PharmacoEconomics & Outcomes News 391 - 30 Nov 2002 Pharmacist-managed diabetes mellitus care can have a positive effect on patient healthcare outcomes without increases in resource use or hypoglycaemic events, report US-based researchers. They retrospectively compared outcomes among 172 male prison inmates in Texas with diabetes who were enrolled in a pharmacist-managed chronic care clinic (n = 87) or received standard care without pharmacist participation (controls). Eighteen months after clinic enrolment, patients receiving pharmacist care showed improvements in mean glycaemic control, whereas values for control patients remained stable. Patients receiving pharmacist care had significantly more scheduled clinic visits than controls. However, more unscheduled diabetes-related clinic visits among controls than among pharmacist-managed patients equalised resource use. Irons BK, et al.
