Vowel Sticks• Cut vowel pictures and vowel letters from cardstock• Glue each picture and vowel on the top of a large

craft stick (glue the same vowel and picture back to back)

Vowel Snatch• Glue the button magnet at the end of a large craft

stick• Cut each circular vowel• Glue a vowel on a washer

You Will Need:• 5 large craft sticks (per set)• 5 large washers (per set)• button magnet (per set)• hot glue gun

To Assemble Your Activities:

Teaching Directions:Vowel SticksProvide each student with the target vowel sticks. For students just learning short vowels, begin with two vowel sticks. You will want to start with dissimilar sounding vowels. For example, you will want to avoid beginning with the /i/ and /e/ vowels since they sound similar. As the students become more proficient with the task, you will be able to add more vowel sticks to this activity and use the more similar sounding vowels. To begin this activity, tell the students that you will be saying a sound and their job is to hold up the correct stick. Once students become proficient with this task, provide CVC words and have the students hold the stick for the vowel sound in the word.

Vowel SnatchProvide each student with vowel discs and a magnetic wand. For students just learning vowels, place only two vowels on the table. Begin with vowels with dissimilar sounds (e.g. /a/ and /o/). Tell the students that you will be saying a vowel sound and they are to use their wand to “snatch” the vowel. Once students become proficient with this task, provide CVC words and have the students “snatch” the vowel sound they hear in the word.
