TØYENLØKKA 60503 Mixmasterplan, master landscape9. semester, AHO 2014Main course leader: Iwan Thomson
Project site: Tøyenparken, Oslo.
The Tøyen park is a large green space on the east side of Oslo, aproximately one kilometer north-east of the central station. The almost-connected green spaces consist of the Oslo botanical garden, the Ola Narr area, and the cantral part of the Tøyen park itself, but the different spaces is separated by both physical and mental barriers and borders. Finnmarksgata, the road that cuts through the park, is part of the ringroad system and carries a heavy traffic load with approximately 8.500 daily (AADT). It has recently been temporarily closed for car traffic due to a municipal trial project.
The areas surrounding the green spaces houses inhabitants of great diversity. In Tøyen, the tendency is that the inhabitants struggle with both economical and social problems. Meanwhile, 10 minutes walk away, the inhabitants in Lille Tøyen Hageby are living in one of the most attractive areas in Oslo. This contextual diversity is the base for a potential in creating connections for people to both travel and meet.
The project introduces a new centrality, a central puplic transport system and a overlaying generous pedestrian and bicycle system. Most importantly it attempts to discuss how we can use landscape design to re-invent how we percieve roads like Finnmarksgata. The road itself is given a new dynamic form, subordinate to the human use of the park. A new landscape overpass the road before the road becomes a plaza, where the design attempts to inform the drivers that they are now traveling on pedestrian premesis.
AHO AWARDS WINNERExellence in transportation architecture
EXISTING DISCONNECTION
The area between the botanical garden and the central part of the park cause a disconnection in the green structure.
CIRCLE = UNITY
Unity and connection is expressed through a circular shape.
ELEVATION / SUBMERGENCE
The landscape is lifted above Finnmarksgata, so cars can pass underneath.
NEW CENTRALITY
A new and generous plaza space is placed in the middle of the new landscape, creating a new meeting place, and opportunity for public transport. The cars will have to slow down when driving through the plaza.
CULTURAL / COMMERCIAL CIVIC SPACE
A new cultural institution will be incorporated into the landscape, mostly submerged under the new landscape, providing new cultural and commercial activity to the park.
CULTURAL / COMMERCIAL CIVIC SPACE
The landscape is lifted to create space for the building, and still preserving walkability on the surface. The entrance will be faced out towards the plaza.
TOPOGRAPHIC ADAPTION
The surface is adapted to the existing landscape, maximizing walkability across the surface.

TEMPORARY / FLEXIBEL SPACE
Flexibility/temporality is one of Tøyen parks biggest qualities, which is important to preserve, maybe even improve.
The Øya festival is an example of one of the great temporary events taking place in the park. The Tøyenløkka project also aims to improve the flexibility in what temporary events can take place in the park space.

60600 Hyper Landscape Urbanism8. semester, AHO 2014Course Leaders: Kelly Shannon and Marianne SkjulhaugOther office members: Gauthier Durey, Eric Reid, Kari Tønseth, Heidar Smari Hardarson, Mette Sørensen and Ingrid Fallet.
Project site: Ca Mau, Vietnam.
With the two major contemporary problematics of climate change and accelerated urban growth and urban mutation in mind, we worked in two “offices”. The course included several workshops with prominent guests like Pierre Belanger, CJ Lim and Sebastian Marot, and a month long field trip to Ca Mau, Vietnam. In Ca Mau we presented our field work to members of the planning department of Ca Mau, and our final project was presented to the norwegian ambassador of Vietnam. As the Vietnamese delta landscape is about microtopography, our office focused on solving the design in sections. The projects design is meant to be a startingpoint for posing critical questions, instead of coming with answers. This project won Statens Vegvesens AHO prize for exellence in transport architecture, and featured as one of ten projects receiving an honorable mention from the 2014 landscape biennale in Barcelona.
Ca Mau is a small city located in the Mekong delta in the south of Vietnam, an area threatened by increasing sea waterlevel, and an inclination of the land due to groundwater pumping for agriculture. A shift from waterbased infrastructure to roadbased infrastructure is adding to the future difficulties of Ca Mau.
The core in our design proposal features a double layered aquaduct fed by greywater and rainwater filtered through new wetlands. The aquaduct will also carry a transport system, and motorbike lanes for safe travel, as well as being placed on safe ground, working as a new urban and civic spine.

Project site: Kjelsrud, Oslo.
Oslo will be an applicant for hosting the winter olympic games in 2022. In light of this, Kjelsrud in Alna city district in Groruddalen has been selected by Oslo municipality as one of two possible sites suitable for building the olympic village. It has been named as the most risky option, but also as the site with the most potential for improvment. The keyword here is legacy. What happens after the games is what is the most important.
Today Kjelsrud is a very problematic site. Most of its area is in use by either industry or important infrastructure like highways, local roads and railroad. The microclimatic conditions are bad, both the air, water and the soil is polluted after decades of industrial use and being the location of dumpsites. It is a place for the car, not for the human being.
As Oslo is the fastest growing city in Europe, it is natural to think of Kjelsruds future as being a part of the urban city. But if Kjelsrud is to be a livable place in the future, a lot has to change. My goal is to design Kjelsrud for the future, and to change some fundamental elements. Kjelsrud has become a wrinkly old man, and this project attempts to rejuvenate him.

MAPPING SUMMARY
The green structure in this area is scattered at seemingly random spots, except along the open parts of the Alna river.
This mapping of overlapping systems of landscape shape and aerial quality shows that the cold air flow stagnates over Kjelsrud. This creates a cold, humid and polluted air quality that is not recommended for habitability.
A very high percentage of the area in Kjelsrud is in use for industry.
The Alna river is in pipes underneath the Alnabru terminal.

Topographic landscape
The landscape in Grorudalen is declining in a southwest direction. The moraine crossing the valley on Alfaset is an important part of this landscape, greatly affecting the microclimate in Alna.
The Alfaset moraine is blocking and redirecting the cold air flowing down the valley and from the hillside on quiet days. The cold air flows down the Alna river valley.
Strømsvegen is creating moderate air pollution, while the E6 highway is creating heavily poluted air.
The E6 highway is of high importance in this area. So is the railroad with the Alnabru terminal. Strømsvegen is an mportant local road along the valley, and Nedre Kalbakkvei provides an important local cross-connection.
Cold air flow Air pollution
Infrastructure
By pouring steam created by dry ice through a model with exaggerated elevations, I investigated the impact of the terrain and built structures on the cold air flow. It was evident that the steam in a large degree stagnated on Kjelsrud because of the glacial moraine.
I experimented by implementing different housing structures, but it did not have a big impact on the flow of the steam. What had a big impact was altering the terrain. By lowering parts of the Alfaset moraine south of Kjelsrud, the steam could flow freely on both sides of Alfaset.

The cold air flow will be polluted, primarily by the E6 going by the park. It is therefore vital to have a layer of vegetation to absorb gases like CO2 from the airflow, releasing cleaner air in the bottom of the park. A mix of evergreen and desidous trees native to the Oslo area will ensure a filtering effect all year around. While the cold air effect is usually most severe during the winter, and the soil may be quite moist in this area, a majority of spruce.

HJALLISPARKEN LAA215 Konstruksjonsdesign6. semester, UMB 2013Kursets hovedleder: Ingrid Merethe Ødegaard
