Putting students first to make learning last a lifetime.

Celebrating academics, diversity, and innovation.

Pasco School District students, employees, board

members, and the community celebrated the com-

pletion of the 2018 Team Pasco Home with a dedi-

cation ceremony and open house at the home on

May 30.

A product of the Pasco Vocational Building Pro-

gram, the Team Pasco Homes project is a joint ef-

fort involving students from Chiawana, New

Horizons, and Pasco high schools. Construction

Trades students built the home under the guidance of

teacher John Weatherby with contributions from

agriculture science, floriculture, and metals and

welding technology students.

This is the 20th house built since the program began

21 years ago, which was originally called Bulldog

House. The name changed to Team Pasco Homes

when Chiawana and New Horizons students joined the

program.

For the students involved in the project, there is a

tremendous sense of pride in knowing they’ve built

something that will soon become a home for a Pasco

family. “It took a lot of hard work, and a lot of team-

work for us to build this house. It’s a beautiful home

and we’re really proud of it,” says Chiawana High

School senior Jose Cruz.

During the dedication ceremony, Pasco Vocational

Buildings Program Board President Carl Leth

presented Pasco High Principal Raul Sital with a

special plaque to honor Sital’s many years of support

for the program. Sital is leaving PHS this summer to

become the district’s Executive Director of Student

Achievement.

Since 1999, the Pasco Vocational Buildings Program

Board has awarded $219,250 in scholarships to Pasco

students. This year, the Board awarded $11,000 in

scholarships to eight students.

This year’s house, which is located at 5009 Meadow

View Drive in Pasco, is listed with Century 21 Tri-

Cities Realtor Vicki Monteagudo for $354,900. Visit

Chiawana Students Head to National MESA Competition

A team of three Chiawana High School sopho-

mores are traveling to Philadelphia, PA this month

to compete in the MESA (Mathematics Engineer-

ing Science Achievement) National Engineering

Design Competition. The team of Alexandria

Cortez, Geovanni Beltran and Lucio Rodriguez

recently took 1st place in all three categories of the

Arduino STEM Solutions competition at the

Washington State MESA Challenge in Redmond

on May 19. In fact, it’s the first time that one

school has swept all three categories at the state

competition. The Chiawana team will travel to

Temple University June 19-23 to compete against

the other state champions from the ten states that

make up the MESA USA programs.

The Arduino STEM Solutions competition challenges

students to create a prototype that solves a human

need while incorporating a programming component

into their prototype design. The Chiawana team devel-

oped a “B-Safe” bicycle accessory prototype that uses

photocell and ultrasonic sensors to warn riders about

nearby objects, such as approaching cars. The proto-

type the students developed is actually an accessory

kit that can be added to any bicycle.

In addition, a team of five Chiawana High School jun-

iors also took 1st place in all three categories of the

Computer App Simulation Challenge at the state

MESA Day competition. The team of Ihzik Flores,

Hunter Lightfall, Chia Chen Lin, Doan Nguyen and

Alexandro Rebuelta developed and created a simu-

lated app that shows how the use of nuclear power

affects food, water and energy in the Tri-Cities

community.

In the middle school division, the team from Ochoa

Middle School placed 2nd in the MESA Computer

App Challenge at the state competition. They de-

signed and created an app that involved a basketball

game simulation that helps users learn math concepts

as they make baskets.

Chiawana Boys Track & Field Team Captures State 4A Championship

Congratulations to the Chiawana High School boys track & field team! The Riverhawks scored 74 points at

the State 4A Track & Field Championships in Tacoma to earn a share of the team title alongside Bothell,

Camas and Issaquah.

Senior Germain Barnes won individ-

ual state titles in the 110-meter hur-

dles and the 300-meter hurdles, and

the team of Bennie Alferness,

Cameron Breier, Teddy Hunter and

Sisay West finished 1st in the 4 x 400

-meter relay.

Great job Riverhawks!
