■ Pharmacist-managed diabetes mellitus care canhave a positive effect on patient healthcare outcomeswithout increases in resource use or hypoglycaemicevents, report US-based researchers. Theyretrospectively compared outcomes among 172 maleprison inmates in Texas with diabetes who wereenrolled in a pharmacist-managed chronic care clinic(n = 87) or received standard care without pharmacistparticipation (controls). Eighteen months after clinicenrolment, patients receiving pharmacist care showedimprovements in mean glycaemic control, whereasvalues for control patients remained stable. Patientsreceiving pharmacist care had significantly morescheduled clinic visits than controls. However, moreunscheduled diabetes-related clinic visits amongcontrols than among pharmacist-managed patientsequalised resource use.Irons BK, et al.
