The Effects of Toxic Personalities: Dealing with Difficult People (7 hrs.)Difficult people are difficult on purpose…they have learned over time that others will try to manage or even tolerate their bad behavior. The effects of a toxic person can be damaging and long lasting. They can cause physical and mental distress in others, ruin personal and work relationships, and encounter legal and social difficulties that involve other unwilling participants. High conflict individuals often experience personality or mood disorders, anxiety, and uncontrolled anger issues. Does this sound like somebody you know? If so, learn how to create boundaries, identify stress triggers, defend without becoming defensive, use appropriate humor, develop resilience, and disengage with mindfulness and acceptance. Standard ways couples hold title to property or name beneficiaries can cause the “old” and “new” family members to be at odds and can even cause an unintended disinheritance. This workshop outlines the unique challenges and specific strategies of which blended families need to be aware to avoid planning gaps and conflicts. Attendees will leave with an understanding of the core legal directives every family should have to protect the people and things they cherish.

The Truth about Estate Planning (aka Estate Planning Essentials) (1.5 hrs.)Everyone has an “estate plan” whether they know it or not regardless of whether their assets are generous or modest. It occurs every time you create a joint title on a deed or name a beneficiary on an account. Effective estate planning involves creating a combination of directives, from wills, trusts, and healthcare proxies, to authorizing others to manage affairs during incapacity and at death. The number and type of directives can be complex or simple, depending on your needs, goals, and budget. The key to good estate planning is making sure your plan is complete and understanding how each directive supports or undermines your overall intentions. Plans with gaps or conflicts can require court involvement to dictate what happens to you and your affairs. Attendees will learn about the core directives every person should have to protect themselves. They will get an overview of the various legal directives used in estate planning and the role each plays in an overall estate plan—whether the plan is geared toward protecting minors, avoiding nursing home costs, or saving estate taxes. They will leave with a worksheet that helps them rate their existing plan for effectiveness.

Nuts & Bolts of Trusts (1.5 hrs.)Trusts can be one of the most useful and cost-effective legal tools to help people maintain control over their assets during good health, illness and at death—without court costs or delays. Unfortunately, most people, including financial advisors, only think of trusts in terms of saving estate taxes. While this is one benefit of trusts, trusts can also provide many more protections such as shielding inheritances for beneficiaries with failed marriages, bad judgment, creditors, or special needs or those with business interests. This workshop gives an overview of how trusts work, the pros and cons and costs, when to consider using trusts and what should be included in the trust provisions. It covers the Trust Protections SpectrumTM and various asset protection options trusts can provide during the trustmaker’s and beneficiaries’ lifetimes.

Special People, Special Planning 1.5 hrs.)This workshop will provide an overview of the fundamentals every family needs to consider when planning for the future of a person with special needs. Attendees will learn about federal disability programs; guardianships; wills, trusts, and the essential legal directives the family must have as well as the consequences of failing to formally plan; how to keep the plan current; and the reasons for “letters of instruction”. Attendees will understand the types of advisors to consult, what to ask and how to organize information to ensure their plan will take care of the future needs of the loved one’s special needs.
