Blend light and dark with thisstylish wall light, £1,166.50,from House Couturier

Monochrome magic can

RAZZLE-DAZZLE colourmay be having its day ininteriors, but do youreally want to wearsunglasses to avoid the

glare whenever you enter yourhome?

For those secretly yearning forcalm, peaceful spaces and soothingneutral schemes, a little mono-chrome magic could be the answer.

Black and white’s always been aclassic decor choice – it’s the equi-valent of that wardrobe staple theLBD (Little Black Dress) – and can besimilarly dressed up or down to suityour mood.

“Monochrome continues to standthe test of time for the simple factthat black and white is a simplisticpallet but can be combined withdashes of colour for a dramaticeffect,” says Sally Chamley, founderof Black Orchid Interiors.

“You just have to plan extremelywell to achieve the correct balance ofblack and white. I prefer a smart, tailored, modern look, allowingwhite or neutrals to dominate.”

That said, there are many moreinterpretations including a rococostyle with elaborate pattern anddetail, creating a moody Gothic feelby allowing black to dominate, or aglamorous art deco style featuringlight-reflecting mirrored surfacesand glossy black finishes.

“Capturing a 1920s look usingmonochrome can be a smart way toachieve affordable eye-catching opu-lence,” says Chamley.

“Mirrored finishes were popularin the Twenties and these combineso well with black.

“Also, classic art deco shapes areall about interesting silhouettes andblack depicts this perfectly.

“Use symmetry to enhance a feel-ing of order and calm.”

Black and white, by their forcefulcontrast, tend to lean towards asmart, formal atmosphere, so con-sider interesting fabrics with a pat-tern and texture to create a moreplayful effect, advises Simon Cavelle, interior designer of fabric special-ists, JAB Anstoetz. Its Black & Whitefabric collection starts from £93.80 ametre.

“The scale of a room or piece offurniture should also be consideredwhen choosing the size of patterns,”he says.

“Often it’s safer to use the boldestmonochrome patterns on things likecushions as these can be removed orreplaced at the least cost.”

Warming colours used in accessor-ies can ensure a black and white

scheme doesn’t look too cool, and hesuggests creating a punchy contrastwith colours such as lime green, sharp pink, hot red and orange.

So view your home in black andwhite, snap up some monochromehome buys, and you could findeverything comes into a fashionablenew focus!

BLACK & WHITE VISIONDiffident decorators can play it

safe with all-white walls, but makethem come alive with black andwhite photographic prints, which arean on-trend choice for wall art.

Stores such as John Lewis have anexcellent selection.

Alternatively, make a statementwith a feature wall in a glossy blackfinish. In a bedroom, choose the onebehind a bed for impact.

Small rooms or dining spaces canbe enhanced with black walls, con-juring an enclosed sanctuary feel, but good lighting and mirrors will beessentials so that the atmosphere ismoody but not overpowering.

Designers have embraced mono-chrome, and Julien Macdonald’sstunning wallpaper range for Gra-ham & Brown features a black Discopaper which sparkles under light, for£30 a roll, or Easy Tiger, combiningblack and silver, £60 a roll.

John Lewis has a Marimekko col-lection of monochrome graphicdesigns, starting from £56.95 a roll.

MONOCHROME MAGIC: One ofmy favourite papers, Albany Cat-walk, portrays Bond Girls’ silhou-ettes on camera film. £19.99 per rollfrom Wallpaperdirect.

SET THE SCENEIt’s important that spaces aren’t

over-cluttered otherwise the serenityof monochrome will be lost, so selecta few well-designed pieces of fur-niture.
