DESCRIPTION

From 12th to the 14th April SERDE was holding a pinhole photography workshop led by Marcis Bendiks, one of Latvias most experienced photographers and a black and white master. The three-day workshop took participants through some of the theory relating to photography in general and to pinhole cameras specifically, as well as covering the practical side of building a pinhole camera. Participants designed and built their own cameras and developed the prints they take. Participants: Mrcis Bendiks, Raimo Lielbriedis, Imants kulis, Daniel Allen, Paulis Jakuonoks, Vineta Strauta, Margarita Ogolceva, Inese Austruma, Ieva Bleika, Hanna Sjoberg, Mielis Bendiks, Lsma Pujte, Sara Szabo, Inga Gailte, Reinis Fjodorovs, Zanda Treija, Elna Kisiele, Eva Saukne, Armands Ausmanis, Viljams Timrots, Tija Ausmane.

It forces even experienced photographers to think again about what photography is and what it means to them. The methods of pinhole photography are unusual and the equipment strange, but even for first-time pinhole photographers it can provide unexpected and beautiful results. Pinhole cameras are home made and so the proc-ess of photography involves not only taking photographs, but also the process of building the camera.

From 12th to the 14th April SERDE was holding a pinhole photogra-phy workshop led by Marcis Bendiks, one of Latvias most experienced photographers and a black and white master. The workshop was lead by Marcis Bendiks, one of Latvias leading photographers, and used SERDEs photo-studio and darkroom for both the theoretical and practical side. The partici-pants received a refresher lecture on the basics of photography, which led into further, deeper, discussion about the nature of light itself as it relates to pinhole photography. This information was then used by par-ticipants to help them design and build their pinhole cameras, which ranged in size from a matchbox to a box 1 metre square. All the re-quired materials, boxes, black paint, copper foil, tape, knives, needles, etc., were provided by SERDE. Further challenges were the unseason-ably dull weather, and low temperatures in the darkroom making the chemicals difficult to work with, although both problems were over-

come by Marcis experience and knowledge. Participants were able to make more than one camera and to take numerous pinhole pictures over the 3 days, learning about their cameras and refining their tech-niques as they want. There was an unusually high success rate for a workshop dealing with this experimental technique something like 80% of the pictures came out well, and everyone came away with sev-eral good pictures. The choice of which pictures to include in the final exhibition was very difficult!

SERDE

12

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

13Inga gaIlte Inese austruma

SERDE

14

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

15DanIel allen PaulIs jakuonoks

SERDE

16

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

17tIja ausmane

armanDs ausmanIs

SERDE

18

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

19zanDa treIja mIelIs BenDIks

SERDE

20

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

21vIljams tImrotselna kIsIele

SERDE

22

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

23Ieva BleIkalsma Pujte

SERDE

24

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

25vIneta strauta eva saukne

SERDE

26

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

27margarIta ogolceva sara szaBo

SERDE

28

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP / 2013

29

hanna SjobERg

Ad-hoc exhibition of resultsimage 1: Hanna Sjoberg; image 2: Reinis Fjodorovs

SERDE

30

PinholE PhotogRaPhy WoRkShoP WaS SuPPoRtED by:
