PolyurethanePolyurethane Elastomers are manufactured from basic raw materials(Polyols, Isocyanates and Cross Linkers), which are supplied by theChemical Processors. They arrive as thick pastes, which have to be warmedup to melt them to liquids, before mixing them in various ratios, then castingand curing to produce the finished elastomer.

The base materials are carefully controlled by the suppliers, and arrive in acontrolled condition. At PE, the materials are then kept in controlled (heated)conditions prior to use. While good quality base materials are essential, without controlled & correct processing of these materials, the finalproperties of the materials can be poor, with no cosmetic difference.

The trouble is that, poorelastomers can lookexactly the same as perfectones.

The raw materials need to be very carefullycontrolled in all during their processing life. The melting out period and temperaturemust be carefully controlled, the mix ratiosmust be formulated according to thespecification of the raw materials, whichmay vary from batch to batch, the mouldtemperatures must be specific, and the postcuring temperature and times, again, mustbe tightly controlled.

There are also various types ofpolyurethane elastomer used in the PiggingIndustry. Pipeline Engineering call themStandard, Super and Hyper Omnithane®.The differences between them are asfollows:

Page 10: Pipeline Engineering Brochure

PIPELINE ENGINEERINGApplying Science to the Art of

Pigging

Standard Omnithane® is a good quality, polyester based, MDI Quasipolyurethane. For many years, Pipeline Engineering bought the rawmaterials from Hyperlast, and over the years have proved that, as a generalpurpose elastomer for pigging products, provided it is processed correctly,it is a quite acceptable. However, it has one major drawback in that whenrunning in dry gas lines, usually with low volumes, the pig can accelerateperiodically, creating friction and so melting of the polyurethane, sometimesfrom within the body of the elastomer. This is the result of hysterisis, andPipeline Engineering have found different methods of overcoming thisproblem. One answer is to use Hyper Omnithane®, (described below), thathas a more constant Tan Delta curve than Standard Omnithane®, and canwithstand higher temperatures. However, this option is both expensive andsometimes not necessary for the application, so PE Investigated the problemand devised a new system, with a higher Resilience (resilience being one ofthe key aspects of controlling hysterisis). Following extensive testing, thisnew material, supplied by a company with a long track record with PipelineEngineering, has been incorporated into PE's product as StandardOmnithane®. Not only is its Resilience higher, but also its Tear PropagationResistance, while other physical properties remain equal or slightly betterthan the old Hyperlast product.

Super Omnithane® takes the physicalproperties one step further, especially inTear Initiation, Tear Propagation and WearResistance. It was used on the Yachengcontract, the pigs running almost 800 kmsin a dry line, without significant wear. It isalso used in some High Differential Pigs, &dual diameter pigs due to its excellent tearresistance properties. However, it isnotoriously difficult to process by handcasting methods, and extreme care overthe whole process must be exercised toensure that the final product is tospecification. Like all polyurethane, thefinished elastomer can look perfect, cangive a shore A hardness figure withinspecification, but the other properties, unless processed correctly; can fall farshort of specification. (For more on this

subject see below).

Page 11: Pipeline Engineering Brochure

PIPELINE ENGINEERINGApplying Science to the Art of

Pigging

Hyper Omnithane® is the very best polyurethane elastomer in the marketfor pigging applications. It is a TDI, Polyester based urethane, crosslinkedwith a special Amine, to a special formulation discovered by PipelineEngineering some years ago. It has proved itself in many applications, notably in very difficult run conditions, (the Ekofisk 36” High Differential Pigs, which were sized to suit a pipe id of 915mm, but had to negotiate a reductionto 800mm, were made from Hyper Omnithane®. They were run after othermanufacturers cleaning pigs, to clean the line before the isolation train, andran about 150kms in a dry line, bringing out tons and tons of debris. This, after the other cleaning pig runs! The actual High Differential Pigs were runas a train of 3 articulated units, and held 9 barg as a train, each articulatedunit holding 3 bar).

Having said all this, there is one key point to bear in mind as mentionedbefore, the polyurethane elastomer can look and feel perfectly OK, but theONLY way to prove this fact is to run actual physical tests on the processedpolyurethane, produced for the contract. It is not good enough to rely on theChemical Manufacturers specification sheets, which give the optimumproperties of the elastomer, when processed under completely controlledconditions, which many manufacturers do not constantly replicate in theirworkshop.

CONCLUSION

Purchasers buying polyurethane elastomers are somewhat in a difficultposition they can issue a specification with the enquiry, which will be in linewith the physical properties issued by the Chemical Suppliers, but thePurchasers do not know that what they are being given is to thisspecification. A Certificate of Conformity tells them nothing.

To reiterate, the ONLY way to prove thespecification of the finished product is to runphysical tests on the elastomer actuallyproduced for the contract. Pipeline Engineeringhas the facilities in house to do this. Samples ofthe elastomer are cast at the same time as theproducts, from PE's Computer ControlledDispensing Equipment, and, following curing, are tested for properties in the laboratory. Onlywhen the tests are passed can the product bereleased. This proves that the supplied productis to specification.

Multi Diameter Pigging

The ability to pig Dual and Multidiameter pipelines offers the operator huge potential savingson piping costs and enables a growing number of offshore marginal fields to be exploited. The technique also allows use of smaller diameter risers for deep-sea projects.

Pipeline Engineering and Supply have developed a new Dual Diameter pig which is both costeffective and yet highly efficient for pre-commissioning, routine operations, pre-inspectioncleaning and towing an inspection pig even with high drag. This development has pushed theboundaries of what is safely feasible in such technology and allows the operators moreflexibility in the design of their pipeline. A fundamental requirement for a pig that musttraverse more than one pipe size is that it must have seals that will provide the necessarydrive in each size. Pipeline Engineering’s pig can provide this.

Dual Diameter pig designed to negotiate Wye assemblies

The pig development allows changes in line size currently estimated at up to 60% increase.Typical diameters which can be address are 10” x 16”, or 28” x 42” for example.

The pigs design and development will be a bespoke product for eachapplication – all pipelines are different - and Pipeline Engineering canprovide advice, analysis and feasibility on the application as well asdesign, manufacture and testing. Currently all dual and multidiameter pigsof this step changes should be tested for conformity, but the current trendis to see them as standard products, thus making pushing large pigsthrough small pipelines child’s play!

PE spheres are moulded as a single seamless unit and cast in Omnithane®. Spheresare manufactured in a hardness range of 45 to 85 Shore A, determined by theapplication and internal finish of the pipeline.

Inflatable spheres incorporate an integrated schrader valve(s) moulded into the wallof the sphere. The valves are easily removed and replaced. A sealing cap can befitted to the valve housing prevents ingress of line pressure into the sphere.

Traverse

Spheres can be used in unidirectional or bi-directional pipelines and will pass mostfull bore fittings except gate valves. Where the side branch on tees is greater than25% of the pipeline diameter, the use of PE’s Sphere Flow Tees is recommended.

Configurations

Solid spheres are available in standard sizes between 1½” and 8”, and inflatablespheres from 3” to 48”. Spheres can be weighted or have magnets embedded andare available in FDA approved polyurethane for food industry and in potable watersystems.

Micro-Cellular Omnithane® Pig (MOP)Pipeline Engineering has developed the MicrocellularOmnithane® Pig (MOP) for commissioning and separation dutiesin multi-diameter pipelines.

Unlike conventional pigs made from polyurethane foam, the MOPdoes not have a tendency to collapse under high pressure, crumple or fold. The MOP is constructed from a special type ofmicrocellular Omnithane®, which has exhibited physicalproperties far in excess of the standard foam formulations. Thisprovides greater wear resistance so that one MOP can replacemany traditional foam pigs, and when its edges are coated with asolid elastomer polyurethane it works extremely well as aseparator.

The MOP has been designed to be capable of deforming up to a ratio of 3:2, allowingthem to be used in pipelines with significant diameter changes such as 12” to 8”. TheMOP is available from 2 “ to 48 “, larger sizes available upon request.

Sphere Flow & Barred TeesSphere Flow tees are used to ensure the safe traverse of spheres, foams metal-bodied and intelligent pigs across side branches and should be incorporated intopipeline systems whenever the diameter of the branch is 25% or more of thediameter of the main line.

Pipeline Engineering tees are designed to order and as with our other pressurevessel products, we are able to work to all international codes, including ASME VIII,B31.3, B31.4, B31.8 and BS 5500.

Each tee is built in accordance with the specified design code including radiographyand stress relieving if required. Tees are available up to 48” and ANSI CL 2500rating. They can be provided either flanged end, or weld end and can be fitted withextended pup-pieces as required.

Sphere flow Tees are constructed from a forged over sized tee, forged end reducersand a thorough pipe, equal to the main line pipe ID. The through pipe has a series ofslots positioned around the circumference; equal to 1 to 1.5 times the branchdiameter. This allows full flow through the branch, while allowing the sphere / pig tomaintain a seal at all times. The slots are designed to give minimum disturbance tothe flow through the branch line and allow safe passage of all types of pig.

Barred Tees can also be supplied to the same standards; which are recommendedwhere the branch diameter is above 70% of the main pipeline diameter.

We offer a full range of materials from standard carbon steels, stainless steel to moreexotic alloys such as Duplex and inconel, solid or overlay.

Pig SignallersStandard Signallers

Bi-directional mechanical/visual sphere and pig signaller complete withmechanical/visual flag. The unit is designed and manufactured at our registeredfacility on the Catterick Bridge Industrial Estate, Richmond, North Yorkshire.

Pipeline Engineering pig signallers operate on a mechanical magnetic principle whichutilises a unique, patented design where no dynamic seals are used.

In operation, a high powered magnet is lowered and raised on a spring loaded pistonarrangement which is totally sealed inside the signaller cap. Connected the internalmagnet is a spring-loaded bi-directional trigger which protrudes into the pipeline. Thesignaller cap is fitted with a spring-loaded flag to which a high power external magnetis attached. Once the flag is set in the horizontal plane, the external and internalmagnets form a strong magnetic attraction and the signaller is set.

Upon receipt of the pig/sphere the conical trigger is tripped which in turn lowers theinternal high power magnet. As the magnet moves downwards, its attraction to theexternal magnet weakens and the flag falls under the influence of the springarrangement.

Once the signaller has been activated, the trigger returns to its original position withthe assistance of the internal spring. The signaller flag has then to be re-set by theoperator.

KEY ADVANTAGES:

• No dynamic (moving) seals – very low maintenance• Can be removed while under line pressure• Bi-Directional Trigger• Cannot be operated by line pressure• Can be supplied with mechanical or electrical indication –

or both• Designed in accordance with ASME VIII Div 1• All wetted parts to NACE MR 01 75• Optional Adjustable Trigger• Wide range of materials available• Variations other than those below are available

Manufacture

Pipeline Engineering air bags are made by covering a natural rubber bladder witheither proofed canvas or nylon. This construction allows the deflated bags to bepassed through quite small holes in the side of the pipe. To suit pipe sizes up to 96 ”(2400mm) and in special circumstances larger bags can be made.

Application

Pipeline Engineering air bags can be used for a number of applications including:pipe testing, oil pipeline maintenance, gas pipeline maintenance, and drain testing.

It is generally accepted that the pressure, which a bag will hold back, depends on fivefactors:

1. The surface of the pipe into which the bag is to be inserted.2. The frictional resistance of the bag covers material.3. The total area of contact between bag and pipe.4. Whether or not a bag is supported.5. The pressure inside the bag itself.

It is worth noting that any physical support will dramatically increase the holdbackpressure.

Gas Seal StoppersPE’s gas seal stoppers are an effective way to seal low pressure pipelines, drainsand sewers against the inflow and outflow of gas, liquid or debris.

Manufacture

The units comprise a fabricated steel or aluminium body together with an inflatablenatural rubber tyre. All carbon steel components receive two coats of an anti-corrosion and chemical resistant paint.

Application and operation

As well as sealing off the pipe ends, PE’s gas seal stoppers can be used foremergency isolation while a repair or inspection is carried out. They are also suitable for creating a gas barrier to enable welding to be undertaken.Alternatively they can plug a drain while it is under water flowing conditions.

The pneumatically or hydraulically inflated seal can overcome ovality, irregularity anddiameter variations in the pipe. In use, the stopper is positioned in the pipe and thetyre is inflated with a hand or foot pump through the integral schrader valve fitted onthe body.

Configurations, sizes and pressure ratings

Gas seal stoppers are available from 4” – 60”, and with one, two, or three seals.Depending on pipe diameter, working pressures of up to 10 bar can be maintainedwith 3 seal stoppers, adequately strutted. Small caster wheels can be fitted aidinginsertion some distance down the line. A bypass port is fitted to allow pressurisationmonitoring and venting. Sizes above 18” can be supplied as split construction so thatthey can pass through a standard manhole.

Note: for lighter duties, PE has a range of drain plugs and rubber or canvas gasbags.

Piggable Hyperbaric SpheresFor sub-sea tie-ins on pipelines.

PE’s hyperbaric spheres are a critical item within the equipment spread necessary toperform pipeline tie-ins sub-sea.

Manufacture

PE’s hyperbaric spheres are constructed from three layers of polyurethane – a core,an intermediate seamless layer to provide strength and a softer outer layer to ensureabsolute sealing qualities. An internal tie-rod prevents excessive longitudinalexpansion and assists in increasing pressure between the pipe and the sphere, ensuring a tight seal in the pipeline.

Application and operation

The hyperbaric spheres are inserted either by diver or ROV into the open end of theline and positioned by removable handles. The spheres are inflated to withstanddifferential pressures of up to 3 bar. The welding habitat is sealed around the tie-inspool with the diving bell locked onto the habitat. The habitat is then pressurized withdiving gas so that the seawater is driven down out of the habitat allowing the weldingand NDT to be performed in a dry environment.

When the welding and NDT has been completed, the hyperbaric spheres are piggedout of the line. If undamaged, they can be re-tested and used again. If necessarythey can be returned to the factory for refurbishment.

Usually in harsh North Sea service a pair of hyperbaric spheres would be deployedon either side of each weld. In shallow water and more moderate environments, justone hyperbaric sphere either side of each weld may be used.

While we still manufacture the Hyperbaric Sphere for some clients, the Welding Pig(see next page) has generally superseded the Hyperbaric.

Page 46: Pipeline Engineering Brochure

Welding Pig

The Welding Pig from Pipeline Engineering is a new concept that takes the problemsout of pipeline welding operations.

Although conventional hyperbaric welding spheres have been used for many years, little has been done to address their inherent operational problems of poor piggabilityand the potential problem of weld “blow-out.”

The solution is the Welding Pig. It consists of two modules, each with a fabricatedsteel body and two disc seals, and each having the functionality of a hyperbaricwelding sphere. Two modules are required to affect a tie-in weld. One, the weldingpig, is fitted with a unique Omnithane® patented welding seal, developed by PipelineEngineering. When inflated, it pushes a flexible heat resistant backing materialagainst the underside of the joint to be welded. This reduces the volume of gas toalmost zero and removes the possibility of blow-back.

The modules can be installed either topside or in the wet by a diver or ROV. Onceinstalled the disc seals are inflated with water to hold 2 bar (diameter dependent)differential pressure. An annulus port allows the pressure between the seals to bemonitored during deployment. Having installed the modules the spools are drawntogether, leaving a 20mm gap between the weld faces. An inflation lance is insertedinto the welding seal and it is inflated. The spools are then drawn together to closethe weld gap. After welding the modules can be pigged out with the welding seal inflated. Theconventional design means the welding pigs perform as standard utility pigs duringrecovery.

Operators and contractors can use the Welding Pig with assurance alike. Modulardesign means the Welding Pig can easily be refurbished for multiple use, unlikeconventional hyperbaric spheres.

Hi-Friction PigsHi-Friction Stopper Pigs are offered by Pipeline Engineering to actas a primary pressure barrier, when the required isolation point islocated some distance from the launch, or access point. They havea number of features, which make them particularly suitable fortheir intended use:

1. Large diameters available – up to 56”2. Extremely hard wearing and reliable Hyper Omnithane®

seals3. Custom built for intended purpose4. Pigging allows access to remote work-sites

Hi-Friction Stopper Pigs are available in a range of diameters from4” to 56” and are capable of withstanding pressures up to 2 bard.p. depending on diameter. Fittings are available for gaugingplates and transmitters (for location purposes).

Typical applications include:

1. Acting as the primary barrier in a pig train. Acting as theinitial pressure barrier when undertaking hyperbaric repairs.

2. For valve change-out, or repair.3. For line repair, or alteration.

Page 48: Pipeline Engineering Brochure

PIPELINE ENGINEERINGApplying Science to the Art of

Pigging

Hi-Friction Stopper Pigs are capable of retaining a differentialpressure as a result of the interference fit between their disc packsand the pipe wall. Two carefully specified disc packs are used oneach pig – one at each end of the pig – with each pack being fixedto a welded steel flange which, in turn, is fixed to the tubular steelbody of the pig. Hyper Omnithane® polyurethane discs of identicaldiameter are separated by steel spacer flanges to form each discpack. The cumulative interference fit between the discs and thepipe wall is such that the radial force enables the pig to hold thespecified pressure.

Pumps incorporated into the pipeline system, capable ofpressurising the system to a point above the holding capacity ofthe pig or pig train. Once the pig begins to move lower pressurescan be used to keep it moving until it reaches the work-site whenthe pressure can be reduced until the pig stops.

This means that a train of several pigs of this type can be movedlong distances into the pipe in order to provide a primary barriercapable of withstanding a differential pressure up to a specifiedlevel (whilst allowing a margin for safety). This type of barrier istypically used to form part of a safe working system for diversundertaking sub-sea repairs in which they may use hyperbaricspheres to isolate the pipe at the work-site.

Because the pig is bi-directional, when work has been completed,it can be retrieved by returning it to the original launching point orpigging it down the pipe in the original direction.

High Pressure Piggable IsolationPlug from Pipeline Engineering…

… the Pigging ExpertsPipeline Engineering design, manufacture and supply arange of pigs, piggingequipment and isolation toolsto the world-wide oil and gasindustry.

The company recognised theneed within the industry toreduce costs in pipelinemodification and rehabilitationand so it developed apiggable, high-pressure isolation tool that avoids the need to fully drain orvent the pipeline during essential maintenance programmes.

The tool is ideally suited to many applications in the pipeline industry, including:• Valve change-out.• Fitting removal and replacement.• Pipeline diversion.• General maintenance.• Riser replacement.

Pipeline Engineering high-pressure isolation tools can be adapted to be deployed in any of thefollowing forms:• Fully tethered – controlled and monitored using umbilical hoses passed through the closure

door.• Control umbilical tethered – tool is connected to a single high strength monitoring cable.• Fully remote – the most versatile method of deployment, the on-board inflation pumps,

accumulators and valve switching equipment are controlled and monitored using ‘through wallcommunication’ low frequency radio transmitter and receiver that enables the operation to takeplace either sub-sea or topside, as far away as necessary.

Twin module piggable isolation tool

Page 52: Pipeline Engineering Brochure

PIPELINE ENGINEERINGApplying Science to the Art of

Pigging

DesignThe high-pressure isolation plug has been designed to be left in position during a construction ormaintenance phase during a shut-down for extended periods of time. Its construction is as follows:• 2 pigging modules made from PE’s own Hyper Omnithane®• 2 plugging modules containing:• Double block and bleed system fitted with grip rings and Omnithane seals (Omnigrip®)• Hydraulic systems• Low frequency radio transmitter and receiver (fully remote only)The Omnithane® seals have beendeveloped so that the tool can copewith differences in internal pipediameters of upto 80mm on diameter.

Deployment

The tool is loaded into the pig launcher at the end of the pipeline. The closure is then locked andpressure is applied behind the tool to pig the unit to the point of isolation. The pigging medium canbe either:• Inhibited seawater• Potable water• Water/glycol mix• Nitrogen gas• Pipeline product

Once in position the hydraulic systems on board the tool are actuated and the tool is ‘set’ - a sealagainst the pipeline pressure is formed. The tool is prevented from moving while the pipelinepressure is applied, by the use of high strength tool steel vice jaws, which grip the pipe wall.

Design codes

The high-pressure isolation tool has full DNV approval and certification, and the material stresslevels have been designed to be within design code BS 5500 Appendix K.

Pipeline Recovery ToolsThe Pipeline Recovery Tool (PRT) has been developed as a means of recoveringpipestrings at sea. A typical situation would be one in which a ‘wet buckle’ occurs asthe pipe is laid upon the seabed. In order to repair or replace the damaged section, the pipeline must be dewatered subsea and recovered to the laybarge. To carry outsuch an operation requires a tool which is capable of gripping the submerged pipe, internally or externally, with enough force to overcome the weight of the pipestring asit is lifted from the sea onto the barge.

The PRT is designed to be deployed, fitted and hydraulically energised by ROV whenused for subsea operations. Once energised, the mechanical jaws maintain their gripon the pipe wall, even in the event of complete hydraulic failure. The ROV thenattaches with winch wire from the barge to the safety hook on the PRT, using the pre-installed master line on the winch wire. The pipeline can then be recovered whilstthe ROV remains on standby.

The PRT has been carefully designed in response to a need for which alternativesolutions can result in far greater costs to the contractor. Many specialized featureshave been incorporated which have resulted in tools of unsurpassed function andreliability.

• Tools will operate in water depths down to 350m• ‘Hot Stab’ hydraulic connections, polyurethane guide noses and balanced

positioning handles have been incorporated to ensure maximum accuracy whenbeing manipulated by ROV.

• Valves and water-tight seals can be added for dewatering submerged pipelinesprior to recovery.

• Hardened vice-ring jaws are hydraulically energised while polyurethane de-actuating bands ensure that the jaws release when the hydraulic pressure isrelieved.

The PRT can be manufactured to suit a range of pipe sizes from 2” to 56”,

Manufacture

The body of the tool is made from carbon steel and the seals from PE’s proprietarypolyurethane, which is a low hysterisis formulation. The tools are fully tested andcertified prior to mobilisation.

Application and operation

The elastomer seal is expanded radially against the pipe bore, either mechanically(up to 6 ”) or hydraulically (8 ” and above) to seal off the weld area. The sealed areais then pressurized through the fill/pressurize port with either liquid or gas to therequired test pressure.

The tools are easily installed and removed. Testing is achieved in a fraction of thetime (and cost) of a full system test. Provision and disposal problems associatedwith the test medium are minimised, as are the pre-commissioning requirements aftertest completion. The tools can easily be installed and operated by one man.

Configurations, sizes and pressure ratings

The tools are available for both sale and rental in sizes up to and including 36 ” andin pressure ratings up to and including ANSI CL.1500. For equipment above 36 ”,CL.1500 and specialised applications, please contact our Sales Team or TechnicalOffice.
