Positive Is Better Than Negative BY REV. HARRY GYOKYO BRIDGE

THIS STATEMENT, “POSITIVE IS better than negative,” is something

that occurred to me over the summer.

It’s not an absolute statement – I am

actually very open to poking holes in it.

But for now I would like to share a few

of my ideas relating to this idea.

I think where it works is in the sense

of taking a positive attitude rather than

being negative. So instead of complain-

ing, try and come up with a construc-

tive response. It’s so easy to complain! It

takes more work to try and turn things

around and come up with a solution, or

at the very least an alternate viewpoint.

But this can be taken too far as

well – if we just say “don’t complain”

then we might be silencing a legiti-

mate critique. The freedom to com-

plain and criticize is very important

to me, it is important to democracy.

When we aren’t allowed to complain

we are in big trouble. But we also need

to be willing to help change things.

Another way to view this statement

“positive is better than negative” is to try

and look at things from a positive point

of view. Something that we initially view

as negative could actually have positive CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

IT HAD BEEN ABOUT TWO months since we finally got together

on Thu, August 18. It was great to see

our friends again. Our Ms. Patty was

on board for our usual Yoga exercises

and we thank Patty for helping us to

limber up our aching bones. Thank you

very much Patty.

We talked about plans for the

remainder of the year. Holding a dim

sum luncheon, and perhaps a movie

in September. In November, we look

forward to having June and Harry

Bergland join us to talk about their

fabulous trip to Tanzania and join-

ing the couple will be Ernie Lao, their

friend and photographer who was

able to join them on their fabulous

trip. After talking with June, I, my-

self, became excited and am looking

forward to hearing their story. I also

understand Mr. Lao was able to take

many photos of interest during this

trip. We will probably hold a year-end

luncheon also and then it will be the

end of the year. How time does fly!. n

OCTOBER 20195

I GREW UP AT BUDDHIST CHURCH of Oakland (BCO), which means that

I attended this church as a kid simply

because four generations of my fam-

ily had done so. I once read that the

Japanese government in the Tokuga-

wa period mandated that members of

the same family belong to the same

religious school and that is partly

where this passive dynamic origi-

nates. Factoids aside, I was always a

Jodo Shinshu Buddhist without having

declared myself one. At some point

in my adulthood, I came to under-

stand Buddhism’s role in my life in a

way that allowed me to affirmatively

identify as Jodo Shinshu Buddhist.

Recently, a whole host of causes and

conditions allowed me to come back

to church regularly. So I started show-

ing up again at Sunday services, just

as I had when I was a kid, but it still

felt somewhat passive. Admittedly, I

wondered whether it was necessary

for me to become an official “church

member” in light of the fact that my

parents were. And if it was, what is the

process to become a member? Does

this sound familiar to anyone?

At first, this was hard to fig-

ure out on my own. No one ever sat

me down for a talk about church

mechanics and there is no how-to

guide. I think it’s partly because Jodo

Shinshu Buddhism is inherently in-

ward-looking, meaning it emphasizes

each follower’s individual path and

discourages followers from focusing

on other people’s actions. This is one

of the reasons Jodo Shinshu appeals

to many people. The paradox for the

layperson is that this also means that

often, the way things work at church

isn’t clearly spelled out, as fellow Bud-

dhists respect your personal path and

let “you do you.” This can conflict with

our Western tendency to intellectual-

ize and seek concrete answers where

there may be none. For better or

worse, I’m not ashamed to ask even the

simplest questions and, luckily, there

are knowledgeable people within the

BCO who are willing to humor me and

explain. I’d like to share what I learned

with others who might find them-

selves asking the same questions I did.

A special thank you to John Mina-

1. Member registration form: This

is available in the church office and

can be completed and returned to

the office at any point in the year.

(Note: Separate registration pro-

cedures exist for Dharma School,

Gakuen, Youth Club, OBWA and oth-

er organizations within the BCO).

2. Membership dues: The typical

amount is $150 per adult, paid on a

yearly basis at any point in the year.

A fixed portion of each member’s

dues goes to the Buddhist Church-

es of America (BCA) and anything

above that amount funds the vari-

ous programs at our church. See the

membership brochure for details.

3. What happens next: Members are

assigned to a “HOST group” (large

teams of members who assist with

Sunday services and temple main-

tenance one month of the year) and

are also assigned shifts at Bazaar and

Obon in the summer, though chair-

persons usually discuss it with you

beforehand. Members receive the

Busshin newsletter in the mail (pub-

lished monthly by the BCO), contain-

ing messages from Sensei and the

Church President, temple news, and

monthly temple calendars. Members

also receive the Wheel of Dharma

newspaper in the mail (published

monthly by the BCA), containing

messages from the Bishop and the

BCA President, articles explaining

Jodo Shinshu, and nationwide news

from various temples. Members also

receive the BCO member directory

and emails about events at our church.

By participating in different as-

pects of church for the first time as an

adult, I’m slowly observing how our

church functions and how things hap-

pen. Frankly, the learning curve for how

things work at church feels steep, even

as someone who grew up in the BCO.

And yet, I experience Amida’s compas-

sion through generous BCO members

who patiently entertain my questions

while respecting my path. The Dharma

School parents take time to explain to

me their roles over the years. The long-

time Bazaar and Obon volunteers gra-

ciously give me direction in the kitch-

en. The kindness that new members,

like me, receive from the many experi-

enced BCO members leaves me hope-

ful that church knowledge will come

naturally to me, too, as time passes. n

aspects. Often when we have a nega-

tive reaction we basically assume that

this reaction is the only possibility,

but I think it is very helpful to realize

that whichever view you take, there

are other possible views as well. In

other words, try not to get stuck in

one viewpoint.

Buddhist concepts and values

like Impermanence & Interdepen-

dence, like Wisdom & Compassion, can

also help us remember to try and be

positive instead of negative. It is

important to keep in mind, though,

that this idea – that positive is better

than negative – is not always as easy as

it might seem. I hope to visit this topic

again. In the meantime I will close with

one more statement – that the ultimate

positive attitude is found in Namo

Amida Butsu. n

COLORFUL KIMONO AND JUICY teriyaki steaks; aikido and taiko;

ikebana and cha-no-yu, koto and live

my take-aways from our 2019 Obon

Thank you to everyone who had a

hand in making this year’s Obon Festi-

happens only as a result of the incred-

supporters within our Sangha and in

the community at-large. It cannot be

stressed how much the Church appre-

hours in the kitchen; over the hot and

smoky BBQ grills; provide the muscle-

power required to build and take-

down the yagura, the booths and

tents; and the general clean-up re-

quired afterwards; provide the logis-

tics of purchasing, permitting and

planning; all the affiliated church

groups (Youth Club, Jr. YBA, OBWA)

who provide manpower; and all of

your generous contributions that

make this event an annual success.

A special thank you to all of our

students of the Alameda Aikikai for

their Aikido demonstration; Ms. Shir-

and their students for the wonderful

koto recital; Eden Taiko for bringing

their artistry to Jackson Street; and the

Chidori Band from San Jose for pro-

viding their special performance and

the live “ondo” music that we all enjoy

as a tradition for our Obon Festival.

Thank you also to representatives of

community groups: J-Sei for bringing

information on programs for seniors

in our community; and a member of

the Crystal City Pilgrimage Steering

Committee who brought information

and petitions on efforts to halt child

detention at Fort Sill, the former in-

carceration camp for many Buddhist

priests during WWII; and a petition

to close all detention centers in the

face of current efforts to address im-

migration along our southern border.

And to all of you who came

out and enjoyed the day, thank

you for your generous support of

the Buddhist Church of Oakland.
