICTING THE ABILITY FOR THE PEOPLE OF SINGAPORE TO DICTATE ON HOW THEY WANT TO LIVE DUE TO THE RIGIDITY OF TOWER BLOCKS.

WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF VERICAL MODULAR SUBURBIAS, IT AIMS TO BREAK AWAY FROM THE MONOTONY OF TOWER BLOCKS AND INSTILL A SENSE OF VARIETY INTO THE LIVING CONDITIONS OF SUBURBAN SINGAPORE. IT IS TO GIVE MORE CON-TROL TO THE PEOPLE ON HOW THEY WANT TO LIVE INSTEAD OF BEING A MATTER OF CHOOSING A TOWER BLOCK AND PREDEFINED SETS OF APARTMENT PLANS. THE USAGE OF PREFABRICATED CONTAINER MODULES ALLOWS FOR MASS PRODUCTION WHILE AT THE SAME TIME ALLOWS FOR MASS CUSTOMISATION. THE FORM EASES CUSTOMISABILITY AND WITH THE GIVEN SPACE OF WITHIN THESE SUBURBIAS, THE PEOPLE COULD ORCHESTRATE THE NUMBER OF MODULES THAT THEY NEED AND HOW THEY WANT TO LAY IT OUT. THESE MODULES CATERS TO A VARIETY OF FUNCTIONS AND NOT JUST LIMITED TO RESIDENTIAL UNITS AS THEY CAN ALSO FUNCTION AS RETAIL, OFFICE, COMMERCIAL OR EVEN STORAGE UNITS. THIS OPENS UP A LOT OF POSSIBILITIES TO AN OTHERWISE BLEAK FUTURE.

CUSTOMISABLE MODULES

ENHANCING THE CULTURAL QUALITIES OF SINGAPORE’S DIVERSE ETHNICITIES

UTILISING THE EXISTING MRT RAIL LINES AS THE MAIN METHOD OF TRANSPORT, BOTH FOR THE MODULES AND ITS INHABITANTS.

MODULE CONFIGURATIONS

THE MODULAR FRAMEWORK ALLOWS THE POSSIBILITY OF VARIOUS MODULE CONFIGURATIONS FOR THE OWNER TO LAYOUT THEIR SPACES. INTEGRATION TO THE MRT INFRASTRUCTURE WOULD PROVE TO BE A CONVENIENCE FOR THE TRANSPORTATION OF THE INHABITANTS AND MODULES.

MAJOR COMMERCIAL UNITS ARE MORE CONCENTRATED ON THE LOWER LEVELS INCLUDING THE GROUND LEVEL AS IT WILL BE MORE SUCCESSFUL AS COMPARED TO LOCATING IT ON THE UPPER LEVELS. HAWKER STALLS LOCATED IN THE LOWER LEVELS REFLECT THE SINGAPOREAN CULTURE FOR THEIR LOVE OF FOOD AND EATING OUTDOORS.

THE CENTRAL CORRIDOR OF THE SUBURBIAS, MEASURED TO CATER FOR THE FORKLIFT CIRCULATION, ALLOWS VARIOUS COMMUNAL AND RECREATIONAL ACTIVITIES TO OC-CUR WITHIN THOSE SPACES. COMMERCIAL MODULES COULD ALSO UTILISE THE LARGE SPACE FOR NON-PERMANENT STRUCTURES, I.E. STALLS, TABLES, CHAIRS AND ETC. RANDOMISATION OF THE MODULE PLACEMENT AND THE REQUIREMENT FOR EVERY LEVEL TO RESTRICT FROM FILLING UP THE MODULE SPACES THUS BLOCKING THE PEN-ETRATION OF SUNLIGHT, WILL ALLOW AMPLE SUNLIGHT TO PENETRATE. ADDITION-ALLY, THE MODULE SPACES CAN BE CONVERTED INTO A COMMUNAL GARDEN SPACE.

MIXED USE MODULES AND THE MULTI-USE CORRIDOR HELPS PROMOTE A LIVELY ENVI-RONMENT FOR THE INHABITANTS, BREAKING FROM THE STERILE RIGID ENVIRONMENT OF TOWER BLOCKS.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT PRECEDENTS

“Paris Spatial illustrates the possibility of avoiding the total suburbanisation of the city. About 75 percent of the inhabitants of Greater Paris live in the suburbs” (Lebesque, 1999: 34)

PARIS SPATIAL

“Vertical pillar-like towers on which the building volumes to be used are suspended like shelves. The pillar represents the central nucleus, contain-ing all vertical circulation, comfort elements and main ducts.” (Lebesque, 1999: 107)

PILLAR LIKE TOWERS arata isozaki

“An assembly of tower buildings of any kind, interlinked through bridges, passerelles, escalators, staircases etc., thus permitting horizontal or diago-nal circulation above ground level.” (Lebesque, 1999: 108)

VERTICAL CLUSTERS

“Built adjacent to Container City I, with inter-connecting bridges, a new lift and full disabled access, Container City II was completed in 2002 provid-ing a further five floors of workspace and a great focal point to this exciting arts quarter.”

CONTAINER CITY | LONDON, ENGLAND

“Leaning on neighbouring buildings to lift itself above the street level allows for a green square beneath the building that increases the area of the existing recreation zone. Suspended elevators provide public direct access to the buildings amenities, serving as the primary infrastructure linking the building to the ground.”

ELEVATED NIGHT CLUB HOTEL | HONG KONG30

“Habitat 67 was constructed from 354 identical and completely prefabricated modules (referred to as “box-es”) stacked in various combinations and connected by steel cables. The apartments vary in shape and size, since they are formed by a group of one to four of the 600 square-foot “boxes” in different configurations.” (Merin, 2013) “Habitat 67 thus pioneered the integration of two housing typologies—the suburban garden home and the economical high-rise apartment building.” (Merin, 2013)

HABITAT 67 | MONTREAL, CANADA

“Single bedroom dwellings in the heart of Tokyo, studios for the use of businessmen living in distant suburbs of the city or hotel space for businessmen staying in Tokyo for brief periods.” (Kurosawa, 1977)

“The number of homes decreasing rapidly, as large numbers of people moved to outlying areas. It became an issue of some importance to restore housing units to the central part of the city..” (Kurosawa, 1977)

NAKAGIN TOWER | TOKYO, JAPAN

“The 220,000 square meter pedestrian-oriented Linked Hybrid complex, sited adjacent to the site of old city wall of Beijing, aims to counter the current privatized urban developments in China by creating a new twen-ty-first century porous urban space, inviting and open to the public from every side. Filmic urban public space; around, over and through multifaceted spatial layers, as well as the many passages through the project, make the Linked Hybrid an “open city within a city”.”

LINKED HYBRID | BEIJING, CHINA

“a self-contained city for 120,000 that accommodates housing, education, culture, welfare, medical, amusement & industry resources.” (Jones, 2009)

“The Hyperbuilding can be read as the integration of several buildings into a larger whole. The different elements support each other in every sense: architecturally, they form an integrated complex; technical-ly, issues of stability, access, circulation and servicing are organised collectively; urbanistically, the entire building becomes an urban quarter of a new kind.” (Jones, 2009)

SINGAPORE RESEARCH & ANALYSIS

Increasing population in cities have resulted in increased densification, resulting in a plethora of repercussions within and outwith. In the event of overcrowding, independent island nations would be the ones highly affected by their limited land mass and natural resources.

DENSITY

40

Page 41: Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Architectural Design

Land scarcity of Singapore have always been a prevalent problem. Since the 1960s the island nation have always relied on land reclamation to expand their bounda-ries for expansion and development. However, in recent years reclamation methods have faced criticism and further expansions seems bleak for the island nation.

LAND To cope with the rising population and provide affordable yet quality shelter for the masses, the HDB (Housing Development Board) of Singapore allocated tower blocks as the ideal solution. Implementation of their 10 principles on high density living have made Singapore the most livable dense city in Asia-Pacific to an extent.

HOUSING

“SINCE 2007, half of the world’s population live in cities, reinforcing the continued trend towards inner city transmigration in correlation to rapid economic progress.” (unfpa 2007)
