The Chinese were the first people that we know of to write about the basic idea of the pinhole camera or "camera obscura" (Latin words meaning "dark room"). About 2,500 years ago (5th Century B.C.) they wrote about how an image was formed upside down on a wall from a pinhole on the opposite wall.

About 2,400 years ago (4th Century B.C.) the famous philosopher Aristotle talked about a pinhole image formation in his work. He wondered why "when light shines through a rectangular peep-hole, it appears circular in the form of a cone?" He didn't find an answer to his question and the problem wasn't answered until about 2,000 years later in the 1500s.

In the 1500s many artists, including Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci, used the "camera obscura" to help them draw pictures. A person or object would be outside the dark room and their image was reflected on a piece of paper and the artist would trace it.

The first description of the camera obscura as an aid to the draftsman was made by Giovanni Battista dell Porta in his book Natural Magic. 15 years later, the possibility of producing a better quality image through a lens was discovered.

The CO was first a room big enough for the artist to enter. It became useless until it became portable in the latter 17th century.

The problem with a single view of the CO, is you are limited to the field of view in front of the glass. . . which is not always clear or sharp. By introducing 2 lenses to the equation, the angle of view could be made narrow or wide for portrait or landscape work.

As with modern film, the ancients had long observed that light changes the nature of many substances.

The chlorophyll of vegetation turns green on exposure to sunlight; colored fabrics fade. Certain salts of silver, esp. the halides, with exposure to light will change tone. Unpolished silver is dark in tone.

This was first observed with silver halide by Johann H. Schulze.

Halides : compound of a halogen with anotherelement or group on the PT.

Camera Lucida – designed by W H Wollaston in 1807. Drawing paper was laid flat. Over it, a glass prism was suspended at eye-level by a brass rod. Looking through the peephole centered over the edge of the prism, the artist saw at the same time both the subject and the drawing paper. His pencil was guided by the virtual image.

The device was VERY portable and did not require a mirror nor a dark room.

The camera obscura was used in the painting of this picture. It was painted about 1660 by Jan van der Meer van Delft (aka Jan Vermeer). His paintings are known for their "camera-like" detail and quality - but were painted 150 years before the invention of the camera
