Spring is a time for re-birth and WNIT celebrates the season with several major initiatives. On March 19 — two days before the vernal equinox — WNIT premieres the latest of its local productions, “Experience Michiana.” The program will be broadcast every weekday on 34.1 at 6:30pm and on WNIT InFocus 34.2 at 8pm. This exciting project is made possible by our newly remodeled facility and is another example of our delivering on the promise of the Center for Public Media. Broadcast personality Gordy Young hosts the program, which features local news, reviews of music, movies and performing arts, lively interviews with Michiana headline-makers and behind-the-scenes looks at popular Michiana hot spots. It’s WNIT’s magazine-of-the-air and promises to enrich the lives of viewers of all ages and interests.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention month and WNIT will present a three-part series on this important and sensitive topic. In mid-April we will broadcast two live, town-hall-style meetings featuring a panel of experts and an audience of concerned citizens, hosted by Gary Sieber, Kelly Morgan and Amanda Ceravolo. The two programs are each an hour in length and will address “Recognizing and Reporting” child abuse in the first and “Consequences” of child abuse in the second. A third program, an episode of our regular ASK AN EXPERT series, will address issues raised in the first two programs as well as those asked by viewers calling into the program.
Also in April, WNIT will again partner with the St. Joseph County Public Library as part of its ONE BOOK, ONE MICHIANA event. The title of this year’s book is “The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes” by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and three of its stories will be discussed as an episode of our popular DINNER AND A BOOK with Gail Martin and her guest, Doug Farmwald. The dinner portion of the program, Gail promises, will be a “Sherlockian treat.”
Speaking of our new facility, our Community Room continues to provide valuable meeting and discussion space for the community. It has tables and chairs to accommodate about 70 persons and is available for your business or organization at a very reasonable fee. For more information, please call or email the station and ask about our Community Room. We’re also happy to provide tours of the facility for your club or group. The tour takes about half an hour and is available at no charge.

GREAT PERFORMANCES: The Phantom of the Opera at Royal Albert HallTo mark the 25th anniversary year of “The Phantom of the Opera,” Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh presented the musical in a lavish, fully-staged production in the sumptuous Victorian splendor of the Royal Albert Hall. Audiences were in-vited to join the celebration, which was broadcast to theatres around the world. Stars Ramin Karimloo (The Phantom) and Sierra Boggess (Christine) were joined by Barry James as Monsieur Fir-min, Gareth Snook as Monsieur André, Liz Robertson as Madame Giry and Wynne Evans as Piangi, together with a cast and orchestra of more than 200 in-cluding special guest appearances.
“The Phantom of the Opera” first opened in 1986 at Her Majesty’s Theatre and is based on the French novel “Le Fantôme de l’Opéra.” The show has been seen in 145 cities in 27 countries, played to more than 130 million people and won more than 50 major theatre awards, including seven Tonys and three Olivier Awards in the West End. It is currently showing in London, New York, Buda-pest, Las Vegas, and Kyoto. In 2006, it became Broadway’s longest-running show ever.

PETER, PAUL AND MARY 25TH ANNIVERSARY CONCERTWednesday, March 14, 10pm PETER, PAUL & MARY 25th ANNIVER-SARY CONCERT features songs that became the soundtrack of their generation. In an era in which folk music became America’s messenger of hope, Peter, Paul & Mary sounded a call to conscience that remains an enduring part of our national quest for equity and justice. Songs include such timeless classics as “Puff, the Magic Dragon,” “If I Had a Hammer,” “Blowin’ in the Wind,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone?” and “Leaving on a Jet Plane.”

ANTIQUES ROADSHOW “Honolulu” (Hour Three) Monday, March 19, 8pm Before ANTIQUES ROADSHOW can pack up its trunk and wave aloha to Honolulu, Hawaii, host Mark L. Walberg and appraiser Anthony Slayter-Ralph pay a visit to Shangri La, home of the late heiress Doris Duke and one of Hawaii’s most architecturally signifi-cant homes. Objects to be appraised include a first edition copy of Jack London’s “Call of the Wild;” a 1915 Hawaiian flag quilt, bearing the coat of arms of King Kamehameha; and a vio-lin and bow purchased for the owner’s aunt in 1921 and kept in storage for the last 40 years.

INTO THE DEEP: AMERICA, WHALING & THE WORLD: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, March 20, 8pm ; Friday, March 23, 9pm ; Saturday, March 24, 8pm For two centuries, American whale oil lit the world — powering the start of the industrial revolution and laying the groundwork for a truly global economy. From its stunning rise as an economic force in the 18th century to its precipitous decline in the decades following the Civil War, the whaling industry mapped millions of miles of uncharted ocean, opened new seaways and markets and employed the world’s most multi-cultural workforce.
NATURE Wednesdays, 8pm “Survivors of the Firestorm” – March 21The bushfires that tore through the Australian state of Victoria in February 2009 inciner-ated over a million acres of land, including key mountain ash forest ecosystems. Fires are a natural force of nature that spur regeneration, but the immediate aftermath of this giant fire-storm was devastation. Kangaroos and koalas, wombats and wallabies, endangered possums and gliders, lizards, echidnas, birds of all kinds, and even fish that lived among these euca-lypts were overcome by the flames.

Whales and dolphins remain a constant source of fascination. But how much do we re-ally know about them? NOVA Wednesdays, 9pm “Extreme Ice” – March 21 As the world warms, the threat from rising sea levels poses an alarming potential for disaster. Some models now project a one-meter sea level rise over the next century, which could displace millions of people, from Florida to Bangladesh, and require trillions of dollars’ investment in coastal infrastructure. But these models don’t reflect recent findings that gla-ciers in Greenland and Antarctica are melting at an ever faster rate.

FINDING YOUR ROOTS Sunday, March 25, 8 & 9pmThis 10-part series, with the renowned cultural critic and Harvard scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., delves into the genealogy and genetics of famous Americans, combining history and science in a fascinating exploration of race, family and identity in today’s America. Profes-sor Gates shakes loose captivating stories and surprises in the family trees of Kevin Bacon, Robert Downey, Jr., Branford Marsalis, John Legend, Martha Stewart, Barbara Walters and Rick Warren, among many others.
FENWAY PARK AT 100 Monday, March 26, 10pm and Tuesday, March 27, 8pm FENWAY PARK AT 100 celebrates the cen-tennial of the oldest (and smallest) ballpark in America. Using a Red Sox/Yankees game as a thread, the film tells the story of Fenway’s long history as a venue for sports and as a pub-lic space: masses for WWI soldiers, a 1922 Irish Republican rally, FDR’s last presidential campaign speech, concerts by Bruce Spring-steen and others. A decade ago, it looked as though Fenway would be largely destroyed and replaced with a new ballpark. Luckily, wiser heads prevailed and one of Boston’s most pop-ular attractions, and a landmark for baseball fans everywhere, survived.
TRIANGLE FIRE: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, March 27, 9pm and Saturday, March 31, 9pm On March 25, 1911, a fire broke out in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in New York’s Greenwich Village. The blaze ripped through the congested loft; huge piles of trimmings fed the flames. Petrified workers desperately tried to make their way downstairs, but the fac-tory owners kept the doors on the ninth floor locked, and the woefully inadequate fire escape soon crumpled. Hundreds of horrified on-lookers arrived just in time to see young men and women jumping from the windows. By the time the fire had burned itself out, 146 people were dead.
QUEST FOR THE LOST MAYA Wednesday, March 28, 10pmQUEST FOR THE LOST MAYA explores archaeological evidence of a previously un-known Mayan society based in the Yucatan Penisula of southern Mexico. The film surveys their dramatic rise to prominence in the “pre-classic era” (800-700 BC) of the Maya, as well as new evidence of the collapse of their civiliza-tion in the 800-900s AD.

“The Mystery of Edwin Drood” – April 15An adaptation and completion of Charles Dickens’ last novel, left unfinished at the halfway mark at his death, The Mystery of Edwin Drood is a psychological thriller about a provincial choirmaster’s obsession with 17-year-old Rosa Bud and the lengths to which he will go to attain her.
“birdsong” – April 22 and 29This adaptation of Sebastian Faulk’s best-sell-ing novel about lovers torn apart by World War I stars Eddie Redmayne (“The Pillars of the Earth”) as Stephen Wraysford, whose pre-war affair with Isabelle Azaire (Clemence Poesy, Harry Potter) has an enduring effect on him as he fights in the trenches.

AMERICAN MASTERS “Margaret Mitchell: American Rebel” Monday, April 2, 9pmDiscover the Pulitzer Prize-winning author behind “Gone With the Wind,” one of the world’s best-selling novels that features two of the world’s great lovers — Scarlett and Rhett — and was adapted into one of the most popu-lar films of all time. No ordinary writer — or woman — Margaret Mitchell was a charismat-ic force who challenged the stifling Southern social order and struggled with the changing role of women and the liberation of African Americans.
“Harper Lee: Hey, boo” Monday, April 2, 10pm and Saturday, April 7, 9:30pm Explore the phenomenon behind “To Kill a Mockingbird” and the mysterious life of its Pulitzer Prize-winning author, including why she never published again. The documentary reveals the context and history of the novel’s Deep South setting, and the social changes it inspired after publication. The popular film version, starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch, leaves an enduring image for the novel’s message.
GRAND COULEE DAM: AMERICAN EXPERIENCETuesday, April 3, 8pm Grand Coulee was more than a dam — it was a proclamation. In the wake of the Great Depres-sion, America turned from private enterprise to public works — not simply to provide jobs, but to restore faith. The ultimate expression of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal, Grand Cou-lee played a central role in transforming the Northwest; it was the largest hydroelectric power producing facility in the world when it was completed in March 1941.

HOOVER DAM: AMERICAN EXPERIENCE Tuesday, April 17, 9pmRising more than 700 feet above the raging wa-ters of the Colorado River, it was called one of the greatest engineering works in history. The Hoover Dam, built during the Great Depres-sion, drew men desperate for work to a remote and rugged canyon near Las Vegas. There they struggled against heat, choking dust and peril-ous heights to build a colossus of concrete that brought electricity and water to millions and transformed the American Southwest.

NATURE Wednesdays, 8pm “River of No Return” – April 18The Frank Church River of No Return Wilder-ness is a protected wilderness area in Idaho and the second largest contiguous area of protected wilderness in the continental United States. LIDIA CELEbRATES AMERICA Friday, April 20, 9pm and 10pm The second in a series of four PBS specials with celebrity chef and culinary author Lidia Bastianich continues the celebration of culture through food with a focus on the traditions surrounding weddings — an African-Amer-ican wedding in New Orleans, classic Indian wedding dishes, including tandoori specials, seafood kebabs and a variety of Indian breads, a Korean-American wedding and the marriage of two cultures — Irish-American and Italian-American, with music and food from each represented.
THE CRASH OF 1929: AMERICAN EXPERIENCETuesday, April 24, 8pm On October 29, 1929, the lifelong dreams of hundreds of thousands of stock market inves-tors — middle-class secretaries, clerks, small businessmen — vanished in a few hours, along with their hard-earned savings when the stock market crashed. This program examines the economic boom before the crash, whether the crash was predictable and if it precipitated the Great Depression of the 1930s.

Now, with the help of new spacecraft and Earth-based telescopes, scientists are seeing the sun as they never have before and even re-cre-ating in labs what happens at the very center of the sun.

Child abuse — the very words are painful and full of emotion.
April is National Child Abuse Prevention month and WNIT is proud to take part
in this effort by co-hosting a series of programs that deal with this difficult topic.
Called “Child Abuse — Our Silent Crisis,” this three-part series includes two
town-hall style broadcasts and one episode of “Ask An Expert.”
Child abuse prevention professionals from throughout Michiana will be called upon
to lend their expertise and experience to these programs, which are co-hosted
by Gary Sieber, Kelly Morgan and Amanda Ceravolo. Here’s the schedule of our

On Monday, March 19, WNIT will launch its newest production, “Experience Michiana.” Popular local broadcast personality Gordy Young will host the program, which will air Monday through Friday at 6:30pm on 34.1.
“Experience Michiana” is a half hour magazine-style series that highlights our region with daily information and insights regarding the economy, political issues, outdoors and nature, as well as culture and the arts. It’s informative and entertaining, providing a fresh experience for the whole family.
For younger viewers, there are segments that spotlight electronic games and DVD reviews, nature and outdoor exploration, even dating dos and don’ts. We’ll feature places to hang out, area schools and young people who are making a difference.
For adults there will be political discussions, health and wellness features, financial segments, music and movie reviews as well things to do and places to see as the weekend approaches. Features will include Michiana Behind the Scenes, a look at some of the well-known venues in our area and how they function. We’ll explore such spots as Potawatomi Zoo, restaurants, art galleries, theaters and more. WNIT will also partner with a local news station to bring viewers highlights of the day’s news stories. Elected officials throughout the area will speak about issues affecting their regions.

Production News
The WNIT engineering staff keeps the signal on the air and looking good. They maintain everything from TV cameras to TV transmitters, from computers to diesel generators, from heat pumps to video tape recorders, and often have to do it on short notice after hours.

Director of Broadcast Operations
Prior to joining WNIT in 1997, he spent ten years with WSBT Radio and Television as an engineering supervisor and seven years with WNDU Radio and Television as a staff engineer as well as consulting for several local radio stations. He is a 1981 graduate of IVTC and a 1991 graduate of Bethel College with degrees in Electronic Communications and Organizational Management.
Mike Kauffman
Engineering Supervisor
Also joining our staff in 1997, Mike came to WNIT via WSBT Radio and Television, where he worked for 24 years as an engineer and engineering supervisor while running his own two-way radio installation and service business and doing consulting work for several local radio stations. He is a 1968 graduate of Lake Michigan College with a degree in Electronics Communications.
Tom Szawara Staff Engineer
Tom joined WNIT in early 2009, previously spending 17 years with WSBT Radio and Television as a staff engineer and several years with Nortel as a central office equipment technician. He is a graduate of ITT Technical Institute.
Tim Crothers Staff Engineer
Tim also came to WNIT in 2009, having previously worked as an engineer for WNDU Television for 22 years along with engineering positions at Crown Broadcast and Mor/Ryde in Elkhart. He is a graduate of Valparaiso Technical Institute.

Directors’Circle
The WNIT Directors’ Circle represents a very dedicated and select group of individuals who, by their commitment, contribute to the total annual support which is the foundation of WNIT’s operating budget. These essential annual contributions make possible the great programs that everyone in Michiana enjoys.
Jill Richardson
Jill Richardson was raised in Elkhart County, taught in the School City of Mishawaka corporation and later joined the board of Urban Youth Services in South Bend. She began her service on the board of the Elkhart County Community Foundation in 1997, served on the Child and Parent Services (CAPS) from 1999-2007 and joined the WNIT Board of Directors in 2007. Jill has served on the Governance Committee, co-chaired the Revenue Raising Task Force and is currently a member of the Talent Show Task Force.
Director of the Welter Foundation, Jill has contributed to the WNIT Capital Campaign, is a Directors’ Circle member and is involved in fund raising for the regional mobile unit. WNIT salutes her leadership and fund raising support on behalf of WNIT.
