Business Manager’s Report

The holiday season is upon us. As I celebrated Thanksgiving with my family, I couldn’t help but to be reminded of the many blessings that we share as citizens of the United States and members of the United Association; blessings that were afforded to us by the sacrifices of many. Because of those who fought to keep us free and those who fought for workers’ rights, we are able to celebrate.

GIVING BACK The Christmas season is also known

as the season of giving. If there is one thing that I have learned over my 30 years as a member, it is that we take care of our own. At our November Meeting a motion was made to allocate $4,000 to assist those in need at Christmas time. The motion was unanimously approved. As in the past, we will begin with members who are in need and then reach out to the community.

I would ask that anyone who knows of a member who could use some assis-tance, please call the Indianapolis office so a representative can contact them. If you yourself are in need please don’t hesitate to call and accept your Brothers’ and Sisters’ help.

As a member of Local 440 you should be very proud in the many ways that our resources help our communities. When the Ronald McDonald House approached us for donations, you stepped up. When wounded warrior Tim Senkowski was in need of an accessible home for himself and his family, you stepped up. When Rebuild-ing Together needed volunteers to renovate homes of the less fortunate and elderly, you stepped up. I could go on and on.

I would like to recognize brother Ralph (Boomer) Culver on the latest way in which we are giving back. Boomer has organized a care package campaign for our Troops. He has engaged the apprentice classes and his fellow instructors in the col-lection of items to be packed and shipped for the Holidays. At his request, a motion was made and approved at our last meeting for the shipping costs. Huge thanks go out to Boomer and Alice for coordinating the

campaign which Boomer has appropriately named “Filling the Foxhole”.

AIL MAILING AND BENEFITS Local 440, through approval of the Executive Board, entered into an agree-ment with American Income Life (AIL) that includes a $3,000 Accidental Death & Dis-memberment Policy for each active member of Local 440. The group policy is free of charge and requires no obligation on the part of the member.

The only requirement of our agree-ment was to allow the mailing of a letter an-nouncing the accidental death and dismem-berment benefit. The initial letter was mailed from Local 440 in August and included a reply card that could be returned if a member was interested in additional coverages from AIL. There is no obligation to return the yellow reply card. If you do complete and return the reply card, a representative from AIL will contact you to discuss the many benefits and discounts they have to offer. They are a Union company and have partnered with many local unions over the years. There will be a second and final mailing after the first of the year. Again remember that you are under no obligation to reply. If you do not reply, the $3,000 ac-cidental death and dismemberment benefit will utilize your beneficiary on file with Local 440 and we will coordinate the benefit with AIL.

CLOSING As we continue through this holiday

season it is my hope that you are able to en-joy time with family and friends; to step back from all the “noise” and share in this glorious time of year. I look forward to a prosperous new year for all. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year from my family to yours!

At the time of this writing we are seeing our typical seasonal slowdown; however, the prospects for 2015 are bright. The work coming in the spring, not only here at home but on the road as well, is looking very good. Everyone should try to maintain your OSHA-10 and if it is more than 3 years old maybe get it renewed. While the certification never expires, many customers are requiring it to be less than 3 years since you took the classes.

As we are all getting older and retirement is fast approaching we need to think about what we will do after we retire. It is estimated that in the next few years 50% of the existing workforce will retire. After getting up every day and heading to work, most retirees look forward to slowing down, having more time for what interests them and not having to squeeze everything into a few hours at night or rushing around on a weekend.

But for some, their career is their identity, and breaking up with their job is hard to do. Co-workers are their social network and providing for the family is their purpose. Some retires feel adrift and can’t seem to enjoy the time they now have on their hands, even though this is what everyone says that you work towards. There is good news however. Retirees who find they feel lost can, with a little effort, work their way out of the funk.

When most people think about retirement, it is mostly about savings and so forth. Keep in mind that if you are reasonably healthy you will spend almost as much time retired as you did working. Many miss the social aspect of working or as it has been said, “sitting around the big wooden spool” at break and talking with each other. There are many organiza-tions that are looking for not only people with the skills we have in our trades, but also the life skills we have learned along

the way. After finding some direction many have said they didn’t know when they had time to work with as busy as they are now.

Volunteering is a great way to give back to the community. We have been blessed with good wages and fringes and it should be our goal to give back. Become a mentor, or volunteer at a hospital. Some find it comforting to become more active in their spiritual life.

The social part of retiring will increase as well if you reach out. You will find new people if you volunteer and contacts will come into your circle. Keeping in touch with old friends should still happen, and with all the so-cial media out there it takes very little effort. Reach out and make a phone call - what an archaic tool - and meet for a meal. Many will look for a part-time job just to keep themselves busy. Don’t feel pressured to fill all that time and find something that is the right fit for you. If you force something to fill the void you won’t enjoy it and it prob-ably won’t stick. Our culture puts a lot of emphasis on working but there is much more to life than working.

In closing, it has been a tough couple of years but there is a bright new year fast-approaching. Take time around the holidays and spend time with family and friends. Remember those less fortunate. Take a moment to remember those in the military serv-ing this great country as well as those who served their time and returned home. Take a separate moment to remember those who made the ulti-mate sacrifice. From myself and my family, here’s wishing all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year.

Season’s Greetings to all,

As we move into the Holiday Season I hope your Thanksgiving was an enjoyable one with plenty of good food and that you enjoyed the company of family and friends. I had a memorable one, having a chance to see and visit with my family. It seems that nowadays, at least for me, we get busy with work or just day-to-day life and we may not have time for our loved ones as much as we would like. Hopefully during this season you will have opportunity to be with your loved ones and spend some quality time with them.

As we are turning to winter I hope it will not be like last winter with heavy snow and subzero tempera-tures. I hope that we have a better spring, and don’t set record lows in July and below-freezing temperatures in November.

Travel work has slowed down some. The shutdowns at Lima and Toledo have wound down. There is

some opportunity for work out there, but you may have to travel further than you may be used to. If you’re willing to go, please let us know and we will do our best to place you.

Work in the East is somewhat slow. Current projects and those starting up will take on more hands after the first of the year. Ball State has ongoing projects and a new hotel planned and Ball Hospital is going through a large remodel on one of the towers. In addition, Delaware County is planning energy-saving projects on a few buildings. As we know, it’s slow-going when projects start in November and December, but they will get there.

All-in-all the work outlook is looking up in the East territory. There are other projects in the planning stage for next spring and summer that we are following closely. With the work we have now and the proj-ects coming up it looks like 2015 will be a good year.

Wishing you a Safe and Happy Holiday.

Work on the Westside remains steady. Here are a few of the projects in progress and on the drawing board for 2015.

BMWC has several projects going at Eli Lilly. A couple of these should take some additional man-power, through the end of the year. Both of BMWC’s carbon steel and stainless steel fab shops seem to be busy. BMWC looks to be busy in our jurisdiction through 2015.

Shambaugh and Son picked up a nice job at the Lilly Tech Center. This project should take a few hands

between now and the first of the year. They have a steady crew working in our area on several different projects. As the economy picks up, hopefully Shambaugh will in-crease their presence in our jurisdiction. Over the 38 years that I’ve been around, there have been several times when it seemed like S&S had all the work in town.

Freitag-Weinhardt has several projects ongoing. They have work at In-gredion, Eli Lilly and Belmont WWTP.

Bowen Engineering also has several projects ongoing in our area, the largest of

which is the Southport WWTP. Engineering changes have set our end of this job back several months, but this job should start to ramp up for us late in the first quarter of 2015. As the weather lets up, this project will take pipefitters and welders, keeping them busy for several months.

Travel Card work has been outstand-ing for the last two or three months. We have many friends in the Midwest who have helped us greatly. A special thanks to the Indiana State Pipe Trades Locals for all of their help this year!

Looking ahead to the next couple of years, work in our jurisdiction should be the best it’s been in six or seven years. Upcoming projects include IPL’s conversion of units 5, 6, and 7 at Stout Power Plant to natural gas, IPL’s new combined cycle power plant in Martinsville, and continued work at Eli Lilly. The new Marion County

Criminal Justice Center and Com-munity Hospital renovations are among other major projects on the board. There is also the possibility of a huge hospital project combining IU Hospital and Methodist Hospital.

For a change I am optimistic that the coming years are full of op-portunities for Local 440’s members and their families. At this time I would like to wish each member and their family a safe and happy holiday season and a prosperous new year!

Pictures for the outdoor sec-tion would be greatly appreciated.

Work in the South is still holding steady. Cummins has work at all of the plants and there should be some shutdown work over the holidays. I am expecting Honda to do a shutdown over the Christmas holiday as well. They have started moving dirt at the site for the new Major Hospital in Shelbyville and as long as the weather holds out that project should progress through the winter months as well. The Eagle Valley Powerhouse should start hir-ing in the late spring with the manpower peaking out sometime late fall or early winter of 2015.

A little on the political side, the super majority of the Republicans has grown de-spite our best efforts to get the Democrats elected. I can assure you that we are all working on forming relationships with the newly-elected State Reps and Senators to

make sure that we still have a voice in what is happening in our state.

I would like to take this time to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season. I hope that everyone takes the time to slow down and enjoy some quality time with fam-ily and friends. So from my family to yours, wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosper-ous New Year.

Brothers and Sisters:

I would like to start this month’s article out by saying; I do have deer meat in the freezer but I don’t have my buck tag filled yet! I hope everyone has had a productive hunting season and is ready for the Holidays. Old Man Winter will be showing his face here before long and I hope you all are ready for it. I am as ready as I can be I guess!

I would like to take a minute to talk about politics. We didn’t fare too well this time in the elections, but we did get a couple of our members elected! A big congratulations needs to go out to brother Brandon Bowman and brother Frank Schonfeld for getting elected to their respective school boards. Thank you brothers for going out and beating the streets to get elected. If you see these brothers out on the street or on a jobsite give them a pat on the back for their hard work and dedication!

Now on to the work picture. Work in the north is holding its own with the projects going on in the Chrysler plants. There are also several Chrysler

projects being talked about for next year with expansions in Tipton, KTP1 and ITP1. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that they decide to move forward with these projects. It looks like Newjac is picking up a little work with some recalls that are coming in. They are also continuing to bid several fab projects. If we can just get through this winter, spring work is looking good for our whole jurisdiction!

On to travel card work. I would like to take this time to say a big thank you to all the brothers and sisters taking care of business out in Cedar Rapids at the fertilizer plant. I have received sev-eral compliments from the BA out there on what a great job we are doing. Keep up the great work and thanks for repre-senting Local 440 the way you have!

In closing I want to wish all my brothers and sisters a safe and happy holiday season. I know you all are as excited as I am to spend some quality time with our families! Be safe and enjoy your family!

Don BoughTrainingDirector

Brothers and Sisters,

It’s way too early in the season to dislike winter this much. As much as I hope not, maybe the Almanac is right in that we’re in for an even worse winter than last year. I hope all the deer hunters had a safe and successful season and filled the freezers. If you have some extra meat that might go to waste I’d be happy to help you out.

We continue to offer Med Gas up-date classes which include proctoring of the required update test. NITC allows the update to be completed up to 1 year after

expiration to renew your certification without retaking the class and the original test. No-tices including applicable expiration dates have been to all certified members. It looks like there could be some more hospital work coming soon and the med gas certification could mean employment. Please call the training office with any questions.

Registration is ongoing for the next Industrial Rigging Certification class and NCCCO Signal Person class. The Signal Person class will be held on Wednesday and Thursday evenings beginning at the end of

January. Industrial Rigging will follow at the end of February and will be held on Satur-days. This is a great opportunity to acquire certifications that will be required for the IPL Martinsville project. Call the training office to get signed up!

The design of the new training building is nearly complete and we should enter the construction phase soon. The completion is scheduled for the end of April so we can get things ready for a grand opening that will co-incide with the District #2 apprentice contest. Speaking of the contest, it is scheduled for the first week of June and we will need some retirees to volunteer to help with various tasks throughout the week. It’s a great event so contact me in the spring if you want to come out and help. I want to take a moment of privilege to challenge all members. We all need to re-member where we came from and the basics of apprenticeship. At least 80% of the learning

process is done on the job. That means that we are all responsible to teach the trade to the apprentices. I understand that job budgets are tight, but if we don’t invest the time in training our apprentices there will be no one to carry on our strong tradition of excellence. On the contrary, if we all do our part the UA will be here to support our families for generations to come.

I leave you with this quote:“Those who don’t know must learn from those who do.” ¯ Plato

Don’t forget to buy American at every opportunity ! ! !

I would like to wish all members and their families a Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year for 2015.

General President William Hite

A Special Holiday Message from General President Hite

As we gather with our families to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday, we reflect upon the many blessings we enjoy as Americans and as members of the United Association. We give thanks for the blessings of freedom and opportunity that previous generations worked so hard to secure, and we express our unending gratitude for our families, friends, neighbors, brothers and sisters who fill our lives with joy throughout the year.

This holiday season, we also recognize the importance of giving back. We honor all those serving our nation far from home so that we might live in peace and security. We also thank the first responders and all those who work through the holidays to keep us safe, and acknowledge all of the volunteers who help make the holidays better for those who are less fortunate. During this season of giving, let us do our part to share our blessings with others.

On behalf of the entire United Association, thank you for your hard work and dedi-cation to our great union. We have a lot to be thankful for as members of the UA, and I know that I am grateful for the privilege to serve as your General President.

My best wishes to you and your loved ones for a safe and enjoyable holiday season.
