PLAZA BICENTENARIO The concept characterizes this place for having the ability to be a multipurpose space, dynamic and didactic. It consist on 200 spread, joined or arranged, hole lightweight steel columns to commemorate two hundred years of Mexico’s independence.

The site is located in the heart of Monterrey, Mexico, surrounded by historical buildings and a green axis where diverse type of cultural activities happen.

The project also consist con having prefabricated wall and ceiling panels that fit together with the columns, with the intention of hosting di-verse settings such as a market, a gallery, a concert and many other public activities to make a space in constant evolution.

The columns are set in a grid of floor openings making the space able to be in constant change depending on the pro-gram or activity as well the ap-ertures have also the purpose to get natural light to the park-ing with a temper glass lid in the empty spots and air circulation through the columns holes.

Each column represents a year since

Mexico´s Independence, it includes a fragment

of printed history that makes it didactic.

PROTOTYPE X

The site is a large polygon (1.5km x 2.0km) located in the center of Monterrey, Nuevo León, México

The design of an inner city in Monterrey envisioning the future in search for complete interdependence between the users.

concept

The concept of prototype x is to socially regenerate the city by creating an equilibrium and interdependence between the users. This prototype aims for the city to be completely independent from the outside world and extremely dependent from the inside, where people’s aptitudes are enhanced to produce labor effectiveness and at the same time to fulfill the necessities of others.

To make this social regeneration work, punctual detonators are needed, where values are added to existing ones creating a reaction to produce compact nodes with mixed programs that have an attached correlation.

experimentTo know the location and spatial relationships between these nodes, an in-vestigation of natural sciences such as physics, chemistry and biology was applied analyzing different behaviors resulting on an ideal urban system. After an extensive research, the chemical reaction of effervescence was adopted because of its great advantage to iterate using the tablet form, as well because it covered the urban intentions of the project, such as chain connection, active and static spaces etc.

A voronoi diagram is a decomposition of a metric space determined by distances to a set of points in space, creating equidistant lines and nodes between them.

The bubble’s perimeter is determined by the radial force the air creates inside of it. When two bubbles with the same pressure interact with each other without joining, their limit is right in between them, just as the voronoi tessellation creates equidistant lines between the desired points.

The cells created with the 3D voronoi system lead to a new conception of retail space going from squared meters to cubic meters, having the capability of joining depending on the program that it might occupy. This flexibility allows users to hang, attach, or arise from the existing structure making it more efficient on the way the cell gets occupied.

The master plan of PROTOTYPE X has the main objective of creating a social regeneration, so the relation between nodes need to be bonded by the proper urban elements. This model seeks for the users to have an interdependent relation, the program is distributed in a parametric way, responding to social aptitudes and to user needs. The voronoi tessellation was adopted because of the specific mathematical spatial relation it cre-ates between points, linking the nodes in a precise way.

Streets are buried at diverse sections to keep the green axis free from traf-fic noise and air polluting.Color lines represent ways running along level zero.The rest of the voronoi network is proposed as pedestrian to promote coexistence between the users.

The main existing streets are prolonged through the inner city flowing along the voronoi path making them the primary roads.

Along with the primary roads, a another street is added that runs trough the site in a perpendicular way (as a vertical axis) , working as a principal distributor along the inner-city.

Secondary streets link the main ones to the nodes, most of them being underground in order to reach the parking system below.

A tram runs longitudinally along the site with stops located at strategic points between nodes, ending at the existing metro stop in “Washington” street.

Static spaces read in the experiment turn into a green axis that flows in between the nodes articulating them to boost cycling and walking.

ARCATENOSIQUEThe design of a whole system responding to one of the principal regional problems, flood, generating paths and spaces that configures between each other. The project emerges from both ends of the river creating a network of connections that allow great flexibility between the different programs that will house the network carrying the proposal to a formal rationaliza-tion that allows creating a great sensory impact on the user as well as a lighthouse tower observatory giving the city a visual reference.

The form of the bridge is a response to the interaction between the three differ-ent programmatic axis: cultural, accom-modation, recreational. the user has the opportunity to circulate on a single pro-grammatic axis or to vary his way shifting paths along the run.

The building is a system that arises from the containment of flood water in times of being self-sufficient when a hydroelectric plant and a water treatment. On the basis of a condensation system along the river comple-mented by a linear park, the plant channels water and turns it into drink-ing water for local residents.

The idea of the Fashion Museum The concept of the Tokyo fashion museum should be described by a sense of perception a visitor experiments on a given tour of the instalation, in which he is transported in time and space.

PARAMETRICFACADE SYSTEMAA Visiting School @ CCA San Francisco

Byodinamic is the study of the force and energy of dynamic processes on living organisms. Through simple mechanisms embedded within the material logic of natural systems, specific stimuli can activate a particular response. Investigating biomimetic principles in order to analyze, design and fabricate prototypes that respond to electronic and environmental stimuli. Advanced analysis, simulation, modeling and fabrication tools where introduced in order to apply this information to the design of both passive and active responsive architectural systems. Application of robot-ics, sensors and actuators where employed for the activation of the mate-rial system investigation through the construction of working responsive prototypes.

The nave used to be a buss terminal, and then remodeled by SOM to be an art institute.

The facade had light con-trol issues, that had to be solved.

the systemThrough our research in biological systems that responded to particular stimuli, we decided to study the symbiotic mutualism that the clown fish has with the sea anemone, providing us with the possibility to create an artificial system to produce complex behavior. Being the user and the environmental conditions the trigger for architecture to be performative.

design processA series of prototypes were made for us to bring biomimetic patterns into our design proposal. From simple plastic straws to acrylic tubes, we went through a process of mechanic movement iterations that defined the optimal displacement of our components for our system to behave the way we wanted, giving us information for our digital model that was able collect data and to perform on a 1:10 scale prototype built with sensors and motors that made those movements possible.

how it works?We developed a parametric facade based on the mechanical movement of the sea anemone’s ten-tacles, the proximity of the user and the environ-ment conditions that surrounded the building. Bringing us the opportunity to create a respon-sive system that would shift through the day by interacting with people as well as the heat and light conditions protecting the building’s interior.
