Our Sponsors

Welcome to the 17th annual Northwest Quilting Expo. We are dedicating this year’s show to one of our founding members, Shellie O’Donnell, who lost her fight with ovarian cancer last September. Shellie’s passion for all things quilting and for the Northwest Quilting Expo was the driving force behind so much of what we have become in the past 17 years.

Our first show was held at the Washington County Fairgrounds with about 20 vendors and 100 quilts. Shellie’s commitment to making each year’s show better than the last has gotten us where we are today. We are continuing Shellie’s commitment to excellence and this year’s show will be amazing! Plan to spend a day or two seeing the hundreds of juried quilts on display.

Don’t miss our special exhibits by McKenna Ryan, Cathy Erickson, Linda Reinert and more. You’ll find details in the following pages.

Consider taking a class by our talented featured instructors: Swan Amity Sheridan, Laura Heine, Esterita Austin and Helene Knott. Classes are taking place both before and during the show. Of course, we will have our ever-popular Creative Handwork, Make & Take, and Lecture/Demo classes.

In addition to our usual vendors, we have added some new and unique vendors. Don’t miss these special shopping opportunities!

Thank you for your years of support; we can’t wait to see you in September!

—Geri Grasvik, Laura Dickson and Jim O’Donnell

Washington Stars Quilt Guild: Olympia, WashingtonThis Washington guild was recently featured in Quiltmania magazine. Their work has been shown in the Washington State Capitol rotunda. They are the only guild to have that honor. The 180 members are very active in local nonprofits, including charities that benefit homeless children and the food bank.

McKenna Ryan: Simply Beautiful…Beautifully SimpleMcKenna Ryan is loved the world over for her whimsical yet realistic nature-inspired quilt and fabric designs. For over 20 years she’s delighted and inspired her many fans with hundreds of Simply Beautiful…Beautifully Simple quilt designs. Her fusible appliqué techniques are fun and surprisingly easy while often looking beautifully detailed and complex. McKenna is known for her broad range of themes representing the many things she loves: the north woods, the sea, and animals—from the farm to cats and dogs.

After she creates her textural fabric prints, McKenna painstakingly hand-crafts her quilts piece by piece, from initial drawings to appliqué to quilting, creating a true artisan original. Her easy-to-follow patterns make her art accessible to everyone. McKenna’s original works of art can be seen at her showroom in Portland, Oregon. McKenna's quilt In Full Bloom is shown right. Find McKenna's website at pineneedles.com.

WestSide Modern Quilt Club: TransitionsIn past years, this group has brought you three exhibits: The Bridges of Portland; The Pearl District; and most recently Tribal Winds. This year, the exhibit by this talented group of quilters showcases Transitions. Members challenged themselves to give a fresh, modern twist to time-honored patterns. This exhibit is a wonderful way to showcase that what is old is also new.

Cathy Erickson: Baltimore Quilts Go ModernCathy has loved Baltimore Album quilts since the early 1990s. She is also madly in love with modern quilts. This exhibit combines both! You’ll see a wonderful selection of traditional Baltimore Album quilts along with Album quilts from Virginia and Pennsylvania featuring over-the-top appliqué. You’ll also see Cathy’s modern quilts. They capture the beauty and spirit of early Baltimore Album quilts with a contemporary twist. A close-up of Cathy’s B is For Baltimore is shown at right.

Treadle Machines: A Working Historyof Our Sewing HeritageSponsored by Boersma’s of McMinnville, this exhibit will showcase rare and valuable sewing machines seldom seen on display. You’ll even get a chance to sew like grandma did on these complicated machines. It’s a once in a lifetime opportunity to see such a collection!

Linda Reinert: Playing in the RoundLinda has been sewing almost as long as she could hold a needle. She became interested in quilting in the early 1990s and it has been her passion ever since. After discovering circles in 2004, they have become a theme that has dominated her work. Linda will share many of these quilts in her exhibit Playing In The Round: Circle Quilts That Dazzle. Shown above: Linda's quilt The Sky is Falling.

Threads on the Edge: Friends of TulaEach member of this quilting group selected a color on the color wheel. Each color was assigned to a month. When a member’s month arrived, that member chose five fabrics with varying values of their color and gave out small amounts to the other members. They also chose five blocks from the book 100 Modern Quilt Blocks by Tula Pink. That month, all members made the selected five blocks using the same five fabrics—sometimes using additional fabrics. When the year was done, each member had made 60 blocks with twelve colors, then assembled and quilted their blocks as they wished. The result is 12 distinctly different quilts created from the same fabrics and the same block designs. A glimpse of what you will see is shown at right.

Members of Threads on the Edge are Becky Bollinger, Jacque Ervin, Claudia Evers, Candy Fullaway, Michelle Hermann, Jean Kelly, Judy Liebo, Dianne McDonnell, Liz McElhinny, Lisa Roberts, and Jan Shipman.

Reach for the StarsThis exhibit, curated by Dawn White, is made up of stunning star sampler quilts based on Terri Krysan's Reach for the Stars quilt featured in Quilter's Newsletter Magazine. Inspired by Dawn’s version—Catch a Falling Star—on display at The Pine Needle in 2014 (shown above), local quilters gathered at the quilt shop over the space of a year to work on their own versions.

Virginia Hammon: Passacaglia and the Money QuiltPortland quilter Virginia Hammon researched and wrote the upcoming U.S. Money, a book that explains how our money system works, why it needs to change and how to do it. She illustrated her book with a hundred different quilt blocks, picked for how their names illustrate the text, and a collection of quilts that use the blocks. This is the world premier viewing of the book's quilted illustrations.

The collection includes a quilt made with the Willyne Hammerstein pattern, Passacaglia, called Wheels of Commerce with thousands of fussy cut pieces relating to money and our economy. (Detail shown above.) Another of Virginia's show-stoppers, All That Glitters is Not Gold, is made with over-the-top sequined fabric. Virginia’s Seeds of Life, quilted by Coleen Barnhardt, won a blue ribbon for machine quilting at the Pacific International Quilt Festival in 2016.

Laura Heine

We are offering several classes for you to learn Laura’s collage techniques! You’ll create a rich, one-of-a-kind quilt.

Floral collage: fused flower motifs cut from fabric and arranged on a foundation within a silhouette. You’ll learn how to create your quilt with attention to color, value, and the use of large, medium, and small scale floral motifs.

Painterly collage: strips and a palette of solid-appearing fabrics.

Choose one or more of Laura’s classes, then visit her website to purchase your fabric kits and patterns. Laura wants you to have success in class, so this is mandatory for all students, with no exceptions. Your order will be shipped to you prior to class. Everything can be found on Laura’s website fiberworks-heine.com under ‘Collage Kits’ and ‘Collage Patterns.’ Keep in mind that as fabrics become unavailable, the fabrics in the kits will vary.

Laura has won many national awards for her work. She is an author, fabric designer, thread designer, pattern designer, and teacher, and travels all over the U.S. teaching her techniques. Her collage quilts and technique have attracted national and international interest. Laura has had her quilt shop, Fiberworks, in Billings, Montana for 25 years.

Swan Amity SheridanSwan lives in Corona de Tucson surrounded by the beautiful Arizona desert. She has been quilting since 2002, when she discovered that fabric and thread were her creative outlets. Now hardly a day goes by that she is not creating new designs, choosing fabric, or taking up the needle to make something that wants to escape her head. Appliqué is her true quilty love, but she has an affection for all methods and no desire to be limited. Free motion quilting has added excitement to her work in the last several years.

T3000 or F3300Organic Machine QuiltingOffered twice. Expand your free motion quilting skills on your home sewing machine. Swan will focus on using the three basic elements of free motion quilting (lines, curves, and circles) to build a variety of designs. You’ll get detailed information about preparing quilting surfaces, tools, timing, and control. Prepare to take on the exciting world of modern machine quilting with a variety of simple techniques that will open the box to expanded concepts of machine quilting!

W3300 or S3300Divide and Conquer Machine QuiltingOffered twice. This class is a beautiful follow-up to Swan’s Organic Machine Quilting class. Building on skills you’ve learned for making a variety of quilting shapes, you’ll learn how to break up a quilting space and use foundational elements to create quilting frameworks. You’ll learn several foundation techniques for free motion quilting, and then work on a sample project in class.

TH3300Watercolor for QuiltersTake the fear out of fabric painting and reveal your inner artist with Swan’s simple technique. You’ll learn to use Derwent’s Inktense blocks and pencils to create a dry watercolor image. Using water and fabric medium, you’ll then transform the dry image into a permanent watercolor. Suitable for creating backgrounds, appliqué cutouts, personalized fabric, or complete images, this method is easy and accessible.

Esterita Austin

T/W4000Fabric AnimalThere is nothing like an expression of unconditional love from your animal best friend. In this two day class, you'll create a visual memory in fabric that you will want to keep forever. See the online supply list for instructions on how to get a good photograph of your pet. Skill level: beginner and up.

TH/F4400Luminescent Painted IllusionEsterita’s original technique allows anyone to succeed, even if you’ve never painted before! In this two day class, you’ll use fusible web to transfer your original painted imagery to organza using metallic acrylic textile paints. This process is unlike any other printing process; it is not a reverse process…what you see is what you get. This makes it a breeze to incorporate words and numbers into your design if you like. You’ll use a printed photograph of a favorite place, facade, architecture, or interesting still life for inspiration and interpretation. To ensure success, please email Esterita, [email protected], with your digital image before class for input on subject matter and to help pick the best image before printing. In this class, it’s better not to use people or pets. Skill level: beginner and up.

S4400Coloring Book FlowersCreate luminous watercolor irises with a fluid and intuitive technique. Using fusible web, a pattern and paint, you will easily transfer your image to organza. Anyone can master this process; you don’t need to be an artist to succeed! Skill level: beginner and up.

Esterita is known for her portraiture and stone series, and her innovative paint transfer technique. Her quilt The Well was a prize-winning piece in the NYC American Museum of Folk Art’s international competition. Esterita’s work has been published in numerous periodicals and books, and she teaches nationally and internationally.
