Conceived by Carl Grose, Charles Hazlewood and Mike Shepherd Created by the Company Based on the play by Alfred Jarry

4 – 8 FEBRUARY

We all know an Ubu. That deranged dictator we all love to hate!

Impossibly greedy, unstoppably crude, inexorably daft and hell-bent on making the country great again! Sound familiar?

A Leeds Playhouse production By David Greig Director James Brining

25 JAN – 15 FEB

1942. The Warsaw ghetto. Sixteen year old Adzio is stealing to survive. Invited to escape the streets by Dr Korczak, Adzio must learn to live harmoniously with the other 200 children cared for in the orphanage, where he’s safe for now.

But Dr Korczak is nervous despite his influence in the ghetto. Rumours are spreading about people being moved out of the city on trains and not coming back. Tempers and temperatures are rising, food is scarce. Everyone wants to survive.

Experience this powerful and enduring true story of Dr Janusz Korczak. This production is supported by The Linbury Prize for Stage Design. The biennial Prize, the most important of its kind in the UK, brings together the best of emerging designers with professional theatre, dance and opera companies. The Linbury Prize for Stage Design is funded by the Linbury Trust.

Based on Alfred Jarry’s riot-inducing masterpiece, Kneehigh will let rip with their own version of theatre’s most anarchic creation. Expect world-class buffoonery in this deliriously unhinged promenade musical. Featuring some of the most iconic anthems of our times, given a fresh rub for their money by a belting Kneehigh band, plus an extraordinary choir of extras – you! – we guarantee this will be a rocking, rollicking riot of ridiculousness that you won’t forget.

He’ll rise! He’ll reign! Only together will we make Ubu fall!

Burberry Inspire is a pioneering four-year programme giving Key Stage 3 students from 8 schools across Yorkshire creative and inspiring experiences that they wouldn’t normally have access to.

In September 2019, Leeds Playhouse were excited to begin the second year of Burberry Inspire working with Co-op Academy Leeds and The Ruth Gorse Academy.

So far, experiences have included street dance master classes, a collaborative Year 9 Performing Arts project led by artists in residence, and a trip for students to see The Wizard of Oz at Leeds Playhouse. In the new year the journey continues with after school clubs, puppetry making workshops and lessons in stage combat.

In July 2020, students from all Burberry Inspire schools will perform at Leeds Playhouse, in a cultural runway designed to showcase their skills.

‘We are a huge school that is growing. We do a lot of drama and performance already but the type of work we do is largely dictated by the curriculum. Working with Leeds Playhouse we were able to do some more experimental pieces.’ Teacher, South Craven

‘It was amazing. What a show! I’ve been blown away by what the students have produced.’ Audience feedback, Cultural Runway
