A} Advantages of electric nature.The particular characteristic of the H. T. dischargewith electronic ignition in comparison with thetraditional ignitions, is essentially that to produce ahigher tension peak reached Ina very short time andwilh a shorter lolal lengl~ of the discharge ilself.It follows:- Engine regular running also with dirty spark plugsor with electrode gap not correct.- Better starting facility with cold engine.- Higher life of the spark plugs because of a smallerelectrodes wear.- Less possibilities of arc on spark plug.

B) Mecha.nlc advantages.The absence of the parts exposed to the wear - asthe contact breaker - came unit - allows:- Unalterability, during the time, of the ignitionadvance.- Insensibility to the atmospheric agents.- Regular engine running also to the high speeds.- Regular ignition running, also after large periodsof no use of the vehicle.To these advantages prevalently functional it can beadded, not less important, that one of an almost totalabsence of maintenance.

2) Device description.The fig_ 14shows the main component parts of thegenerator unit and the electronic device with H. T.coil incorporated (

The diagram of fig. 15,shows the component partsof the ignition system.The inductor generates on winding B an alternatingtension that, rectified by the diode D2 charges thecondenser C1. The unit pick-up P supplies, on thewished instant, the control signal to the diode(SeR); the latter, fired, realizes the discharge of thecondenser C1 on the primary of the ignition coil andhence produces on the secondary winding thenecessary tension for the spark to the sparking plug.

A) Informaciones generales.The checking or any operation on circuits of thedevices for electronic ignition can be easy carriedout: however it is very important to bear in mind thefollowing notices in thai, when not respected, thedevices can be irreparably damaged.All checking operations of the electric equipmentthat involve cable disconnections (checking of theconnections and of the devices that are componentparts of the ignition circuit) should be carried outwith the engine cut-out: on the contrary the electro-nic control box can suffer irreparable damages.Con seq uently it is very important to positivelyreconnect each cable to the corresponding tagwhen the cables have been dismantled or discon-nected respecting the different colours (see fig. 1B );on this purpose consult the electrical diagrams ofthe booklets "Operation and Maintenance".

On this chapter there are illustrated the mainoperations of disassembly which require specialtooling and expendients. Operations easily executedusing standard screwdrivers, wrenches, pliers etc.are not demonstrated.However we attract operator attention on necessityto correctly carry out the disassembly and reassern-bly operations of the different units, to avoidpossible deformations (for inst. bearing races, con-cerning housing, etc.).Notice - When specific notes are not Indicated theoperations carried out on this chapter are valid forall the models of the above mentioned vehicles.

The contact breaker points should start to open (onflywheels of traditional type, i. e. cast-in magnetsVespa 125 Primavera, Fig. 47), when the center lineof the pole shoe opposite to the keyway of the campasses the center l ine of feeding coil for H . T. coil by10-;-12.N. B . - Make sure that on the above mentionedconditions the contact breaker points gap is bet-ween 0.35 to 0.45 (flywheel "Plastiform" type) and0.40 to 0.50 (flywheel traditional type).Notice - The material of the ring magnet (Plastiform)of the rotor practically does not demagnetize andthen under no circumstances the ring of the rotorhas to be never remagnetized.Therefore the minimum efficiency should be asfollows:- Vespa 50 "Au - 50 Special ("Plastiform" flywheel):3 to 4 /.1 S. at 1500 r.p.m./5 to 6/.1 S at 4000 r.p.m.- Vespa 125 Primavera (traditional flywheel):2 to 5 /.1 S at 1500 r.p.m./S to 7 J .1 at 4000 r.p.m.

Terminal voltage of the headlamp bulb:With stabilized flywheels, i.e. units which havecompleted 10 hours of operation on the vehicle, withgood magnetic propertiers and efficient lightingcircuit, the terminal voltage at the single filamentbulb (Vespa 50 "A u - 50 Special) and at the mainbeam filament of the double filament bulb (Vespa125 Primavera - 125 ET3) should be as follows:

Vespa 50 "R" - 50 Special(6V - 15W single filament bulb).- ~ 4.4V at 2500 r.p.m.- 6.4 to 7.2V at 5000 r.p.m.

Con-rod small end overhaul.Substitution 01 small end bush (Vespa 50 "R" - 50Special) and Instructions for tooling use.The small end bush substitution is necessary if theclearance between small end bush and wrist pinexceeds the values given in the point fig. 42 ofpage 38.In this case go on as fallows:Dismantle the cylinder head, cylinder and piston:plug with fine paper or clean cloth the crankcasebore to avoid thai residual swarfs fall into thecrankcase and protect the cylinder mating surfacewith rubber or simillar material against possibleaccidental damages.Removal of the small end bush (Fig. 48)Mount on the can - rod, detail "A" of tool T. 0035732;insert the spindle "B", then fit the nut "C" on thethreaded end and screw to extract the bush.

Reassembly of the bush (Fig. 49)Place collar "0" part 6 of the tool T. 0035732, ondetail "A' , mount the new bush on the spindle "S"and operate as for dlismantling with the nut "C".

Crankshaft overhaulOperations for crankshaft overhaul and instructionsfor tooling useA cran kshaft overhaul is necessary if the clearancebetween con-rod-roller bearing-crank pin exceedsthe values given in the note of page 38.1) - Test preventively the shafts, and ensure thatthey are not so damaged to make the overhauloperation useless.2) - Immerse the parts in a descaling solution (typeHDS HOUSEMAN & THOMPSON LTD) at 900 to 950C for 20 minutes; then wash in runnlnq water.3) - Immerse the pieces into oil of the type"DEWATERING FLUID No.1".4) - Countersinq the crankshafts so as to ensurethat the same mating are remounted.5) - Separate the shaft halves from the crank pinusing the press 5479/A (fig. 52 - 53 op, 1 and 2).6) - Mount the oversized crank - pin and con-rodgroup to the shaft half flywheel side; after thisoperation mount shaft half, clutch side (see fig. 54 -55 - op. 3 and 4).7) - Carry out the linal Inspection and, wherenecessary, true up accordi ng to the instructionsgiven on page 56,The final inspection must be carried out withaccuracy being the crankshaft used as a valve withrespect to the crank,
