Anzac Day Activities The school will be conducting an Anzac Day assembly on Thursday 23 April at 2.00pm, run by the student leaders and Year 6. Also, we are very fortunate to have an ex-serviceman coming to the school to speak with our Year 6 students early next term. From The Office: Help, Sports Shorts needed urgently Please donate any spare sports shorts to the office, we need all sizes. Jodie Sly School Administration Manager SCIENCE NEWS: Any students in Years 3 -6 who absolutely LOVE science are invited to submit an Expression of Interest to participate in EXTRA science activities in preparation for this year’s PCS Science Fair (see details later on in the Newsletter – also available in the Permission Notes page of the school website). These submissions need to be completed (over the holidays) and handed in to Ms Zillhardt by Friday 24 April (email submissions to [email protected] would also be gladly accepted). And ….. URGENTLY SEEKING SCIENCE RESOURCES • For our PCS Science Fair project, we need an old bicycle or exercise bike (that can still be pedalled) – so, instead of throwing

out your old ones in the next council clean-up, please contact Ms Zillhardt to arrange to deliver them to the science room … • Our empty toilet-roll collection needs replenishing – please send any empties (also from paper towels, Gladwrap etc) to Ms

Zillhardt • Do you have any flexible pipe/hose with a wide enough diameter for marbles to run through? Or conversely, smaller than usual

marbles (ball-bearings?) which could run through standard hose? Can you help?? Any contributions gratefully accepted …. please contact Ms Zillhardt if you ned clarification. Heike Zillhardt Science Co-ordinator Library News: Volunteers The library is in need of volunteers to help with the covering of the many new books which have been purchased. It would involve collecting a pack of 6 - 10 books to take home and cover and return within a week. Mrs Westwood is available to demonstrate how to cover the books in the mornings before school with the exception of Tuesdays. Please let the office know if you are available to assist us. The books are now available. A big thank you to those parents who have already begun covering books. Premier’s Reading Challenge Update All students have been borrowing books from the Premier’s Reading Challenge since early March. Students in Years 3-6 are filling out their own reading logs as part of their library sessions. Parents of students in K-2 are asked to keep a record of the books their children have read by logging on to the Premier’s Reading Challenge website and typing the titles of the books. The user name and password are those used by students to log on to the computers at school. We are strongly encouraging all students to be involved. All those who successfully complete the challenge before the closing date in August will be awarded a free book of their choice. Happy reading! Fiona Bevan and Kathy Westwood Library

Easter Hat Parade:

Congratulations on another very successful Easter Hat Parade for 2015! The K-2 parade is always a highlight for parents, staff and students alike and this year was no exception. Miss Tekampe and the K-2 staff organised and ran the event very smoothly and our school captains Alice and James, were wonderful comperes.

Of course the event is all about the children and their wonderful bonnets – and what a display it was! The children were well behaved and put on a great show – well done!

We were also very pleased to welcome so many grandparents and grand-friends and we hope that they enjoyed their visit – we know that the children were very excited by their presence.

Have a Wonderful Easter!

PCS Science Fair - September 2015EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

To: Students in Yrs 3, 4, 5, 6

To celebrate Science Week which takes place in August, the PCS is again holding a Science Fair and this year we are celebrating the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies.

Wheeler Heights students will be concentrating on the theme “Photons to Photosynthesis”, based around the 100th anniversary Einstein’s Theory of General Relativity and the role that sunlight plays in sustaining ALL life on Earth.

The Science Fair will provide an opportunity for up and coming young Australian Scientists to showcase their ideas and passion for Science. The Fair is being held at Narrabeen Sports High School in Term 3. The day will include students demonstrating and viewing science experiments. Other students from PCS schools will also visit and view the Science Fair. The afternoon will conclude with a visit to the fair by parents where they will also view a presentation.

Eight Wheeler Heights students from Years 3 - 6 will be invited to attend the PCS Science Fair as presenters. Students who are interested in or who have a passion for science are invited to submit an expression of interest (EOI - below) detailing why they feel they would like to attend this event. Students submitting an EOI will need to have demonstrated an interest in science, must be effective communicators willing to talk to an audience about their experiments and be prepared to attend (at least) weekly experiment/preparation sessions during lunch times throughout Term 2 and leading up to the Fair.

Wheeler Heights Public School Parents & Citizens Association Supporting our Students & School

Election Day at WHPS Report 28 March 2015

Last Saturday was a great and busy day at WHPS. The support from our school community was absolutely fantastic. I would like to thank everyone who provided one of the beautiful baked goodies for the cake stall. Every single plate was sold!

Here follows a very big thank you to our parent volunteers on the Big Day:

We also had a number of very involved WHPS students. Especially, we want to thank:

All the above busy mums, dads and children also juggle Saturday sports, music and arts activities, and social events. But still, we had volunteers getting out of bed before dawn to help set up. We had people who volunteered for hours on end, and even after their allocated time slot was finished, they stayed on. We had people who looked after various kids at various locations throughout Warringah, and still found time to BBQ for 90 min in-between. We had people who came in early to offer more helping hands. We had people who had volunteered in the morning, but came back after lunch to help out with the sparsely populated shifts. And we had children collecting signatures for our Walkway Petition for long hours, or children at the cash box of the BBQ proving to be big maths wizards with all those money amounts, or children cooking at the BBQ and keeping up with the men. You are legends! THANK YOU!

Our BBQ teams cooked 27 kg of sausages, 10 kg sliced onions, 15 kg bacon and 19 dozen eggs on the slices of 53 loaves of bread. Hundreds of cake plates were sold before lunchtime. For the Walkway petition, we collected 755 signatures on the day, bringing the total to 1769 signatures.

Finally, at the Buskers, $440 was raised for the people of Vanuatu by

The musicians also made our time at the stalls more enjoyable, entertaining us with beautiful music!

There was a constant stream of people walking out of WHPS with cake plates and items from the White Elephant Stall. It looked a bit like Royal Easter Show :-) We all had a lot fun along the way.

Profits made amount to more than $3,100. Not bad at all for a single day!

Well done everyone! Again, THANK YOU TO YOU ALL!
