and deatH From incorrect groUnding Wire connection: Check with a qualified electrician if you are in doubt as to whether the outlet is properly grounded. do not modify the power cord plug provided with the tool. never remove the grounding prong from the plug. do not use the tool if the power cord or plug is damaged. if damaged, have it repaired by a service facility before use. if the plug will not fit the outlet, have a proper outlet installed by a qualified electrician.

grounded tools: tools with three Prong Plugs

Tools marked with “Grounding Re-1.quired” have a three wire cord andthree prong grounding plug. Theplug must be connected to a properlygrounded outlet. If the tool shouldelectrically malfunction or breakdown, grounding provides a lowresistance path to carry electricityaway from the user, reducing the risk

Page 6

of electric shock. (See 3-Prong Plug and outlet.)

The grounding prong in the plug is2.connected through the green wire in-side the cord to the grounding systemin the tool. The green wire in the cordmust be the only wire connected tothe tool’s grounding system and mustnever be attached to an electrically“live” terminal. (See 3-Prong Plugand outlet.)

The tool must be plugged into an3.appropriate outlet, properly installedand grounded in accordance with allcodes and ordinances. The plug andoutlet should look like those in thepreceding illustration. (See 3-ProngPlug and outlet.)

double insulated tools: tools with two Prong Plugs

Tools marked “Double Insulated” do1.not require grounding. They havea special double insulation systemwhich satisfies OSHA requirementsand complies with the applicablestandards of Underwriters Labora-tories, Inc., the Canadian StandardAssociation, and the National Electri-cal Code. (See outlets for 2-ProngPlug.)

Double insulated tools may be used2.in either of the 120 volt outlets shownin the preceding illustration. (Seeoutlets for 2-Prong Plug.)

extension cordsGrounded1. tools require a three wireextension cord. Double Insulatedtools can use either a two or threewire extension cord.

As the distance from the supply outlet2.increases, you must use a heaviergauge extension cord. Using exten-sion cords with inadequately sizedwire causes a serious drop in voltage, resulting in loss of power and pos-sible tool damage.(See table a.)

The smaller the gauge number of the3.wire, the greater the capacity of thecord. For example, a 14 gauge cordcan carry a higher current than a 16gauge cord. (See table a.)

When using more than one exten-4.sion cord to make up the total length, make sure each cord contains atleast the minimum wire size required.(See table a.)

If you are using one extension cord5.for more than one tool, add thenameplate amperes and use the sumto determine the required minimumcord size. (See table a.)

If you are using an extension cord6.outdoors, make sure it is marked withthe suffix “W-A” (“W” in Canada) toindicate it is acceptable for outdooruse.

Make sure the extension cord is prop-7.erly wired and in good electrical con-

Page 7

dition. Always replace a damaged extension cord or have it repaired by a qualified electrician before using it.

Protect the extension cords from8.sharp objects, excessive heat, anddamp or wet areas.
