In 2009, New Holland and its dealersstarted to invest more in precisionfarming and got the idea of building aRTK cluster.
A RTK cluster is a group of strategicallyplaced reference stations, designed todeliver single-baseline RTK coveragewithin a certain area. The idea of a RTKcluster has quickly been adapted acrossEurope and is still growing today.
RTK Clusters
RTK (Real-Time Kinematic) is a proventechnology used for positioning in real-time at cm-level. RTK makes GNSS(Global Navigation Satellite System)a very efficient tool for a variety oftasks such as precision construction,precision farming and other tasksrequiring precise real-time positioning.
Traditional RTK is a single-baselinesolution between a reference stationand a rover unit. In the late 1990’s,RTK became a reliable, mainstreamtechnology for surveying andconstruction.
History of RTK
In 2003, farmers began to use referencestations in their daily precision farmingactivities. Most of the stations wereoperating in remote areas based onUHF/VHF radio transmission, proven tobe very reliable for RTK technology andfree of charge.
PLM Connect RTK
Early RTK networks began to appearin 2004, which appear similar to RTKclusters. However, the new PLMConnect RTK network infrastructureis much more complex than a RTKcluster.
RTK networks provide a RTKcorrection based on all of thereference stations in the network,meaning that the density of referencestations in a RTK network is less thana RTK cluster.
Reference station data is processedinto one European RTK network beforebeing distributed to the users. RTKclusters typically use UHF/VHF radiotechnology, whereas PLM Connect RTKnetworks typically use mobile phonewireless networks for communications.
The machine will send its approximateposition to a data center, which will sendback a correction for your position. Thiscommunication will take place everysecond.
Today, New Holland owns the biggestRTK cluster network worldwide,which covers hundreds of millions ofacres. This means that the customercan reduce his costs of implementingthe precision of RTK on his farm.
