ARCTIC and ALPINE

Savanna of mountain alder (Alnus viridis ssp. crispa) which occupies extensive upland areas around the alpine treeline in the Finger Mountain area (1600 m), 60 km north of the Yukon River on the Dalton Highway, Alaska. The spacing of the alder shrubs appears to be extremely regular, but no satisfactory explanation has been proposed for the pattern, although many of the shrubs are located on frost boils.
