Thank you, Brighton Rotarians, and those who have supported me in my efforts to provide Long-Term Housing with Support for those with enduring Mental Illness. You will be pleased to know, the third Housing Project is before Government, the long term Model is now recognised by Department of Health.

Over the 13 hard years it took to achieve this, I have appreciated your personal support and friendship, just some of those who helped me along the way were: Phil Mellet, PP Jack Joel, PDG John and Elaine King, Keith Cameron, PP Pat Kearns, Eric and Jill Barr, PP Geoff and Ann McGeary, PP Paul and Christine Nicholson.

PP David Grodski, who sat on The Haven Foundation board for a time, and last, but, not least PP David and Lilian Efron whose concern and support helped me achieve my dream in changing the preferred housing model for those in need. I am proud indeed.

REPORT

Presented by President Bill Howley Presented by secretary Daryl Forge

• Eric Barr - Mentioned about the Hackers Golf Weekend away on Friday 20 February. Play Friday at Moonah Links, tee off at 1pm and have a few drinks at night. Then play the next morning if able. Eric apologised to Members who were unaware of the event as it is pretty much booked out now with only a few spaces left. Let Eric know. Also Eric mentioned again the Marysville Golf weekend and details are on page 11 of this Bulletin.

• Tony Rouse - Spoke about the Great Australia Day Swim coming up 25 January

and hoped everyone would turn up for their duty on the day and that they would let him know if they couldn’t make it. He pointed out that a printed version of the roster was on our tables.

• Stuart McIntyre - Spoke about GADS. Hoped the weather will be good. Bookings have come in a little earlier than last year. Stuart also mentioned changes to the format. Stuart acknowledged the contribution that Paul Sadler Swimland have given to the Swim as principal sponsor. Stuart introduced Paul and he spoke about some exposure he got with the Eddie Maguire Triple M radio show for the Swim. On this he wanted to say that Swimland supports GADS and its a unique event for many reasons. Paul thinks we have a very sophisticated swim and he was overawed by our Club Members participation. He thinks it is very important to get swimmers out of the pool and down to the baths where they can learn to swim in the open water and that’s one of the big reasons why they support our swim.

• PP Ivan Vojlay - Ivan mentioned Dr John Sherman who was a guest at the last meeting. John is probably the foremost heroin addiction doctor in Australia. He said John had a book available on Drug Addiction and Ivan said he had copies for sale. Ivan also said we are approaching the time for the next District 9800 Conference in Hobart on 12-14 March 2015. Ivan wanted to hear from anyone who intended to go.

• Dan Pyne - Dan is going to swim the English Channel in mid August and he is 15 years old and he goes to Brighton Grammar. He said he loves swimming and loves a challenge and he is doing it for a cause - The ICD Fund that raises funds for the research of Brain Cancer in Youth. He is trying to raise $100,000 for the fund. He will swim from Dover to Calais and it’s 33 kms. He is swimming roughly 30 kms a week in preparation. He has no corporate sponsors as yet. 5

• Pres Bill mentioned that it had been a long time since we met and that during this time the Club had been promoted in the Leader newspaper by showing the Hoy family celebrating Christmas in front of their bathing box also seen in last week’s Bulletin and John Van Wisse, the Event Ambassador for the Great Australia Day Swim with another swimmer Bonbeach teenager Dean Wilson, the 5km title holder promoting the event (pictured at right). Dean was hoping to win again he said. Bill said it is usually very hard to get any newspaper promotion so this exposure was very welcome.

• Pres Bill recognised the work of Stuart McIntyre (Chairman) and Graeme Wallace in the organising of the Swim and noted that around 100 Rotarians and partners would be taking part in the running of the event. Bill also acknowledged the presence of Paul Sadler at the meeting whose Swimland are the principal sponsors of the Swim.

• Pres Bill said that last meeting we had PP Peter Johns talking about his acquisition, his yacht ‘Frances” and PP Herman Mott spoke about leaving our Club and returning to Adelaide with Elaine. We also read in the Bulletin about Michael Rundle’s farewell.

• Pres Bill mentioned the upcoming Sportsman’s Night on Wednesday 25 March 2015 which will have a cricket theme in line with the ODI World Cup and will include speakers Sir Ian Botham and Sir Richard Hadlee along with ex Australian fast bowler Rodney Hogg. Michael Roberts will be the MC and this year for a change we

will have renowned Australian bush poet Don McQueen spinning yarns. The event will run under the title of ‘A Night of Knights’. Bill congratulated Cameron Ward and PP Paul Nicholson on procuring such a great line-up of speakers.

Progress Report for the Half Year to 31 December 2014

Our focus on family violence prevention through innovation and development of men’s behaviour change programs continued and significant further progress was made.

The Online Behavior Change ProgramLifeWorks, Federation Training (formerly Gippsland TAFE) and Trusted Impact Pty Ltd continued work on the new online, group interactive program and results were monitored by the University of Melbourne’s Centre for Program Evaluation. The second 14-week field trial was completed in November and we were again most encouraged by the results. Preparations for the third and final trial in the first half of 2015 are under way.

The trials show that the relative anonymity of clients is encouraging openness and early engagement with their problems. The program takes up nearly 50% more time than a regular face-to-face program, which also improves effectiveness. It also avoids the need for clients to travel, saving time, costs and even babysitting fees.

Feedback from all stakeholders: clients, partners, facilitators and management, is most satisfactory. One partner said: “The program has given me the man I believed he could be when we married nine years ago.”

We are negotiating for the roll out of this program on an ongoing basis.

ResearchOur research study into the long term results of conventional men’s behaviour change programs will continue for another year as we follow up men who have “graduated” from the programs. Preliminary results, if confirmed, should lead to future improvements in behaviour change programs of all types.

Fund Raising and Community RelationsOur programs could not have continued without the generous support of several philanthropic trusts and we are most grateful to them.

We welcome the continuing official recognition of our program by Rotary, and generous donations were received from several clubs and many individual donors. Members of Violence Free Families addressed ten clubs and organisations in the half-year period, spreading awareness of family violence and our contribution to prevention.

Governance

We were delighted to welcome singer Coleen Hewett as our Ambassador. She has recently made a new album featuring an impassioned song about domestic violence and we look forward to a long and productive association.

We accepted with regret the resignation of Norm Thomas from our Board with effect from 31 December. Norm’s wise advice and many contributions over his five years of service will be very much missed.

The District Conference will be filled with a very interesting and diverse group of speakers. Hobart is a gorgeous place for a getaway- originally a penal colony, it was founded in 1804. It is the second oldest city in Australia after Sydney- so lots of historical sites to visit and explore.

March is a gorgeous time to be visiting; the average temperature is 20 degrees and the month of March has the least average rain recorded there across the year:) Hobart is a real foodie hot spot as well- home of the wonderful Mures Seafood restaurant. There are countless new places to explore- Garagistes, Taste Cafe, Pigeon

Hole The conference 2015 will be a great excuse to visit such a lovely city! The Conference website also contains links to other restaurants in the vicinity of the Venue.

Fantastic entertainment has been lined up to light up the Conference and there are several great fellowship opportunities planned. Rotary content is in the planning stages; an excellent opportunity for new Rotarians to learn more about Rotary

Irene and I look forward to seeing you in Hobart

Welcome to all visiting Rotarians & Guests

The Club meets Thursdays at 6pm for 6.30pm at Milanos Hotel, The Esplanade, Brighton Beach.

Rotary Grace “For good food, good fellowship

and the privilege of service, we give you thanks O Lord.”

Rotary Toast “To Australia, The Queen of Australia,

Rotary International & the Rotary Club of Brighton.”

It is the Hacker’s Summer Eclectic Season and to win an Eclectic you need birdies, and this week a record 4 Hackers each got a birdie. Captain Ian Cole was looking a certainty 100mm from the hole in the PreGame Putting until Ivan Vojlay (coming off his record game last week) calmly made the 20m putt but that was the end of Ivan’s hot streak for the day. Paul Nicholson (pictured below) took it over and playing his best game ever Paul emphatically won the day’s Handicap honors getting an excellent birdie along the way on the Long Drive hole where he putted in from off the green. David Lee put in his normal top game and with 5 pars won Off the Stick honors. Ron Stark would have loved the 2nd hole to have been Nearest The Pin as he hit a great drive and birdied the hole.

On the real Nearest The Pin hole Daryl Forge was the closest and got his par. Geoff Gochowski won the Long Drive with a massive hit and took full advantage of it finishing it with a birdie. But then Geoff obviously over confident on the next hole (Venus) sent his ball into the centre of the Lake which means of course he became the new member of Arthur Hubbard’s Water Club. Bruce Crossley’s ball also went into the Lake and luckily due to lack of water it found on a dry bit on the edge and Bruce’s 2nd shot got him out safely.

One of last week’s Venus winners Graeme Wallace (a senior member of Arthur’s Water Club) hit another fine drive on the Venus hole and with consummate ease putted in for his 4th Venus - his 1st one being back in 2004. It was a good day’s golf the course was dry and playing long and in a very even field the day’s trophies were shared between 6 of the 13 Hackers playing.

Captain Ian Cole

Marysville Golf WeekendARRIVE FRIDAY 24 APRIL DEP SUNDAY 26 APRIL - EARLY NOTICELots of members have said they would like another Marysville golf weekend to go ahead so on Thursday 8 January Jill and Eric Barr checked things out up there. Stonelea is mostly unavailable because it is one of the few places where locals can have weddings making any deal with us dearer too.

The venue will instead be the now new two storey Guest house opposite the gold course itself. The old Golf House etc there burned down with everything else hence it is now new. It has 21 rooms on two storeys and is seemingly very reasonable in price. Eric is assured we can bring up our own wine which lessens costs further. And the golf club has been rebuilt with a more permanent bar and lunch facility. So pre dinner drinks may be there instead etc as it just a walk over the road. The hotel does supply all the glassware. We may have the place to ourselves if Eric asks soon.

A new Vibe hotel is under completion in Marysville on the old Hotel and Cumberland site but it is not taking bookings and is an unreliable choice in 2015.

ERIC NEEDS YOU TO ADVISE YOUR LIKELY AVAILABILITY AS HE HAS PUT A FREEZE ON BOOKINGS. It will be quite a bit cheaper. A no brainer!

Paul scored 41 in his best score ever! Congrats Paul.
