ONE GRAVE
One grave,Hidden in the depths of time.Forgotten by many.Covered by the shade of this sagging tree.Next to me a rich grave stands tall,Seen by none,I lie.The wooden ships passingWaiting to explore the rest of this newlycolonized countryAnd here I lie.The whaling ships moving swiftly down the riverGoing out to make a livingAnd here I lie.The fi rst stages of carsA few buzz the empty streetAnd here I lie.The new bridge and highway system.More and more cars screech byAnd here I lie.

HEIFER PROJECT
Over the weekend my main job was fi lling emergency water bottles for things like Hurricane Irene. Also, I had to empty some old bottles from March. When I fi nished fi lling the bottles, I helped clean my guinea pig’s cage. When we were fi lling his food bowl, the bag split and it all spilled. So, I had another job. It really made me realize how much we need water and how much responsibility an animal is. But I also love him very much, and the families that get animals from my money will have an animal to love as well. Nico Brown, Grade 5

SPECTACLE ISLAND
As I stand on top of the world on Spectacle IslandThe view takes me.An ocean with a blue so darkI feel as if I am walking through caves in France. The chill wind that blows through my hairRecalls oncoming fall.Puffy clouds that hang like mobiles about an infant’s crib. The sun that makes the dark ocean refl ect its mighty rays. The buildings that touch the infant’s mobile defl ect chillWinds of all, and mock the ocean with their height.Spectacle Island is on top of the world. THERE ONCE WAS
There once was a ladyby the name of Harriet Woodward…I don’t know where she’s beenOr what she’s done,But I’m sure she was an excellent woman. Her grave caught my eye,Only because it was shiningIn the bright, bright sunWith a small glimmer of engraved leaves bordering the stone’s faceThere once was a blank space here on this very spotBut ever since 1901 Harriet and her husband have been here in a deep rest…Their souls are soaring through twists and turns of the cool, crisp air.

If I didn’t have my legs,I couldn’t skate or jump in the lake with my two sisters. My legs are big and strong, tired and weakBut they are always there to help me compete.Jump, run, hop, and skipThese are the things I couldn’t miss. Skate, soccer, all those things I couldn’t have done it without my legs.

THE TIPPING POINT
I think I know what it wasWhat what was?It was a dreamDream? The one I had when I was back on Angel’s Landing. I know it was.The landscape was spread out the same way, like a painting. I was barefoot. The air was warm without weight. My toes curled around the warm rounded rim of the rock and I leaned forward.I felt the tipping point. The breeze rustled like angel’s wingsAnd?I fell. Just like thatJust like that?Just like that. And this was…?The tipping pointWhich is?The point where I lean forward and letgo of stress and deadlines and worries. The point where I don’t think anymore and just act. And I know what I do.What?I fall.

As I sit here in English classEveryone is quiet, but there is no silence
The scratches of pencils dancing on the paperWriting poems, stories and memoriesSounds like teachers at a chalkboard
The hum of the projector, projecting only a blank screenAlthough it works so hard, there is nothing to be seen
Students breathing like the wind on an autumn morningKeep the sound of life continuingThe rattling of the hot water urn
Sounds like a soft cymbal in a marching bankEveryone is quiet, but there is no silence
